SoulCalibur IV Preview

PS3 Preview | Back with some force.
One of the odd games out at Ubisoft’s recent Ubidays event was SoulCalibur IV. The game isn’t being made specifically by Ubisoft, but they’ve teamed up with Namco-Bandai to bring the game out of Japan and distribute it to the rest of the world. While we haven’t heard much about Namco-Bandai’s other fighting franchise, Tekken in recent times, SoulCalibur IV is just about ready to go and there have been a couple of interesting additions.

Following the exhibition of the latest trailer at the Ubiday conference, we got a chance the next day to take the game for a spin. We didn’t really get much insight into aspects such as the modes and options within the game, though we’re guessing that most will be similar to those of previous titles. We were confined to playing VS matches with four characters, though when you’re playing a game of the quality of Soul Calibur, you can deal with it. We’re guessing that we played the demo that will be released online in the near future.

Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions were on hand. Each allowed you to select from one of four characters. They were Mitsurugi, Sigfried, a lady named Hilde and of course, Yoda on the Xbox 360 and Darth Vader on the PS3. As you’d imagine, the latter two were quite popular choices among the attendees. So we guess that the question on most people’s minds is: how do the pop-culture icon additions mix into the world of Soul Calibur?

If you want the agility of Yoda, you need a 360.

Players and Star Wars fans will probably be glad to know that neither Yoda nor Darth Vader are token add-ons, and are as robust an addition to the game as Link was in Soul Calibur II for the GameCube. Not only that but we also played a level based on Star Wars as well. It will be interesting to see just how much of the famous mythos has been actually included in the game.

We didn’t actually use any force powers for either characters, though we were told that they are there. Yoda is very quick and agile, but his attacks don’t do a lot of damage and because he’s so short, he relies on jumping attacks, which is fine unless you’re versing someone else who is playing as Yoda. Darth Vader on the other hand is much more powerful and reliant on powerful hits. While these additions to the game are great, it would have been truly awesome if you could face Yoda and Darth Vader against one another.

As you’d expect from a Soul Calibur title, the controls were sublime and even though we haven’t played the title in a while, they were quite easy to pick up. However, actually mastering them will take time. While experience has taught us to stay away from the Xbox 360 d-pad, we did well just with the analog stick. Personal preference aside, neither control scheme seems to have an advantage over another. After all, the crazy critical finishes were hard to pull off either way.

If you want the power of Darth Vader, you need a PS3.

One aspect that has us concerned about Soul Calibur IV though, is that it plays it way too safe. There seems to be very little ambition in pushing the title or the genre for that matter. Of course, you don’t fix what isn’t broken but there is a fine line between keeping a good thing and becoming stale, as even majestic franchises such as Zelda have shown in recent years. If players are looking for a gameplay leap, they’ll probably have to wait until Tekken 6.

Soul Calibur IV is ridiculously pretty and very highly detailed. We can’t really say if either version has it over the other as the quality of displays was rather inconsistent. Still, Darth Vader did look pretty sweet. Not only that but the sights and sounds associated with lightsaber clashes were beyond awesome. The game sticks to the traditions of no blood and all sparks.

There is absolutely no doubt in our minds that Soul Calibur IV will be a good game and that Yoda and Darth Vader are great little additions to the game. However, the game looks like it will dangerously tread the line between keeping a good thing and becoming stale, as it looks like it is playing it too safe. You probably will enjoy Soul Calibur IV, but for how long just may depend on how much you’ve played it in the past.
Overall:
Push the boundaries, it does not. But provide an enjoyable fighter, it certainly will.

As a PS3 only owner I am relieved that we get Vader. But I honestly don't see why Namco couldn't put both Vader and Yoda in both the PS3 and 360 version.

I really don't see many people who own both the PS3 and 360 buying both versions of the game just to play both characters.

Having never tried a Soul Calibur game before, I'm looking forward to a demo! I've only really ever played Tekken...

So pumped for soul calibur. Wonder if playing as Yoda or Vader will be as awesome as playing as Link on the Gamecube?

Not really fussed on Yoda or Vader, however the chick in the french armour with a lance looks awsome.

Come on! no Wii version featuring Jar Jar Binks!?

TBH I'm still content with Soul Calibur II.

Great preview. I've been looking forward to SCIV and its great to hear that Yoda and Vader play well. I'm going to go with the 360 version (even though i love the DS3 d-pad) as most of my mates who play SC own 360's.

Ah good to hear that it's going strong, I am certain that they will eventually let both yoda and vader cross platforms as DLC so it shouldn't matter what version you buy.

Vaders Apprentice joins Soulcalibur IV Cast

It's the secret apprentince, Starkiller, from the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed game which is coming out later this year and will appear in both the 360 and PS3 versions.

Radness. If it has the design in some screens with the scarred face and the scarf I'm gunna be leaning towards him heavily.

It seems like so long ago since the third title got release so I'm totally pumped for IV. Its probably my most anticipated game at the moment because of the lack of fighting games on the 360. Buying the 360 version I will.

Can't wait! I'll be getting Yoda, but I'm much more interested in Ashlotte and the other manga-artist characters, they look much more... alluring...

I honestly don't care if it isn't revelatory compared to the older SC games, they have announced there are a few new systems, but for me most of the fun is in sparring with friends, the silly extra modes and create-a-character. My favourite feature of SC3 was the ability to battle with randomly generated fighters, the opportunities for hilarity are endless!

My Voldo > everyone.

Big big SC player and this is a day 1 purchase for me. Yes I like the bonus characters...but....Voldo. Nuff said.

Will be getting the PS3 version, for control preference.

I hope Ivy still has a non slutty costume, fucking loved the captain outfit from 2.

Denny, your love of Voldo is as disturbing as the man himself.

As for Yoda and Darth Vader I couldn't care less which one I get. It seems ridiculous that they're there at all. I never used Link in the past either, so yeah....

Talim was always my favourite anyways.

Hmmm since clothing/armor can be blown/hit off i wonder if you could knock vadar's helmet off..

^I find the thought of Voldo with even less clothing quite disturbing indeed icon_sick.gif

I never got a chance to play 3 so I'm looking forward to this. Any one know how deep the single player will be? I'm hoping for a quest mode similar to the one found in 2

As my boyfriend owns a 360, I'll be picking up the Yoda version. Really looking forward to it, I played many many many hours of SCII, ahh memories.

For those who don't want to download. It's keeps getting better all the time. Day one purchase for sure. Vader here I come!

I don't really care too much about about the new SW additions, but hopefully they release either character for DLC for those who care.

As long as Taki still plays well all is well.

Vader had a "secret" apprentice? Wow, what a cliched way to scam an extra plot out of a completed series (IRT: The Force Unleashed).

As for Vader and Yoda, it's moronic not to have them both in each game as the coolest aspect would be a battle between Vader and Yoda, nothing else would be as awesome. Hell, why do we not have a Star Wars themed fighter yet? Huh? HUH?!

Everytime I watch a Soul Calibur trailer I get incredibly giddy. They seem to have the most awesome trailers that pump up the games insanely well.

VERY excited at playing as every character and finding their nerfs out, not just my lovely Voldo. I wonder if Yun Sung is still lowest tier icon_razz.gif

Because the last time we did, it was something we'd rather forget. icon_wink.gif

Yeah, because the Original Star Wars trilogy have never had extra charecter built onto them in an expanded universe have they?
