Prototype Review

PS3 Review | The most awesome amount of carnage money can buy.
Sandbox titles seem to be coming out of the game industry's backside at a rapid rate nowadays. Crackdown, Saints Row, Grand Theft Auto IV and the most recent one, inFamous are all titles that come to mind, and that’s not even half of them. All offer some difference between each other, but ultimately offer the same core experience of doing whatever you wish in its world. And though the title Crackdown offered a decent amount of chaos, it seems that a new kid has moved in and taken that spot, and its name is Prototype.

Most well known for their valiant efforts last generation with Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Radical Entertainment are back with another sandbox game with a whole new character to use. The game begins when the protagonist Alex Mercer wakes up in a morgue, about to be dissected. As he’s on the run from his pursuers, he discovers that he has some incredible powers: super human strength, super speed, and the ability to shape shift. He has no clue why or how he got them, but he makes it his top priority to find out what’s been done to him, and what is happening to the city around him. Prototype does a solid job in offering a pretty good story, which is all about the truth behind Alex Mercer’s life, and a virus that’s spreading across the city, infecting people and turning them into mindless monsters. There are a few holes here and there, where some characters just seem to disappear off the map almost entirely, but it’s a story that will keep its claws dug into you until the very end.

But honestly, it’s not the story that’s going to keep you going in Prototype, it’s the powers and gameplay. To say Alex Mercer is overpowered is frankly an understatement, as his level of power is so ridiculously high that you really have to witness it first hand to believe it. As a shapeshifter, Alex can consume and become anyone he wants in the city, which is useful to gain more story tidbits through the Web of Intrigue, sneak through military bases unnoticed and also learn new abilities if he consumes certain people. Though the disguising of oneself does work in the game and is useful in some areas, you’ll mainly be focusing on the combat aspect of the game, which is where Alex can literally run head on into a battalion of tanks and come out unscathed if played right. Your movement is quick and nimble, allowing you to run up walls, leap several hundred feet up into the air, dash across the street at breakneck speed, and even glide. All of it is upgradeable too so by the time you’ve maxed out your abilities, you’re virtually unstoppable. Fighting is varied and can be done in many different ways too. You can throw cars at people, headbutt an apache into oblivion, body slam tanks, use your hand as a whip to slice people in half, hijack tanks, run up a wall while throwing a car at a tank... There’s an enormous amount of variety in play style and all are equally as fun as the next, and the game is open to experiment. It’s what makes Prototype such an utter blast to play, though before the fun begins you’ll probably be focusing on getting used to the controls, which are a little sloppy to be frank. Targeting and switching between targets while dashing across the city and up walls can be quite tricky to get a handle on at first, as the camera also swerves around a bit giving you a little disorientation. Once you’ve got the gist of things however, everything just seems to blend together into a seamless and chaotic experience.

In fact, we’re going out on a limb (hah) here and claiming that Prototype is the most chaotic game on the market right now. Hundreds of people, whether it be military, civilian or infected, litter the screen at all times and run amok, being blown to pieces by incoming military fire and explosions of cars crashing into things. You’ve also got smoke from fires simmering throughout the city, Apache’s covering the air, limbs being thrown about... yeah it’s crazy, and incredibly gory. In fact it’s probably one of the goriest games available, with people literally exploding into a gooey mess. Alex Mercer is also a total jerk, and encourages players into playing like a reckless jerk, killing everything in sight, so parents beware, there is a very good reason this game is an MA+15 and something kids should be steered clear of.

Ah yes, the tentacle attack, a common weapon used in the modern age.

Once you’re done with the story missions, you have quite a few side missions to complete as well, all of which earn you Evolution Points so you can upgrade your abilities even further. Though quite a few of the missions (including story) feel a little cookie-cutter and shallow, the game’s entire point is mainly to emphasise the chaos and frenetic pace, which those missions manage to express extremely well. So with the great power you wield, you also have some great replay value to go with it, which is always a good thing.

But what Prototype excels in, it lacks in other areas. In this case, the visuals. Though the animation of Alex Mercer and the amount of things going on at once is relatively impressive, the texture work and overall look of the game is a little dull. Textures are fairly bland and low res, and character models seem a little low in the polygon count, and have a strange amount of shine on their bodies too as if they’ve just been in an oil spill. But it seems that the visuals were a necessary sacrifice, as the frame rate remains absolutely rock solid regardless of how much is going on, so in some ways, it’s redeemable. We admit though, it has some pretty good use of lighting and shadows, so that also makes up for the muddiness of textures

Aurally, Prototype actually sounds quite good, with Dolby Digital Surround used to full effect, making the billions of explosions and cries of terror going off at once sound a whole lot nicer, further immersing you into the game’s world. The voice acting is quite well done as well, with Alex Mercer sounding exactly as you’d imagine him: sinister, angry and a complete jerk. But we like it. And finally, the music is great. Heart pounding and fast paced, it goes well with the combat and makes it feel a lot more epic than normal. For sound junkies, Prototype does a good enough job and will satisfy most.

