160GB PlayStation 3 SKU on the way

PS3 News | Plus, a PS3 wireless keyboard.
The PlayStation 3 hard drive is set to get a massive increase, with an upgraded 160GB model hitting shelves in Europe on the 31st of August.

Sony made the big announcement during their press conference at Leipzig. Other than the obvious, PS3 160 will feature specifications identical to the current model. As an added bonus though, the machine will come with around EUR 70 of bonus downloadable content. We aren't actually sure what that content contains, but Sony bigwig David Reeves says it will be "announced closer to release date".

This new super PS3 will come at the cost of EUR 449 (AUD $758). As of yet, there is no word of an Australian release, but we will keep you posted.

News of the 160 PS3 comes before the 80GB PS3, announced during E3 in July, even launches in PAL regions, with it hitting Europe on Friday and Australia on the 28th.

Also, Reeves revealed that a PS3 wireless keyboard was on the way.

"It's very compact, easy to use and detachable to Sixaxis and Dual Shock controllers," said Reeves. It's similar to a Blackberry keyboard, and comes complete with a touchpad to help make navigation simple. It's due out in the states in November, and in Europe by the end of the year.

As a side note, Reeves also said that Sony has sold 14 million units worldwide, with 6 million units in PAL regions in reach by the end of the month.

get a discounted 40gb (assuming they will drop in price) and buy a bigger hard drive from somewhere that will fit (120gb, 250gb, 320gb etc) install it and you can probably get that for cheaper then the 160gb is or even the 80gb....wont void you warranty either icon_wink.gif

thats lucky about the keyboard i went to order a bluetooth keyboard last night but it stuffed up so i didnt bother, i will just wait for that one now. phew.
obviously getting these 160gb ps3s out ready for the playtv save people the hassle of changing the hdd themselves atleast thats all they are doing to it and not bringing back bc...we know how the forums on all sights would look if that were to happen with so many people buying 40s and complaining about it.
and trainwreck my 40 and 60 at the moment are big enough just depending if you want to keep demos and trailers etc. on there or if you are like me and delete them once you played them, and whether or not you will be getting playtv or something like that but like RXWAG said you can always upgrade without voiding the warranty.

I have a original 60 gig that has BC with PS2 games and I have never run out of space - I just delete the demos that I have played
If I need extra space one day, I will install a bigger hard drive (will be cheaper and wont void the warranty(Which is over already))

I don't understand this strategy of releasing bigger HDD SKUs for the PS3. It makes sense for Microsoft, since the HDDs are proprietary.

But Sony was nice enough to let people buy and use their own HDDs.

im thinking that the 80gb is fine for now, will be able to hold games and demos and then next year when playtv comes out ill upgrade my harddrive to a 250 or 500 (160 seems abit small for games, demos and hd movies, depends how much recording and downloading you do i suppose)

Well. This would be good for Christmas!

I bought a 60GB Model on launch. I replaced the 60GB with a 320GB Hard Drive and only have around 40GB left. With all the Demos, Games, Videos (Games, Porn, Wrestling, Movies, Music Clips), Music and Photos icon_smile.gif

Keyboard looks better than the MadCatz one, but still a bit mongoloid compared to the amazing Xbox360 one. I don't get why they can't figure out a way to mount it at the bottom. That'd be heaps awesome.

Fo realz.

Haha. Hey, Asians have needs too. :)

But yeah, cheap 40Gb + 250Gb upgrade is the go for me.

Can PS3 users stream video off a home LAN? If so why would you need an extra HDD for your console. This is what I do for my 360, best.feature.ever. :)

... even if it doesn't support the codecs all my South Park eps are in. icon_sad.gif

Come on, this is getting ridiculous. 40GB, 60GB, 80GB and now a new 160GB model. They should just ramp it up to 500GB/1TB and be done with it. That will certainly help to 'future-proof' the console if it's hanging around for the next 7 years or so.

The keyboard doesn't look like it would be too comfortable either, you would have to rest your palms on each analog stick in order to type quickly/effectively. Unless you have super long thumbs of course.

So a 80gb model arrives on the 28th of August, and then the 160gb model arrives with free downloadable content on the 31st of August? like.. 3 days later? i don't get this at all

Originally at a glance I thought it was like some manner of telepathic keyboard where it attaches to any headband and then sends signals to the device as to what you want to "type"

Then I enlarged the picture and was quite sad...

Looking forward to getting the keyboard it'll save me having to put down the controller and picking up the USB keyboard to type, announcing the new SKU is a bit of a downer when upgrading the HDD is a viable option that doesn't void warrenty, but if it lowers the price of other SKU's i'm all up for it.

Damn, too many announcements, too many SKUs. I own all these consoles, and all these new enhancements that they keep coming out with is getting ridiculous.

Just Read on IGN that Aussies will not be getting the 160 gb SKU - is this true???

just read that too and it also says its "limited edition" which is stranger? or is there a limited edition 160gb and an ordinary 160gb...so the one with the uncharted and pain or what ever and then one without maybe?

Why do they need to do something like this? The way to sales is to make the 40gb cheaper. Many, many of my friends don't have a PS3 because its too expensive. I'm sure this is for a great majority of people too.
I'm talking about the casuals here(people can play GTA, MGS and co. while still being casual). They don't care about hard drive space, they care about the pricing.
