Slim PS3? New PSP? Motion camera for 360?

PS3 Rumour | Ah, rumours. It must be E3.
The E3 gaming expo is a time of the year when the rumour mill goes into overdrive. Some gaming companies selectively 'leak' information to the gaming media, while a lot of speculation with various degrees of credibility gets tossed around.

The latest Sony E3 rumour involves the announcement of a possible ‘slim’ version of the PlayStation 3 at the gaming expo. Sony has denied the rumour so far, with a Sony UK representative telling Computer and Video Games that they "currently don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3."

This rumour is likely to be proven false if past experience tell us anything; it took Sony four years to produce a slimmer version of the PlayStation 2 after its release, and ‘shrinking’ the PlayStation 3 would be a much more difficult prospect. We’ll have to wait and see.

However, the other Sony hardware-related rumour is gaining momentum. This rumour involves a new version of the PSP, allegedly called the PSP Go. According to 1Up, the new PSP will likely include a redesign “available in two SKUs, with either eight or 16 GB of built-in flash memory". The other rumour doing the rounds is that the new PSP will only play downloadable-games.

The third and final rumour is rather an old one, and relates to the possibility that Sony will release a Wii-like motion-sensing controller. The same rumour is being used for the Xbox 360 as well.

In addition, it has been speculated that a motion-sensing camera for the Xbox 360 will be unveiled at E3. The Wall Street Journal. says that the device will allow players to control activity on-screen via their bodies. This rumour is believed to be quite credible, but whether the camera is announced at E3 - or how far along development of it is - is another matter.

We'll keep you posted.

I think most people aren't buying a PS3 because there has yet to be a decent price drop. Maybe Sony should think about this before creating a "slim PS3". This will no doubt give them carte blanche to keep the price high, or even raise it to a new stupid level.

I'm no fanboy, I own multiple consoles and a gaming PC, yet Sony's attitude of "keep the price high and tell people it's worth it" really doesn't wash with myself or any of my friends. When they finally do decide to drop the price, most of us won't even bother because we'll already be well entrenched in the consoles we have. I don't think Sony understands consumer backlash.

icon_neutral.gif interesting move. Well for pirates anyway. Wouldn't the games still be around 1-1.8gb? That might be a lot for some customers out there. Especially those who are on more restrictive plans offered by Telstra.

Waaaaaaaaaaay to early for PS3 hardware revision. That normally comes much later.

PSP revamp is interesting. I'm interested to see what they do with it. Potential to totally pump on the PSP from a good to great handheld (battery life, better confort while playing, better d-pad, good media offering playback) etc. If it turns out just the same PSP but with internal memory it will be a total dissapointment for me.

The motion camera idea is horrible from M$. I hope to high hell that they have a lot more on offer at E3. Their xmas is looking very crap and they need some killer apps, not a dodge motion add on.

I don't think enough people understand value.

-The PS3 isn't only a blu-ray player, but it's one of the very best blu-ray players.
-It comes with a hard drive by default and allows an easy process to upgrade it.
-The hard drive can be used for media center like features for movies, photos, mp3's etc
-It has built in Wi-Fi (Something MS charge $170 for an external dongle)
-It has a built in web browser
-It has bluetooth
-It's controllers don't require batteries or battery packs
-USB ports (printers, cameras, keyboards etc)
-Free network/online ($90 a year for Xbox)
-Support for dual boot PS3/Linux
-Free PC based program for creating custom themes
-free online social network, Home
-it is a quality piece of hardware that doesn't run hot, noisy or scratch discs and break every 2 months...

If the ps3 was $499 you would see alot more start to move globally even $449. (of course adjusted for exhange rates in other countries)

You are echoing Sony PR bullish stance to why they won't drop the price.

But primarly people buy consoles to play games. $700 is still too expensive for the masses.

The only thing stopping me from getting a PS3 is price and having just bought a 360, there isn't any compelling reason to fork out $700 for the three games I kinds sorta want.

i still agree that the ps3 is cheap out of the box than an xbox 360 that has complete functionality. the wireless adapter, hard drive etc and other accessories i bought after getting my arcade upped the price to one that rivalled the ps3.

I agree that the PS3 doesn't really need revising... yet. They should just focus on getting out the PSP2 and trying to develop a machine that's a bit more "on the go" friendly.