Explosions and limbs. Lots of it.

Prototype is basically a game that you can pick up and play, have an absolute blast with, then walk away barely understanding what just happened. The chaos that ensues within the city is immense and often times damn near overwhelming, making you feel the aftershock after you’ve done it all, with a sudden familiar sound you know called silence. It’s a title that, while holding a decent story, is ultimately an arcade styled game, where you don’t really have to think much, just destroy, consume and move on. Among all the story driven titles with complex plots, deep character development and thought provoking gameplay, Prototype tends to just push itself away from all that, say “screw it”, and proceeds to eat human beings and kill everything else. It’s exactly what a Hollywood blockbuster film is; a little dumb, but incredibly entertaining. Recommended.
The Score
Prototype is some of the best mindless fun around, and has a surprisingly good story to boot. The ultimate sandbox of chaos. 8

Overall completion time is about 20 hours, that's 100% everything.

Main story is about 10 hours.

oooo, 20 hours just makes the cut. cheers Denny. Its not worth +$100 though so unless i can get it for less than $90 im there! (i saw jb have it for 89, red faction too) any help on whether i should get proto or red faction first?

Defensive? I was merely answering a question.

Just so happens when I saw Matt's post, I remember reading an interview with the Prototype devs where they were discussing exactly what he was asking because they were concerned about how a port from the PC would play on the PS3. So I pretty much paraphrased what they were saying.

I'm the first one to admit that multiplatforms in the past looked like ass on PS3 compared to the 360, so I was just excited about the fact that now we're seeing a bunch of them that don't!

But if you want me to be defensive, here goes:
Does my answer appease your obviously delicate sensibilities, or should I instead opt to contribute as much to the thread as you have by being, what...not defensive?

Seriously, some of you need to get off the turps.
I'm not worried about your contribution, you can post whatever the hell you want. And if anyone has 'delicate sensibilities' here, its the sort of verbose windbag that uses phrases such as 'delicate sensibilities'. icon_razz.gif

But seriously, the way I read your post, it sounded an awful lot like a defensive stance. Someone asked which platform the game was developed on, and you spent a paragraph talking about how well multiplatform is being handled on the PS and then gave a 1 sentence answer at the end that actually answered the question. Hell, you yourself admitted you sounded preachy.

So, yeah, calm down. It was just an observation.

It wasn't an observation, it was a snide comment that wasn't welcome.

If you read my post, and read what context the question was asked, you'd see that I was addressing Matt's underlying concern as to which console to pick this up for. I was actually contributing to this thread, I'd like to think (and it seems at least Matt agrees with me).

So, if you're looking to pin someone for being "verbose", consider the following:

If you have nothing constructive to add to a discussion, then why bother?

Oh wait, I know.
I believe you used the term windbag?

Basically forgot about this game for a while, but good to see it's out and a pretty good game.

Would actually get the PC version now, if I didn't have a large backlog to catch up on...

Yeah, it was a little snide, but it was also truthful. If you have a problem with me pointing it out, don't do it. I mean, it was a rather harmless comment that I think you took a little hard.

a) You answered the question sufficiently in the last sentence of your first post. Nothing more really needed to be added, it was developed on all 3 platforms, then it goes to say they quality one each will be near identical.

b) Underlying concern? Based on his post, all I could gather was he was asking what the lead platform for dev was, not a sermon on how the PS3 is getting more support. I can't read any further into that without knowing more about Matt, so I didn't.

Oh, the 'on-topic' burn. Yeah, maybe I should have created an entire thread devoted to this topic to assure relevance.... or, maybe I'll just drop 1 comment. Don't be petty, this has nothing to do with contributing or posting on topic, so don't turn it into that.

But as you said, this really should stay on topic, shouldn't it?

Um, Great review, Although I've read a lot about the sloppy controls in quite a few reviews, I really found the targeting system to be the most annoying piece of interface. There'd be 3 little sensor drones flying around you, and auto-target will still go for the helicopter behind a building. Cycling through targets should make this a lot easier, but using the camera control stick to cycle through targets means you're stuck in funny views when locked onto something or you accidentally switch targets while trying to look around.

Pot calling the kettle black a bit there, don't you think Synth?
Maybe if you had addressed your own pettiness before posting in the first instance, this thread wouldn't have gone to crap.

And I didn't take your comment so hard, as your intentions. I don't make a point of taking swipes at other users merely to stir the pot and I think it's childish when people DO. On the contrary, I DID add something new to this thread and despite your obvious affront at me doing so (hence my broadside at your delicate nature) it is still volumes more than what you've done here.

