Uncharted 2 Preview

PS3 Preview | Hands on, teabags up with Uncharted 2.
This generation of games seems to have focused on the online aspect, for consoles anyway. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare delivered a deep and varied perks system into the scene, which resulted in a massive explosion of popularity, and games like Left 4 Dead and Gears of War delivered some fantastic co-op aspects into the online fray. Naughty Dog seems to have caught wind of all this too, with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves also bringing in some multiplayer madness AND three player co-op. But how does it all fare in the land of treasure hunting and women wooing? We’ve been toying with the beta for the past week or so and have come out pretty keen to play some more.

The beta comes with two options: Competitive Multiplayer and 3-way Co-op. With competitive multiplayer, you’re pitted in team games where it’s either Team Deathmatch or Plunder, which is a form of Capture the Flag though this time you’re capturing a gold idol, and also need to throw it over ledges and such as you can’t climb up top to areas with it in your hand. They’re both standard fare and what you’d expect in a multiplayer game, and support up to 10 players. Naughty Dog has also implemented a small perk mechanic into all this as well, with primary and secondary perks. The secondary perk lets you do various things with ammo, where you have a choice of increasing how much ammo you hold at spawn, how much you pick up from weapons on the ground, or how much a single clip from a gun can hold. The primary perk lets you steady the blind fire aim of either your pistol or machine guns, or steady them while aiming. They’re minor perks, but they’re well suited depending on your style of play.

Plundarrr! And booty too.

Once you’ve set up your character and found a suitable match (which can sometimes be difficult to find, though there’s not a huge amount of people playing in the beta so it’s excusable), you’re thrown into a match and the moment it starts, you’re already charging in ready to kill or plunder. Gameplay feels very much like the original Uncharted with swift and smooth movement and animation, and quick gunplay and a cover system to boot. Melee is also incorporated in the multiplayer however it’s more a single hit rather than a full blown combo like in single player portions, though if you do catch someone from behind, it’s a quick snap to the neck and instant kill. The matches do involve some forms of teamwork, as laying down suppressive fire for a team mate or breaking flanks with grenades can really aid in winning a fight over, though it just boils down to who has the happier trigger finger and better aim. While the multiplayer functions quite well at this stage with minimal lag and few bugs, the Team Deathmatch portion does feel a little tacked on. It works, but it’s nothing that would absolutely blow your mind. Plunder is a little more entertaining though, with the loot being quite hard to capture considering you need to throw it around, so team work here is of much higher importance.

But what the beta really shines in, is the 3-player co-op mode. The level is about 5 to 10 minutes long and is not only challenging but incredibly fun. The AI is aggressive in their attack and come from all sides, so tactical play and teamwork is an absolute must, which makes it so much more enjoyable. There are also moments where all three players are required in order to progress further through the level, so there is a definite sense of purpose for each player, and with the challenging gameplay, a carry through from one player is a rare occurrence. There is also very little lag in the co-op mode too, so it not only plays well but is very functional, even with players from other countries.

More booty to be plunderin'! See where we're going here?

But perhaps the most impressive thing of all in the beta is how good it looks. Uncharted 2 looks utterly amazing, but you all probably know this by now. Textures are of a very high resolution as are the shadow maps, and character models not only animate beautifully but look ridiculously good. But it’s the colours that really make it a stand out game. Uncharted 2 feels full of life, with different shades of reds, greens and blues all over the place, further enhancing the game's already fantastic looks. And all this is achieved with a rock solid frame rate. Not only that, but haters of the screen tear from the original will be happy to know the game is now incorporating VSYNC, which removes the tearing entirely. Though earlier this year we touted that Killzone 2 was the king of visuals on consoles, Uncharted 2 seems to be well on the way to toppling it, and with flying colours.

Audio wise the game is certainly no slouch either at this stage, with gunfire sounding appropriate and clean as it should, and with full DTS surround sound also being used to full effect. Music is a little scarce at this stage but considering it’s a beta, we’re not too fussed about it for the moment. It’s all sounding good so far, and we’re confident that Naughty Dog will make it sound even better come the game's release later this year.

Arr we not be likin' that booty..

The multiplayer of Uncharted 2 is good, but not something to be drooling over. Its competitive multiplayer offers a solid but ultimately standard take on Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag which works and is fun to play, but doesn’t really hold a candle to many of the other multiplayer focused games on offer on the PlayStation 3. Co-op on the other hand is definitely something worth waiting for, as we had a blast playing through it and are salivating for more. Uncharted 2 seems to be shaping up extremely well, and at this stage if the game is looking, sounding and playing this good, then we can’t wait to see what the full thing is going to be like come the end of this year.
Overall:
Though the competitive side isn't much to look forward to, Uncharted 2 feels almost made for co-op, and we can't wait to try more.

