Strict moderation hits LittleBigPlanet

PS3 News | Your Super Mario Bros. World 1-1 homage? Gone.
Kotaku are reporting a rapidly growing number of cases regarding user-created LittleBigPlanet levels being deleted if they infringe on the Intellectual Property of another company.

Levels such as the popular 'God of War Demon Skull' level have already fallen to the harsh moderation, as well as relatively minor offenders such as a level entitled 'Failure to Launch', sharing the name of a 2006 romantic comedy movie. There is even a report of a level based around the Playstation 3 console being taken down.

Reports from several LittleBigPlanet users indicate that these user-created levels cannot simply be re-published after they are deleted, once they are taken down there is no way to share them with other users. There are even claims of instances of unpublished levels which have yet to be shared with others being deleted.

On the official forums, moderators have promised that users should eventually receive feedback regarding why their levels have been moderated. For the meantime, they advise that "if you don't want your level moderated avoid anything unsuitable for users of all ages and copyright content."

That sounds crap. Why would they ban things which Sony owns the right to anyway? Makes no sense.
Well that's taking a lot of the fun out of the game. Banning a level because it shares the same name as a movie?

Copyright.
It explicitly states in the EULA that they have the right to do that and that you are advised not to create things that infringe copyrights – ie 'god of war' and 'pplaystation 3' are a registered trademarks.
They're just covering they're asses. No need to cry about it. I don't think youtube got this much attention when it finally started moderating some of it's content a little.

any company that complains about a LBP planet imitating their game has lost the plot. those levels are all inspired by the games and are done as a homage to the original as the creators are obviously fans. the creators don't recieve any money for their creations. if anything it would inspire people to go out and buy the original games if they liked the LBP level.
what a bunch of tossers. games like little big planet are what will push the gaming industry forward. you would think these game companies would have figured that out and supported it rather than try to hold it back.

The same thing is happening to the User-created songs on GHTunes in GHWT. Songs like mario theme, and twilight princess are being deleted,. and users are being barred.

I don't think you quite understand what you're talking about. No one has explicitly complained about their content being in the game, Sony is merely moderating the content so that it doesn't breach any copyrights.

There really isn't an issue here. At all.

Well there gos the fun I would of had creating themed levels (Which is what I wanted most for this game). I think this game just lost a future purchase from me. I understand that there in the right though but still it would of made things way much more better.

I'm fine with it. Playing those levels has to be the least satisfying gameplay experience to be had with LBP. That Mario level is the most boring and out of place level I've played so far. The Sonic level doesn't make any sense in the context of LBP either.

Those levels and the "Get 11 Trophies at once!" levels have to go imo. Bring on some original talent and creativity I say.

God forbid people have to use their own creativity in a game where you're encouraged to use it...

the only one i would be sad to see go is the saw level, but hopefully the author can make changes to it so it doesnt get deleted. basically only needs the name changed and the picture, the rest doesnt really matter.
but yeh there is some great ideas for levels and they dont need to be based off a game or movie to be great, and alot more original ideas are a better thing anyway, and they are proving to be better then alot of these copyright levels.
but still even if you want to make a level based on something just dont call it that give it an alternative name and i doubt its really gonna be that obvious its copying a movie or game to get deleted.

Aww... I was just starting to design my Impossible Mission level. I guess I'll just have to call it "Elevators and robots" or something like that instead.

You know what, your right actually. I guess I could give it a shot and it does seem like a great game and all.

I wish I had a more creative mind though, the only thing I can think of is unicorns and rainbow shields and all that...fantasy stuff which I do love immensely.

The God of War Demon Skull level was great, and really demonstrated what you could achieve with the game (at least in the beta). So I'm sad to see that one go. Could quite easily take out the God of War references, but seems a bit silly, what with the Kratos sackboy.

As for Super Mario Bros. 1-1 and other such levels, can't say I'm sad to see them go. They just didn't work well, although the Sonic 1/2 levels had some well thought out features, such as wheels propelling you along at high speed simulating Sonic's moments of out of control speed.

Levels being deleted based solely on some movie sharing the same name is quite poor. For example, imagine you made a calculator that gave pi to 20 decimal places, and you called it 'Pi', there's a movie by that name, so it should be deleted right? :/
3 years ago
Pi is not a copyrightable word*. The only levels being deleted will be ones with copyright infringements.

*That is why Blu-Ray is not Blue-Ray, Sony wanted to generate money with all mentions of their technology they could.

In Australia at least, if you copy something as part of a satire, it isn't considered breaking copyright. So if you make a level designed based on another game, but you are poking fun at the original, then that's OK and Sony has no right whatsoever to remove that content.

i wasn't getting the game in the first place and now i wont be getting the game till its $10 before i even consider it .

Ironically, getting involved robs them of their best defence against potential infringement by their users.

If anyone does claim infringement by a user's work, and also brought a contributory or vicarious infringement action against Sony, they wouldn't be able to protest innocence for having had no editorial involvement in moderating the content available through their service.

it's understandable when it comes to using imported pictures and naming it the same as the game that the level was designed after, but as long as they don't go naming it the game they are paying homage too, or use any direct imported pictures of that game it shouldn't really matter, seriously you can tell if your playing a mario stage without there being the world 1-1 on the front.
I think everyone should get over it. I welcome these levels getting banned, means people will actually have to use their creativity and make original levels, rather than thousands of copies of Mario and Donkey Kong. Like the Saw level, it has nothing really to do with Saw, just the name. And I played a Donkey Kong level, they could change the name and it might get through.

Sony has every right to remove that content.

They can remove whatever the hell they want since they own the rights to the game. Anything you create - they own. Not only that but the levels you create become available worldwide not just Australia. They're hardly going to leave it in just because its legal in the region it was made.

Satire is an allowed practice pretty much all over the world, atleast where the game would be released. How do you think all those [Insert Genre] Movie's get made?