As for the other discussion: I'm wth the PS3 guys on this one, you want full functionality out of a 360 and you have to pay for it. I'm lucky in that I got an arcade fairly cheap, But I've still spent just shy of 500 on the system itself (120GB HDD) and I use wired internet and I'm constantly changing batteries, if I shift the 360 to the lounge (which I will when our mega awesome home theatre is set up) There's another 150. ANd batteries are bugging the crap out of me, so I'll be buying a play and charge kit with an extra battery soon, bam there's another $50.

Hey, I've just reached 700 dollars for a 360 that still can't play Blu Rays.

The advantage with the 360 though is that the cost is spread, see I've only spent 500 NOW, and the rest will come when I need to spend the money, not right off the bat. So there's advantages on both sides.

But I guess the question is, it is better to have choice or be forced into 'value'.

Entry level counts for a lot.

Ultimately it depends on the customer, so a bit of a pointless discussion as its based on what YOU need not what someone else does.

As for the 360 Motion Camera, anyone who has seen this technology in action will know it's absolutely awesome, straight out of Minority Report.

I'm not sure that MS will do it justice, but if they do, it's a definite winner imo.

Maybe when it first came out. Not anymore; it won't even upscale SD content that is on a BR disc, like virtually every other BR player will.

Sorry, what? I'm a bit distracted, since my (barely used) PS3's blu ray laser has stopped working for more than 20 minutes at a time, meaning I can no longer watch BRs or play games. And apparently it will only cost me $315 for Sony to fix it! What a bargain!

Find me a piece of technology that doesn't have a chance to break. At least the PS3 has never had problems as big as the 360 has.

ah yes the ever reliable PS3, mine had a buggered disk feeder so you couldn't put any games into the blasted thing!

Yeah, great list of the wonderful aspects of the PS3. I'm always tired of seeing people(not here) saying OMG PS3 FAIL even though they don't really back up their opinions with real experience.

As for the rumors, I can't really imagine a slim model right now. On Sony's side, I'd like to see some PSP-related stuff and maybe some upgrades to HOME.

As for MS and Nintendo, I really don't know to expect or what I really want to happen. Well for Nintendo, I just hope they don't put on an embarrassing show like last year.

The thing is.. I don't want or need all of that stuff.
I was using my mates PS3 and and it seemed all to complicated and confusing.
I'd also like to point out that the Wi-Fi dongle is around $100 - $120 and the yearly Live is about $65.
How can you say the 360s hard drive upgrading process isn't easy? You just click a new one in.
So, $65 a year for say, 5 years? Probably more. Anyway, 5 years means you spent $325 just on Live, and for people like me that just isn't something I want to spend money on, I would rather put that towards more games etc.

At least Microsoft don't take up to 6 weeks to repair your console and charge $315? Personally I'm over all this my junk is bigger than your junk crap.

The fact is that some people find outlaying $700 for a "complete" console the easier thing to do whereas some people prefer being able to buy the console itself and get the extra's later down the track when they can afford them. Personally I found getting my 360 for $400 and then buying each little piece over time the much easier thing for me to do. I bought a 20gb hdd before I got the console for $80, picked up the console a couple of weeks later with 2 games and got playing, then I saved up to get the wireless adaptor and in the end just got a 5m ethernet cable for $15 and left it at that.

The fact is I preferred being able to get my console and start playing it instead of having to wait another couple of months before I was able to come up with the extra $300 I'd have needed to buy a PS3. For other people it's different and for some people it's the same.

Now can everyone just get over it and go and play your darn consoles instead of pissing and moaning on a forum?

I agree that there should be a PS3 price drop on the current model before a PS3 slim is release. Like others have said, it still feels too early in the life cycle of the PS3 to be coming out with a redesign.

The PSP, I can see a new version of that being announced. As for the motion sensor controllers/cameras/whatever coming out for the PS3 and Xbox 360: not interested. Please stick to releasing quality titles without making us fork out money for new gizmos that collect dust a few months later.

Errr...wasn't it that, even with production cost lowered on each revision of the console, that the PS3 is being sold @ a loss???? Hmmm...I remember that being widely known given the initial price for the launch unit was over a grand...

I don't think there will be a slimline PS3 for at least another 2 years.

Oh...& the PS3 DOES UPSCALE standard def DVD's if the drivers are post version 1.80...
