Kojima believes he will 'have to' return for future Metal Gears

PS3 News | But probably not as director.
In a recent interview with Kikizo, Metal Gear series creator and director Hideo Kojima spoke about his plans for the future, musing that his return for upcoming Metal Gear games may be inevitable.

When the interviewer commented on Kojima's history of declaring every Metal Gear Solid title he has worked on since Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty to be his last, Kojima admitted that his situation was similar to Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki, in that he "says he is not going to do more, and then always ends up doing it."

With regards to his future plans and handing over of the Metal Gear torch, Kojima commented that, "I have ideas other than Metal Gear, and I want to go on to make other new games, but for political, business or technology reasons, there is always a time when I have to return... I would like to pass on the Metal Gear series to younger staff members, and then go on to produce the title." A hint that we'll see a new title in the series, with Kojima playing a mere supporting role? Only time will tell.

Everyone gets all uptight whenever this happens, "Oh geez i wish he'd make up his mind!" - but would anyone want it any other way? MGS is a success because of this man.. if there was another MGS game i'd certainly want him on board in one way or another, and any fan of the series would agree.

i agree with DJRUSSEL -
there can't be any metal gear game without the great man Kojima -

I think he's tired of people just wanting one specific thing from him, he's tired and wants to try and explore new avenues of story telling all together, but since the industry or fans of MGS don't want that, he's probably going to either quit or continue working on a project which i'm sure he's going to end up regretting.

As with anything, you pressure the golden goose too much and things go foul. Lucas anyone?

He might be a great man, but doing more and more MGS games will end up as beating a dead horse. Graphics are no longer going to be the key selling point in games so the games industry is going to find that they either need to revolutionise gameplay, or create new IPs.

provided he maintains that MGS4 was Solid Snake's last outing, i can't wait for a new MG game.

Good comparison there with Hayao Miyazaki. I remember he said that Princess Mononoke would be his last film, yet both of them have had releases this year: MGS4 for Kojima, and Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea from Miyazaki.

I wouldn't mind seeing Kojima's name as producer for the next MGS, but I would like to see him branch out into other projects.

Isn't there talk of him making a game with my beloved Suda51? Project S is the codename I think.