To end this silly exchange, I'm just going to say that I honestly believed Matt was asking about the lead console, because of all the past instances where the PS3 version has been ported poorly from the other versions. I think that's a reasonable assumption that I'm sure many would agree with.

I'm content with the entirety of my post and Matt has seen it fit to + my post, so I can only assume he was content with it too.

I've also used up all my niceness...

...So bugger off and stop being a tosser.

Windburn, shutup.

You're being so contrary and hyppocritical. You say the comment didn't effect you and you shouldn't bring the thread down with personal attacks, and then you go and kick up a big fuss with some veiled and overt insults. You say you're going to end the exchange of words and then you go on to insult me.

And I didn't take your comment so hard, as your intentions.
If my intentions were to severely piss you off, I would have posted something a lot worse than just hinting you were being a bit fanboyish. I just made a comment based on an observation and you took it as huge personal slight.

You act like I personally targeted you for my own sick enjoyment or to draw attention to myself like some sort of prancing Jezebel. I called it how I saw it, nothing more. I mean, like I even stir the pot anyway. If it came out of the mouth of some of the more contraversial posters and it was in a more popular topic, maybe your claim would have some validity. Right now, its just insulting conjecture used to discredit my claims.

Sigh. For the last time, this has nothing to do with contributing or being on topic (you were both in your original post) and attempting to hammer home this idea that I have delicate sensibilities/nature, its not working buddy: its a pretty shallow and baseless accusation (I actually found it quite funny).

I was under the impression that ports, no matter what console it was going to and which it came from, usually work out pretty poorly. As far as I know, Prototype could have been ported from either console. The information needed was answered with your last sentence, the rest was just 'PS3 chat with Windburn'.

You know what though? I was actually going to apologise, as I really didn't mean the original comment to be taken the way it was, which despite how much you claim otherwise, was badly. You took it badly, and you got pissy about it. And for that, I'm sorry. I really am. But what I said was still true and you are **** terrible at receiving criticism.

Sister got me this game for my birthday. I'm having massive amounts of fun with it. I mainly like going around in a tank and just running crap over, also I like the story idea, where you have to consume people to gather new pieces to your past, much better than the usual "progress on through missions and find out everything.

Far Cry 2 seems to have the same kind of thing going along and it's a really welcome addition to the sandbox genre.

My main issue is the lack of difficulty and the fact that the main story doesn't really urge me to continue with it, I honestly don't really care that much about it. Also there's a few niggling control issues which can be frustrating, but nothing game beaking.

I haven't purchased Prototype, so just be aware about my bias. But my brother has recently started playing Red Faction, and from what I've seen and heard, he's thoroughly enjoying it and comes highly recommended.

After giving this game a solid run through on the weekend this game is far better then what I was hoping for (Next gen hulk) the freedom to do whatever you want is crazy, I thought the whole "taking on missions by stealth or force" thing was just **** that the developers we're saying, but being able to sneak into a base, sabotage the detectors, and stealth consume the comander to gain acess were you can eat everyone inside without anyone ever even noticing is awesome.

The sheer variety of gameplay really showed iteslf when I was fighting a particular boss in the middle of time square, first I ran up to it and attacked it with my blade arm, got smashed so ran away and ate some people to recover health, then started doing hit and run throwing cars at it wich chipped away at it's health, then I started running up buildings elbow dropping onto it, then the military showed up so I hopped in a tank and started unloading onto it, the tank didn't last verry long so I grabbed a hellicopter out of the sky and flew around dodging the debries it threw at me peppering it with missiles, then hid from her louring hunters to the top of a building so I could eat them to use my devestator attacks on her.

All in all the fight lasted a good 20 minutes or more but stayed exciting the entire time, unlike a lot of fights I've seen in games recently (Mass Effect I'm looking at you) that are long and just painfully boring.

Currently playing Infamous and enjoying the over the top action (haven't really noticed thus far that all the NPC's are similar as I've been frying them.. icon_smile.gif), so looking forward to this game to be more over the top fun. I agree with a couple of the earlier posts, games that are great fun while not being as pretty (Saints Row 2) still win hands down in my book.
ps, Windburn post on explaining the lead consol question was a good post.

I don't understand people who say Saints Row 2 doesn't look good, coz it does. Frankly preferred to the slow framerate, shimmering buildings from GTA IV.

I'm loving this game at the moment ... it's so much fun. I'm constantly having to remind myself that there are actual missions to play rather than just going on rampages!

BUT ... does anyone else get headaches from this game? I don't know if it's the way the story is told with all the bright flashes or if it's becuase of the fast paced movement, but if I play it too long I end up getting a headache. icon_confused.gif
