PotW: Which Metal Gear is most Solid?

PS3 Feature | That is to say, Metal Gear GAME, not the variants of walking death tank, huh?
Even with the recent release of the highly anticipated Johnny Bravo: Date-o-Rama, we thought we'd do something a little more daring with the typically topical Poll of the Week offerings, and provoke discussion around a pitifully unknown title.

With 20 years already under its belt, the criminally ignored Metal Gear series is down to its assumed last hurrah for the Solid one, with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots -- a ridiculously-named instalment in a ridiculously-underselling franchise that has brought nothing but ridicule for both Konami and industry nobody, Hideo Kojima.

Okay, so the 'post-modern' Metal Gear-styled 'sarcasm' thus far is flatter than an overzealous Gray Fox -- but the historical sentiments still ring true. With such a legendary line of games, each memorable for their respective characters, commentaries and eras of play, it begs the obvious playground question.

For those who love waxing endlessly on whether love can really bloom on a battlefield; for those who enjoy feeling asleep; for you discerning turn-based card battlers, mobile players or Higharolla Kockamamie fans; heck, even the confident who posses the urge to call MGS4 an early winner of their hearts -- just which is your favourite Metal Gear game thus far?

Have at you, voter... here! Your personal surveillance feed of the running votes can also be viewed here.

And if you’re truly ready to fight for what you believe in, why not head on over and get all nostalgically philosophical with your fellow fans, Kojima style. Justify your vote (and spoilers), hero.

I didn't vote because I didn't want to spoil the stats. I've only played two Metal Gear games - Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2. MGS3 is sitting there waiting to be played, and I have number 4 coming in the mail next week.

I think it was a bit early to make this poll - but it is at a time when MGS is a hot topic. Anyways I liked MGS1 best for whats its worth. Its a masterpiece.

I have only played 4 so I can't judge. I wanna play the other ones, but I probably will never get the chance, unless they are on the mac.

Metal Gear Solid 4. To me, it is the perfect game.

Guns of the Patriots just pips Snake Eater for me. Both amazing games.

By the way, the link to the discussion leads back to the article, not this thread.

Nice poll, but why isn't there an option for those of us who have not yet played any?

Yes, I will get letters.

The one with the most Solid would be number 1 or I'm assuming 4.

3 had a lot of Naked, and 2 had some Solid, but more Raiden.

I voted for Snake Eater cuz I like it most at the moment (haven't played 4 or Portable Ops yet)

I do not enjoy Metal Gear games.

I tried the one on Gamecube, was amused while it lasted, but that was enough thanks. If I want cinematics, I'll watch a movie. If I want a stealth game, I'll play the Splinter Cell series (IMO, far superior stealth gameplay). I understand that some people like these games, but they're not for me.

I love all the Metal Gear Solid games, but MGS4 is just so effing amazing it defies description. MGS2 and MGS1 are about equal in my eyes, with MGS2 having better gameplay and MGS1 having the better story. I like MGS3 the least of the main four; I still think it's brilliant, but the Camo and the Cure systems got tedious very quickly.

I loved MGS2 the best, i dont know why, but i loved it so much, i collected 100% of the dog tags and unlocked everything

MGS4 by a LARGE margin now. MGS3 though still holds a special place.

MGS3 for me because it was my first love of the metal gear franchise.
Pity the camera was damned awful.

I'm not going to vote seeing as I've only played the PSP games, and haven't even finished either of them (I got stuck on the last boss in Acid 2). I'm planning to get into the series properly by playing Metal Gear Solid, which from looking at the poll results thus far, appears to be battling it out with MGS4 for the right to be called the best.

MGS2.

Don't hurt me please.

I voted for MGS, but 2 and 4 would be tied for second place, a close second place.

Having played all, and though personally it doesn't sit as my favourite, I do believe this game gets some unfair negative coverage. +'ed for standing up for it.

My decision is pending the completion of MGS4

I've only played MGS2 and I dont own MGS4... yet

So I won't vote.

Maybe should've given people another week or two to play through MGS4 a bit more, then ask people which one is the best.

Heres how it is for me in two different categories, story then gameplay. I've only played half of 1 so I won't include that.

Story
1 - Metal Gear Solid 3
2 - Metal Gear Solid 4
3 - Metal Gear Solid 2

Gameplay

1 - MGS4
2 - MGS3
3 - MGS2

I think the gameplay one was rather obvious, but for story it was the story of MGS3, the beginning of it all, that probably moved me most, I will never forget the MGS3 ending, which is emphasized to quite a degree in 4 (we knew it was going to be don't say you didn't). I liked it because times were more innocent, and I loved the characters there more, they grew on you more imo, specially Ocelot, what a cool fellow he was as the young brash Quintuple Agent.

MGS3, while I haven't played 4 and probably won't for a while, 3 seemed the more realistic and involving of the bunch which puts it ahead for me.

I've never played any icon_sad.gif. Anybody know a good place to get the first 3 (PAL only)? I was hoping there'd be a box set released with MGS4 for those that missed the first 3, but no luck icon_sad.gif.

havent played enough of number 4 although the intro made my jaw drop, i have found number 2 to be the most enjoyable experience for me. mostly due to the complex storyline.

i won't vote because, having not played MGS4, i don't really want to misrepresent myself (i saw the first few hours being played at BenC82's place the other night, and it certainly looks good.)

i suppose it's no surprise to people here that i love the series. the only MG games i haven't played are MG: Ghost Babel, MGSM and MGS4. and Snake's Revenge technically isn't an MG title. (i haven't finished a couple of the titles too, but that's a different matter.)

overall, i probably spent the most time playing MGS2 and Substance. i absolutely adored that game that i must've finished it a dozen times or more. i was a tad disappointed initially that Snake wasn't the PC during act 2, but i loved the final act, which became a total mind-f**k. i thought it suited the story incredibly well - the first time i played through the revelation of the twist, it was incredible.

and i'm finally having a real go at completing MGS3 right now. for some reason (aka World of Warcraft icon_wink.gif) i never completed it, despite starting several times. now i'm a good 7 hours in (up to The End) and i'm still really enjoying the new things that are being trialled: the food gathering, and camouflage.

i guess, in short, if this survey didn't have MGS4 on the list, i'd probably vote for MGS2. i think it's an incredibly under-rated gem, that achieved far more than the usual "More of the same" style sequels.

^ Seriously, play MGS3 until the last sequence which takes about 5 hours. It's in my top 5 of defining gaming moments ever. It's just incredible.

MGS3 took me ages to play as well, for some reason it never really appealled to me. But it's worth it for that end sequence!

I haven't played all of MGS4, so I won't vote either. But it's shaping up nicely to be my fave.

I still love MGS (the Gamecube verison for it's MGS2 controls/gfx). It's a great title, story and setting.

oh i definitely intend to play 3 to completion this time. i suppose the fact my XBox RRODed helps the situation, but even if it were to arrive now, i'm definitely going to leave it until i'm done with MGS3.

The End fight is pretty damn awesome. took me around 45 minutes to take him down. it was fantastic.
