Uncharted 2 not possible on Xbox

PS3 News | The hype train pulls out of the station.
In comments likely to start flame-wars all round the internet, co-president of Naughty Dog Christophe Balestra recently told Ars Technica that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves would not be possible on the Xbox 360.

In promoting the sequel to one of the PlayStation 3’s best titles, Balestra said the Sony console has the advantage of its processing units, mandatory hard drive and the capacity of the Blu-ray disks. "I guarantee that this game couldn't be working on XBox 360,” he said. “It would be impossible. I'm 100 percent sure of this.”

"It's the combination of Blu-ray and hard drive. You can play the entire game without loading. We don't require an install. We're doing all the post-processing effects on the SPUs [the processing unit]. The quality of the depth of field we have, you can't do that on the Xbox."

Balestra says the sequel uses the full capacity if the machine’s processing power compared to around 30 percent for the first game.

While you’d expect this sort of hype with the release of a major title, we’re still rubbing our hands together in anticipation, which you'll get to see in our hands-on preview, due later this week. Uncharted 2 is due for the PlayStation 3 in October.

The PS3 has an ability no other console has. 100% of it's power can easily be beaten. It can draw energy from the Over-Hyped games released for it.

All said, I would agree with them here to an extent. The PS3 does have the jump on larger discs and sheer power. It could run on the Xbox, but most likely not as smoothly.

All I hope is that they can better the first game, which to this day is still amazing.

If they achieved 100% of the power of the PS3, where else is there to go? He should of said 90% and then Uncharted 3 could be 100%.
Why 110% of course!
I know. It will end up like Dragon Ball Z. Even though they are at 100% full power, they'll find some strange way to power up, all the while continuously talking ****.

The statement of 'using 100% of the power' is stupid anyway. Just how efficient is the game engine in using that 100%? I have no doubt later games will push more visual goodness out of the PS3.

But more on-topic.. are we still seriously having the 'lol my console has bettr grafix than urs' debate this late in the current generation?

.. since we all know it's irrelevant as PCs trump both icon_wink.gif

That's all nice and good. But how much would a PC set you back to get the graphics quality of Uncharted 2?

PC gaming is nice but uber expensive.

100% of power being used kinda makes me scared for my PS3... Anyone else completely paranoid now that the game is gonna be crash laden?

^Nope, having played the game extensively already, runs fine.

And I doubt it's 100% of PS3 power, it's probably just 100% of the power they know how to use icon_razz.gif

I more meant it as a throwaway sarcastic comment, but I'll bite:

CPU: AMD AM3 Phenom II x2 550 Black Edition $119
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA770-US3 $94
RAM: Transcend 4GB DDR2-800 (2x2GB) $59
HDD: Western Digital 500GB $62
GPU: 512MB ATI Radeon HD4870 $165
Case: Generic $27
PSU: Thermal Master 650W $65
Optical Drive: ASUS DRW-22B1ST SATA DVD-RW $47

Total: $638

Considering that'll do a lot more than just play games (it's a computer) and play any current PC game maxed out at resolutions a console can only dream of, that's pretty good value. Sorry for taking the topic off-course, but you know, I can't let false comments go uncorrected. icon_razz.gif

for about 6 months until you need to upgrade to be able to play the next swag of PC games at max resolution. and so on and so forth.

but back on topic.... yes unchartered looks great and yes this is a pissing contest. i'm sure they could get it running on a 360 albeit with slightly less draw distance.

I'm sure some other multi-platform holiday title will end up looking more graphically impressive and they'll be left eating their words.

Also, I'm quite sure we can all agree that the 360 and the PS3 are on par graphics-wise

...there are games on the Xbox like Gears 2 that i believe are AS impressive as those seen in Uncharted 2,

compare GT5 and Forza 3 and there's basically no difference (other than GT5 still using 2D trees LOL)

...and FFIIIX, basically no difference again.

Technical prowess isn't everything, while it does help it doesn't necessarily sell a game...take Crysis for example. Also consider that Art-style/direction holds more value than technical quality in most ppls minds.

If i were Naughty Dog i would be talking up unique gameplay features this close to their release, not belittling the Xbox 360 hardware...that's not gonna get them anywhere when a decent percentage of PS3 owners own Xbox 360's aswell.

Probably not, only if there were more Crysis like graphic games. And either way, it would still be doing better graphics then consoles.

I hardly use my PC for games these days, and the games I do play don't need a high end PC. Mind you, that may all change if a new MMO hooks me (the last was Conan) or when D3 comes out. Still, at current prices you can build yourself a pretty swanky computer that can do much more than just play games and has limited multimedia functions.

Truth be told the 360 holds PS3 game quality back just like the PS2 did last gen. Gamecube and xbox were better but it was the PS2 that was standard.

This gen. its DVD sized games and 360 operating specs that designate PS3 multiplatform quality and depth.

Hence the reason why PS3 exclusives can be bigger, better and more complex. Deal with it.

Candid, informative press releases not possible on PS3

In comments likely to start flame-wars all round the internet, co-president of Naughty Dog Christophe Balestra recently told Ars Technica that a press release with substance would not be possible on the subject of the PS3.

In a bout of shameless self-promotion, Balestra said the game he was responsible for has the advantage of PR that doesn't actually contain any information about the game itself. "We like to make lofty claims, hopefully putting Peter Molyneux to shame, however we go one step further and don't even mention what makes the game so great: We just guarantee its great!" he said. when asked if there were any future plans to gain some humility, he responded: "It would be impossible. I'm 100 percent sure of this.”...

Yeah, I'm not a fan of news that doesn't contain any information.

I don't want to start a flame war but that's BS. Yes DVDs may constrain the size of games but at least I don't have to install games in order to run them. The PS3's power is all theoretical, knowing how the PS3's CPU operates, I worked out that yes it's possible that Naughty Dog are using 100% of the CPU, however most of the cycles they're using as shunting memory to and from the SPEs. From the moment the CPU gets an instruction, it takes 8 operations assuming the most basic rending to get to the screen. On the Xbox 360 it's four...

and you know this how exactly?

Probably because the PS3 works by having 8 sub-processors that can only communicate with the 1 main processor. To be honest i'm not quite sure how it works, but its something like that anyway.
