Break apart PS3 controller in the works?

PS3 Rumour | Two parts, both with motion sensors.
If you think your wallet was stinging after forking out $99.95 for a Dual Shock 3, you ain't seen nothing yet. According to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony is hard at work on a brand new PS3 control pad which splits in two parts, each sporting motion sensing capabilities.

At this point it's all hush-hush, with Sony supplying units only to a few selected developers.

It's not Sony's first attempt at motion sensor control -- the PlayStation 3 Sixaxis launch controller featured a limited amount of tilty fun, but nothing that could really be compared to the Wii Remote.

The development of the new controller is an attempt by Sony to capture some of the market that Nintendo tapped into with Wii. Combine the motion sensor technology with Blu-ray, PSN and Home, and Sony could have the best of all worlds. In theory, at least.

If this is an attempt by Sony to try and replicate the Wiimote and nunchuck, they should seriously think about putting a camera in to get a pointer system going. As its the pointer and motion control that works well for Wii, not just waggling the controls (although most shovelware goes against this statement)

?!?! another great decision by sony /end sarcasm

Best of all worlds? funniest thing ive heard all day, the PS3 has the best of nothing and will never have the best of anything. Ask anybody who has all 3 consoles and they will tell you all the ps3 does is gather dust compared to the wii and 360.

The one and only thing the ps3 has is its a cheap blue ray player, which it wont be for all that much longer if blue ray ever actually takes off like it was supposed to tsk tsk. And msg4, which is the only blockbuster title sony still has rights over, if that 1 game and maybe ff is enough warrant forking out so much money for a ps3, then you really need to broaden your eyes.

Well I sold my 360 and got a PS3 and haven't regretted it once. The PS3 has good games like Fall of Man and Haze, plus more coming out this year.

Well considering your user name please dont be offended if I take your comments with a grain of salt,
also please tell me what you regard as exclusive A1 titles on the 360?

Dont get me wrong, I have all consoles but the best current gen games have been on both, with sony having games like uncharted and MS haveng halo3 and to be honest after playing MGS4 Im more then happy with my purchase as i much more enjoyed that then any 360 exclusive I have played.

The original controller released with the PS3, the Sixaxis, did contain some motion-sensing ability, although it came at the expense of the popular 'rumble' functionality and was nothing like as free as the movement that the Wiimote offered.
That seems to be one of the big misconceptions regarding the sixaxis, it's not that rumble was replaced by motion sensing, it was that they weren't able to incorporate rumble into the controller at all.

As for this news, there's been plenty of talk about this lately, I'm sort of hoping it's not true since I don't think the PS3 needs another controller. On the other hand, it could open some new areas for game development on the console.

Question for anyone who owns a PS3, have there been any games that the motion controlling has actually improved upon? Like a game that wouldn't be as good without it?

Or has the whole motion controller thing been a complete bust? Cause there are a fair few reasons I'm thinking of picking up a PS3, but motion controlling is like a complete unevent on my radar.

Sixaxis It hasn't impressed me so far. Waste of time and money on Sony's part imo.

But I only have about 6 PS3 games so there might be some good ones out there.

Please fanboy, piss off and leave us real gamers alone.

I've spent over 500 hours gaming on Warhawk alone.

Looks like someone is sore over MGS4 not releasing on the 360 icon_lol.gif

It's been a while since I've seen a post like this on a forum! Thanks for reminding me how close minded fanboys are...

Excellent job there, if you can predict the future then when are you not going to be a moron?

Different people like different games, I have alone spent a massive amount of hours on Resistance, I think the game is excellent. Motorstorm is a crapload of fun too. MGS and Uncharted are supposedly awesome aswell.

I think you need to broaden your eyes mate, just because certain games appeal to you doesn't mean jack crap to anybody else. Not now. And hopefully not ever.

Im somehow not surprised by this development, we have been hearing rumours about the 360 motion controller and even if thats not true im sure some sony fan boy thought his favourite console was missing out and started this rumour.
OR...
both companies noticed that nintendo cracked a huge casual market and decided they would also like a slice of that pie.

Both seem likely to me,
for me this simply means that companies are more likely to port games over all the consoles, im not sure if that really appeals to me though since i like the wii's pointer abilities much more then the motion, unless sony and microsoft have that in their rumoured controllers.

Good question. I like the use of it in Foklore - When you try to capture souls form monsters, you actually have to yank it out of them by yanking your sixaxis. It was a pretty cool feature.

Heavenly Sword used it pretty well also, when you use Kai and fire arrows and hit aftertouch mode, you steer the arrow with the sixaxis, and it worked very well.

Otherwise there hasn't been much. Warhawk has flight controls and although precise, you're not as agile as with the two analogs.

If this is actually true, it really makes you wonder what the hell Sony were actually planning for the PS3 immediately after the PS2's launch.

It'd just prove that Sony has virtually got no idea what they should do in the near future, and instead just directly go off the competition and hope for the best.

They weren't able to have motion sensing AND rumble. So they dropped rumble. Don't say they weren't able to have rumble at all, so they picked motion, because the PS2 had rumble.

Dude, pretty much everyone does that. Would it make even a tiny amount of sense for Nokia and Samsung to let Apple undercut them with the iPhone? Of course not; that's why they released their own variations soon after.

I don't get it why gamers take the side of "honour" vs. entertainment. If this works, it'll be great fun- why the hell should Sony not do it just because it would be a Spartan thing to do?

Conclusion - if Sony weren't reactive to competitor's success they'd be strategically retarded. Get over it.

I believe his point was more that they never had any planed to use their own ideas (I don't think Blu Ray and the graphics count), if they did do some thinking maybe the PS3 would have some really cool innovative selling point (if I could tell you what I might be rich), which would add to entertainment more than just modifying another persons idea. So I think the problem is more them not having their own innovations, not so much stealing others.

Why do they need to do this?
Sony should be concentrating on making the Dualshock 3 cheaper.

Uncharted is an awesome game. If you own a PS3, it is a game you must experience, even if its only a rental. Many hours of enjoyment, and some of the best cinematic cut scenes (bar MGS4)

Nokia and Samsung already have came up with Innovative designs, with improvements to existing products.

I've noticed with Sony is a lack of innovation and improving existing products. You can look at all of their stuff and there's virtually something that's as good, if not better for cheaper.

The only regular use for the motion control I've found is reloading in GTA4, and even then I still just swap weapons twice, as it can stuff up my driving.