The settings in this game, are they all throughout South America. Ravaged buildings e.t.c. I wouldn't miind some more jungle.

There is apparently alot of jungle, so don't worry about that.
Also, there is snow, lots of crunchy, icy snow! Sigh, I love snow, it's so pretty.

NEW THOUGHT! If there is a SKIING scene, I will positively DIE with tears of JOY. Oh man, that would be beyond awesome. An amalgamation of my two most favourite things EVER, skiing and gaming!

Anyway, I'm guessing we may see ourselves jet-setting all over the world in search of who-knows what following who-knows-who's 16th century adventures across the globe, so expect the environs to be really different and fresh.

Great preview Denny, our coop adventure was pretty damn fun! We actually very almost failed it, it was definitely no push over, which is great news!

I especially love how the enemy flanks you, and appears from amongst the buildings around you, climbing down to join the fray, or blowing open a wall where you least expect it. There is also opportunity to engage in cooperative climbing (boosting each other up to otherwise unreachable heights) and navigating the buildings, so it's not all just mindless shooting, which is a real breathe of fresh air.

In fact, I think they can do even more to incorporate climbing into the competitive maps. There were many ledges and things in these maps that I thought I should be able to climb, but couldn't, and was a little disappointed. I hope they work on these prior to release!

Someone give this man a medal. The Jetski in the original Uncharted was fun, but slightly broken. If they could perfect skiing in Uncharted 2......oh man, I REALLY need this game.

Denny, your thoughts sound pretty similar to my own on the beta. I found the co-op mission to be particularly challenging and have only completed it once in a half dozen attempts. You really need to work together and cover each other when under attack from two or three fronts.

In the end though I think it will still be
single > co-op > plunder > deathmatch

Yeah I definitely think it's the SP portion that will be the best part about Uncharted 2, then the co-op. Considering ND is primarily an SP-focused developer then I'm expecting no less than absolute awesomeness with this game :P

And oh God does this game look good. It's a nerdgasm for me considering I look at every single nook and cranny and love my technical analysis. I DID spot a texture mapping error once though..it was on a rooftop when climbing and you can only see it if you move the camera above..

Are the single player missions the same as the co-op ones? Because we saw the co-op mission in single player before, but it was also different to how it is in the beta.

^Honestly I can't confirm it for you at this time, though from what I've gathered it seems that they are, but the co-op missions are altered slightly to be able to handle the 3 players in an effective manner.

We'll see when the game comes closer to release.

I'm really enjoying the beta. A few little quibbles, but over all it's very good. The deathmatch and plunder mode gameplay is pretty basic, but it's good simple, arcadey fun.

I think the climbing/jumping is actually pretty well implemented in the adversarial modes, without becoming a distraction. Taking "high ground" often does provide a significant advantage.

A couple of more "vertical" levels could be good though.

On co-op:

I think that's a bit of a stretch, given that a.) the co-op mode can be played 2 player, and b.) in all the three-player actions, Sully just stands off to the side not doing anything.

The three player actions in the beta seem to be a basic way to keep all the players together and possibly limit the demand on the system/net code by confining the gameplay to one smallish area at a time. It's not a bad thing, but it doesn't really add to the gameplay in my eyes.

The other problem is that unless the co-op campaign is quite long, it could get stale pretty quick, given that the bad guys spawn in the same spots every single time, allowing you to create choke points once you've run through the level a few times. Unless Naughty Dog mix things up a little before the full release.

Still, I was looking forward to Uncharted 2 just for the single player game. That it has multiplayer AND co-op AND they're both a lot of fun is just a huge bonus.

I've noticed a couple of camera glitches too. Like if you back yourself into a corner and aim, you end up looking at your shoulder instead of what you want to shoot at. Still, it's very polished for a beta.

I'm not gonna get it now.

I honestly don't see Nate skiing. Sliding out of control down the side of a mountain on some piece of shrapnel from a building he's just blown up, half yelling in terror, half shooting down a helicopter, that I can see.

I got a code for the beta and, after downloading it the moment it was released I haven't even started it up. I did the same thing with MGS4. I just can't get excited for anything multiplayer. I'm glad Naughty Dog apparently aced it, though. Higher review scores means more people buy the game and are converted.
