SoulCalibur IV Preview

PS3 Preview | Back with some force.
One of the odd games out at Ubisoft’s recent Ubidays event was SoulCalibur IV. The game isn’t being made specifically by Ubisoft, but they’ve teamed up with Namco-Bandai to bring the game out of Japan and distribute it to the rest of the world. While we haven’t heard much about Namco-Bandai’s other fighting franchise, Tekken in recent times, SoulCalibur IV is just about ready to go and there have been a couple of interesting additions.

Following the exhibition of the latest trailer at the Ubiday conference, we got a chance the next day to take the game for a spin. We didn’t really get much insight into aspects such as the modes and options within the game, though we’re guessing that most will be similar to those of previous titles. We were confined to playing VS matches with four characters, though when you’re playing a game of the quality of Soul Calibur, you can deal with it. We’re guessing that we played the demo that will be released online in the near future.

Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions were on hand. Each allowed you to select from one of four characters. They were Mitsurugi, Sigfried, a lady named Hilde and of course, Yoda on the Xbox 360 and Darth Vader on the PS3. As you’d imagine, the latter two were quite popular choices among the attendees. So we guess that the question on most people’s minds is: how do the pop-culture icon additions mix into the world of Soul Calibur?

If you want the agility of Yoda, you need a 360.

Players and Star Wars fans will probably be glad to know that neither Yoda nor Darth Vader are token add-ons, and are as robust an addition to the game as Link was in Soul Calibur II for the GameCube. Not only that but we also played a level based on Star Wars as well. It will be interesting to see just how much of the famous mythos has been actually included in the game.

We didn’t actually use any force powers for either characters, though we were told that they are there. Yoda is very quick and agile, but his attacks don’t do a lot of damage and because he’s so short, he relies on jumping attacks, which is fine unless you’re versing someone else who is playing as Yoda. Darth Vader on the other hand is much more powerful and reliant on powerful hits. While these additions to the game are great, it would have been truly awesome if you could face Yoda and Darth Vader against one another.

As you’d expect from a Soul Calibur title, the controls were sublime and even though we haven’t played the title in a while, they were quite easy to pick up. However, actually mastering them will take time. While experience has taught us to stay away from the Xbox 360 d-pad, we did well just with the analog stick. Personal preference aside, neither control scheme seems to have an advantage over another. After all, the crazy critical finishes were hard to pull off either way.

If you want the power of Darth Vader, you need a PS3.

One aspect that has us concerned about Soul Calibur IV though, is that it plays it way too safe. There seems to be very little ambition in pushing the title or the genre for that matter. Of course, you don’t fix what isn’t broken but there is a fine line between keeping a good thing and becoming stale, as even majestic franchises such as Zelda have shown in recent years. If players are looking for a gameplay leap, they’ll probably have to wait until Tekken 6.

Soul Calibur IV is ridiculously pretty and very highly detailed. We can’t really say if either version has it over the other as the quality of displays was rather inconsistent. Still, Darth Vader did look pretty sweet. Not only that but the sights and sounds associated with lightsaber clashes were beyond awesome. The game sticks to the traditions of no blood and all sparks.

There is absolutely no doubt in our minds that Soul Calibur IV will be a good game and that Yoda and Darth Vader are great little additions to the game. However, the game looks like it will dangerously tread the line between keeping a good thing and becoming stale, as it looks like it is playing it too safe. You probably will enjoy Soul Calibur IV, but for how long just may depend on how much you’ve played it in the past.
Overall:
Push the boundaries, it does not. But provide an enjoyable fighter, it certainly will.

Japanese boxarts ahoy.

They look fine. Better than those stupid heads that the US/PAL covers have.

Yet another thing that the internet is going to whine about when theres nothing wrong with it.

The prominence of the bonus characters just seems a bit odd, when the games are not revolving around them, yet they've been used on the front covers, similar to those of Soul Calibur II, but less subtle.

These give the impression of it being a Star Wars game, rather than a sequel to a quite well known fighting franchise.

That said, I am a fan of the box art used, for SC IV aesthetically speaking, especially the PS3 version.

I'm in a little bit of a pickle. I want the PS3 verison because I want to play as vader. However I've read the lead console is the 360 and the PS3 verison (at this stage) as a lot of slowdown and doesnt' run as well as the 360 verison.

icon_sad.gif Why couldn't they have all the secert characters in both?

How about you wait, who knows the Ps3 might end up being up to scratch.

There's no doubt in my mind i'm getting the Ps3 version, Yoda can suck my balls!

Btw Link was crap, Spawn FTW!! rARRrrRr! I did want the Ps2 version with Heihachi but the graphics were crap compared to the other two and he had stupid Gauntlets instead of a proper weapon, besides I use him enough in Tekken so I get my Heihachi fix elsewhere.

