Burnout Paradise set to get airborne

PS3 News | Great scott!
Fans of the Back to the Future film series are sure to get a kick out of the forthcoming DLC that is slated to hit the ever expanding world of Criterion Games racing title Burnout Paradise, with one of the new vehicles bearing a close resemblance to Doc Brown's famous time-traveling DeLorean.

As shown by the pictures in our media panel, this DeLorean-esque automobile (titled the Jansen 88 Special) will sport a hover mode, which will allow players to retract their car's wheels and hover at a set height from the ground. If that doesn't get your wheels spinning, then the ability to leave burning flame trails in your wake when you hit the boost button is sure to elicit a few chuckles from your mates.

The Jansen 88 Special is only one of four legendary cars that will be coming to Paradise Island in 2009. The other three that will be included in the premium downloadable content pack are the Cavalry Bootlegger, Manhattan Spirit and the GT Nighthawk.

Although no pictures have been released of the other three automobiles, there is growing speculation that they will resemble other famous automobiles from popular culture, with notable cars like the General Lee and KITT already popping up across gaming forums all over the internet.

These legendary cars will be available for purchase as a single download or in a discounted bundle. So far, Criterion have not announced any further details regarding the timing or price of this new DLC.

Burnout Paradise is currently available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with the PC version due to hit store shelves next February.

How about KITT?

Cavalry Bootlegger has to be General Lee, and GT Nighthawk KITT. I can't imagine what a Manhattan Spirit would be.

I didn't want to buy this game because I hated the camera angle in the demo and I knew I'd never stop hating it, but with all this free DLC I might have to get it. Assuming this is free, of course.

Some people are of the opinion that the Manhattan Spirit is the Ghostbusters wagon, but I'm not convinced...

Criterion have already pointed out that this won't be free content, but buying the entire pack will be cheaper than buying each car separately. Personally, I'm not too fussed since they have given us a wealth of new content for free to date.

The Manhattan Spirit sounds as if it'd be one of the Bat Mobiles I think since Gotham City is "kinda" based on New York. It would also be more in line with the game's style as I don't know if the Ghost Busters van would be very swift.

I've been playing Burnout massively the last few weeks which I've enjoyed immensely. The fact that there has been heaps of free content to date does not engender any feelings of goodwill in me to make/guilt me into buying the kind of lame DLC I wouldn't buy for other games. Unless this DLC actually includes some gameplay, I really will not be paying any money for what will almost certainly just be reskins of existing cars.

Having just completed the offline game 100%, without more events of some sort, new cars aren't of much use/interest to me.

Content like the Bikes pack I would pay for. The supposed new island content, I would pay for. Content that is just a bunch of different cars (and very probably just reskins) I will not pay for.

It's also believed that the free content was an experiment to see if they could alter the resale of the game and make people keep their copies they bought as new to cut down on second-hand sales. So it's not all out of the goodness of their hearts. Indeed, why should it be, they're in it to make money after all.

I think since a few weeks ago the game passed 1 million online players (not sure if thats just PS3 or 360 as well) , that must have been some internal benchmark they planned to cross before they started charging for content.

I'm definitely intrigued to see what announcements they have for the next few Fridays. Hopefully there's some decent content...

Ild say if the benchmark thing was true, EA might play a part in that.

You know, for a second there I thought that news title there suggested planes (ala the Red Bull Air Race) were coming to the game. As much as that sounds outlandish, if it DID ever happen, it would greatly increase my interest in playing again. And it would fit the style of Paradise too, come to think of it.

^Planes are slated to come to Paradise. They were announced a while ago. There's grainy photos of them being played with at some game show on Youtube.
