The game has been developed alongside Final Fantasy XI for four or five years, was confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV is set for a simultaneous release on PC and PS3, launching worldwide in 2010 in English, French, German and Japanese. It is intended to be cross-region and cross-platform, with servers for both, although whether this aspect makes it into the final version will depend on the beta.
The focus of the game will be on character growth, with the developers considering 'new game systems that allow characters to grow and change in a dynamic way' as important as quality graphics and storytelling. In addition, the trailer that was recently released had a mix of in-game and pre-rendered footage, with the battle scene confirmed as being the former. The game will also not be using the Play Online system.
Finally, for Final Fantasy XI players, the world of Final Fantasy XIV will indeed be different, but similar. In particular, there will be similar races for veterans looking to transition to the newer game by creating similar characters. However, they will not be able to bring their old characters over to the new game.