Leon, there could always be the possibility of having the console exclusive characters cross platform via DLC in future. But that's risky as there's a good chance it may not happen.

Yes true, Namco have a good track record of getting their games almost exact on all consoles. I think the PS3 controller is better for this type of game as well.

^Reasons for getting it on PS3 are strictly for control from my end. The D-Pad and analogs just feel better for SC, always have IMO.

WTF I basically won the whole game with his 1-hit move that knocks people out of the ring. Ofcourse when it came to caged matches...I had to fall back on my s***ty mashing skills. Still I think he was a great character, love the master sword, he looked cool.

I wish they didn't plague the front cover of SC4 with the star wars characters :[ They should of went for the same nice black/white drawing that SC2 has, which doesn't really make any invading characters stand out much.

The idea of using a little green pixie dude in a skirt just doesn't do it for me i'm sorry, he's awesome in his own game but when you put him up against buff characters he just comes off as gay, so that's why I went with Spawn.

"Malabolgia just you wait!"

Also I heard about that cheap 1 hit crap, that sorta unbalanced crap is game-breaking in fighting games, otherwise known as god-tier.

Because there's nothing gay about preferring the big chain wearing muscly guy.

Yeah, I'd prefer a charecter that didn't get rid of the single most iconic and peice of his costume.

It's kind of like putting Batman in a game except they get rid of the ears on his cowl or something.

^ I'm not sure what you're talking about there, but if you mean Spawn without his mask, you could actually choose two versions in the character select screen, one with mask one without.

haha, if you actually think a little green pixie is less gay then a big muscly chain wearing guy you've been playing way too many games/watching too many movies.

haha spawn more gay than link, i'll make sure I show my mates that one.

His Cape

McFarlane himself has admited that spawns design was basicly made as an excuse to draw a dude with a **** cape alot.

Having Spawn without a cape is retarded and defeats the purpose of the charecter.

Oh dear god the CAPE?!?!?! NOOOOOOoOOOOOoooO!!!

Geez, the Cape are you serious? Did he have the right boots though, cuz that's pretty important too?

Sheesh, a cape! icon_rolleyes.gif Boycott this piece of **** game, there was no cape. I'm sure there was a reason for it seeing as the character is properly licenced, maybe they couldn't put the cape in without having to muck around with the cloth physics and clipping too much or maybe it just wasn't viable to the gameplay so they left it out, there's probably heaps of reasons but i'm not such a massive nerd that it effects me in the slightest.

You're just such a massive nerd that you won't play the gamecube one cause of Link?

There were a couple of reasons I didn't go with the GCN verion (I had the option of all 3), I had heard about the balancing issues with
Link and at the time I had few mates coming over everyday to play fighting games so I didn't want the character to become an issue, secondly it came down to the controls, although the buttons on the xbox controller weren't very ideal the d-pad was actually quite good for fighting games (unlike the new 360 one) and preferred using that to the GCN controller. Also graphics were a little bit sharper on the Xbox version from the reviews I read and lastly my mates and I thought Spawn was way cooler than Link.
See those are good reasons, (Although I hate the x-box controller but thats all personal prefrence)

But maybe it would make more sense comparing putting Spawn in a game without a cape is like them making a Zelda movie except link weres silver plate armour.

It's just... stupid.

yEa I understand what you're saying but I guess i've never been that fanatic about any character to really care about the details too much. Like Kratos could appear with or without that red stripe, with or without the toga etc it wouldn't really bug me too much, infact I don't see it bugging me at all, but if he were to lose the blades it might be a cause for concern.

When a spartan soldier appearded in Dead or Alive 4 as a female I thought that's a bit silly, but that was the extent of it. Still bought the game, still used the character, still rocked!

See the reason I reckon they took his cape out in the game was maybe it would've led players to believe you'd be able to perform moves which uses the cape like in the movie but having the cape and no moves too many gamers would be like "That's stupid, why have the cape if you're not gonna do anything with it?" so maybe they just saved themselves the hassles of rendering and programming a cape and then having gamers complain that it does nothing.
I think it was probbably more just getting the cloth simulation to work without having him trip over it. The cape is pretty much all style with absolutly no practicality.

Having him use his cape as his weapon instead of that battle axe would have been **** awsome though.
Wait, what? Spawn's cape (shroud) IS his weapon, you take that away and you just have a burn victim pretty much.

I think Yoda should be able to fight Vader. Bit silly to seperate them in my opinion. And putting them on the box is also silly.
^Not silly when little Timmy walks into EB and sees a game on the shelf with Yoda, and another one with Vader, and gets Mummy to buy them both for him. Instant $200 for the publisher.

Yes. Any parent who spoils their kid enough to buy them both should be shot.

True - plus multiple SKUs means more exposure - eg Pokemon, Nintendogs.
