SingStar ABBA Review

PS3 Review | Sony want your money money money, should you give it to them?
The Singstar juggernaut shows no sign of slowing down. Every year the series grows even more, with more titles coming out for both the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3. Singstar ABBA however, is a landmark release, as it is the first time that the same themed music pack has come to both the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3 and it is the first time that the Singstar franchise has focused on the one band. So is the game worth a purchase or are you better off going and hiring the DVD release of Mamma Mia?

For anyone not familiar with the Singstar franchise, let's tell you what you've missed. Each Singstar game comes bundled with two USB microphones which plug into the PlayStation 2 and/or the PlayStation 3. The game disk contains several different songs and players sing along to these songs by following the lyrics on the screen. While you are singing along to the songs the Singstar software analyses your singing and awards you points, while it is possible to hum along to the tunes rather than to sing them, it's not exactly in the party spirit and if anyone does that while we're playing we promptly kick them off.

A classic.

Singstar ABBA is similar to past Singstar games in that the same options are present: you can sing along by yourself, or sing against a friend or with a friend. In terms of advancements, the game still doesn't come with wireless microphones and their is no online play at all, despite the PlayStation Network symbol, which is merely used to indicate that you can connect to the Singstore to download new tunes.

On the subject of the Singstore, one year later we cannot help but feel that the store isn't being fully utilised. For those who want these songs they will probably have to purchase the game, as it is unlikely the games will come to the Singstore. The Singstore at the moment also contains several songs from previous PlayStation 2 Singstar releases, which is disappointing. In comparison to the other music games released, the downloadable content for Singstar is still mediocre at best.

Now, onto the tracklist. The PlayStation 3 version of Singstar ABBA contains twenty five ABBA songs, which is five less than normal, the full tracklist is as follows:

  • "Chiquitita"
  • "Dancing Queen"
  • "Does Your Mother Know"
  • "Fernando"
  • "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)"
  • "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do"
  • "Knowing Me, Knowing You"
  • "Mamma Mia"
  • "Money, Money, Money"
  • "One of Us"
  • "Ring Ring"
  • "SOS"
  • "Summer Night City"
  • "Super Trouper"
  • "Take a Chance on Me"
  • "Thank You for the Music"
  • "The Name of the Game"
  • "The Winner Takes It All"
  • "Voulez-Vous"
  • "Waterloo"
  • "Happy New Year"
  • "Head Over Heels"
  • "The Day Before You Came"
  • "Under Attack"
  • "When All Is Said and Done"
The tracklist is pretty solid, with the PlayStation 3 version of the game faring better, as the last five songs are PlayStation 3 exclusive. Anyone who has heard an ABBA song before will recognise most of the songs, but we cannot help but be a little disappointed that the game only includes twenty five songs this time around, even if Sony included five 'lesser known' ABBA songs it would have been better than a tracklist of twenty five.

They could probably remove the lyrics and we'd still know what to sing, we're not ashamed.

Overall though, Singstar ABBA is a fine release for the Playstation 3. Sure, the series seems to have made little to no advancements in the past few years, but the technology is still pretty impressive, even if other games are adding in more instruments. For great party fun any Singstar game will impress, but those who are keen ABBA supporters should have no hesitation in picking this game up.
The Score
Singstar ABBA will only appeal to ABBA fans, but anyone with even a passing interest in ABBA should have no hesitations in picking this game up. 7

my parents got this for my gf for xmas, she isnt an abba fan, she knows the songs of course and she loves singstars so she had to get it, and now she is obsessed in the game, she loves it, only problem now is she is trying to make me play it with her.
but i have to admit its pretty good for a party, everyone knows abba songs so everyone will sing along.

I got the PS3 version a couple weeks ago, and really love it, but that's because I love the music of ABBA. But agreed, it really is for the ABBA fan, as I can't see the appeal to anyone that isn't somewhat familiar with the bulk of their hit songs.

For the ABBA fan, it's definitely an 8 out of 10.

Finally, I hope there are more SingStar "single artist only" releases. I know there're currently a couple QUEEN song packs that can be purchased from the SingStore, but I would like to see a group of their tracks released in a similar kind of SingStar collection, too.
