I'm still not really sure why this title is so hyped it certainly looks interesting though. The models are a bit rough although but the animation makes up for it though, very smooth.

From those screenshots I saw the other day (i.e. the **** ones), I think there might be real danger of this getting banned and not released in Australia.
this is why.

Yeah, I know, but it still looks a bit hit and miss to me.

We'll see after E3. Hopefully with hands on.

What does it matter if the graphics look good or not? If the gameplay doesn't work graphics don't mean crap, that said if they pull off the gameplay then the graphics don't matter so much.

Although I'd still prefer graphics that match this generation of consoles, I'm looking at you Atlus and NIS.

I fail to see why everyone is so down on the look of Heavy Rain? How is it not 'current gen', exactley? Looks pretty slick to me, considering they're going for a film/TV (hence, normal settings/characters) sort of visual style.

No, it's not big and in your face like Gears of War or similar - but that's because it isn't a visuals focused shooter about giant aliens and space marines... it's about people interacting with other people, in everyday settings.

Much harder to smooth over rough edges and shift focus when you can't throw in outlandish effects and over the top models.

Karai got it spot on - people are looking into this game expecting too much flash.

In the real world, marines don't have suits powered by nuclear plants, and cars don't look incredibly disproportionate. The real world has colour but nowhere near as vibrant or overcooked as many fictional games.

Though the game looks drab on the colour scheme, it seems to be deliberate considering the setting and context. Most of the footage I've seen of this game showcases darker settings with 'realistic' approaches, so clearly the DESIGN aspect of the game wouldn't make the game look all that incredible. It's all based on its aesthetic approach rather than its technical.

But then look at the animation and facial details. There are few games that match that level of detail, so the game is indeed quite impressive once you overlook the more realistic approach in art.

I at first was a little disappointed with the graphics in these trailers. However if anyone has seen the "Demo" they showed last year everything appears much more polished and clean so I have confidence the finished product will look fantastic.

it was a response to leon weighing out the positives and the negatives - i could of made it in depth but chose to keep it simple but some of you cant seem to grasp that , in regards to the gamplay well last i checked the makers regraded the game as " art " so we will see but it really dosnt matter to me as long as it delivers.

While I 100% agree that they are not the be-all-and-end-all of the game, I do think people have the right to be peeved about the graphics. Sure they are going for a realistic feel, but I think that makes their failure more obvious. It looks pretty ugly to me and I think a lot of this is due to, as Vervulus Maximus said, poor use of lighting. The way some of those shots are lit makes them look rather good, but most of them come off as ugly as the lighting is highlighting the seemingly low poly count, jaggy edges and bad design choices (ie. poxy sunglasses guy). I don't think it looks "last-gen" as some have claimed, but it is nowhere near as good as it was hyped.

I mean come on, we were promised us this:

As I said before, Heavy Rain is currently still in an alpha stage of development. Which means that the game is playable from start to finish, but roughly and not polished. Now the core game is finished, Quantic Dream can work on implementing the technology you posted into the full game. The game is coming out next year, so they have a full year just to polish the look of it.

We'll still get that.. those graphics are indeed part of the current engine and have been played in real interactive demos.

It might just be a matter of the exact stills taken - the video versions of these preview pictures makes them look a whole lot better. In motion, everything pretty much just works.

These screenshots however are really mixed.. and being static images they give us time to find all sorts of problems. I have a real problem with the top right image in that the guy has this nice bright local light making his skin shine and generally looking great, but the barrels behind look dull, flat and catch none of that light that makes the guy so shiny.. and the texturing on the barrels is so low grade compared to the person leaning on them. That's what irks me in these shots - some amazing elements mixed with stuff that looks really quite dull or like a really standard video game. When it's all moving like in the video previews of this scene, I didn't notice at all, but in the stills you really have the time to see the huge differences in quality from one element to the next.

That said, the end product is a moving interactive game. We wont be playing it as a set of still images that we stare at for a minute and pick out low polygon parts and lower quality textures in the background.. we'll be too busy watching that guy's face when he speaks, or monitoring his hands to make sure he doesn't pull a gun mid-interrogation.

The only thing that is really bugging me about all the new footage that has been released is how little these digital 'actors' appear to emote.

There are moments when something interesting is going on with their features but for the most part, they look completely dead and detached from the scene. It's the eyes. They haven't gotten them up to the standard that was hinted at in that vid mattstep posted.

I'm not trying to put the game down. I was a huge fan of what Quantic Dream accomplished with Fahrenheit and did as much as I could to champion the game around here way back when. I have no doubt that this team will once again put their obvious talents to good use with Heavy Rain. It's only that everything I've seen recently has been underwhelming given the expectations from the earlier footage.

I hope (and expect) things will get cleaner from here.
