Ubisoft confirms whopping install for Haze

PS3 News | Be prepared to twiddle your thumbs.
Videogame publisher Ubisoft has revealed that gamers itching to get into the upcoming shooter Haze may be in for a bit of a wait before they can tuck in to what the game has to offer.

A representative of the publisher has revealed on the game's official forums that players "will need to go through a minimal install (about 4 Gigs)" before they are able to play it.

wow it just adds even more to the apparent suckyness of this game.

^ Bit harsh no? One review and it sucks? It may end up with a terrible GR ratio, but for now I think it's difficult to jump to conclusion (imagine if we took IGN's review for God Hand as gospel).

Not all that surprising, it's fairly common with PS3 games now. GTAIV has to do a similar install (of around 3.3 GB) which takes about 5 minutes. From what I've heard/experienced the PS3 version consequently has faster loading times, so you get something in return. The PS3 has a built in HDD, may as well make use of it. I really don't mind the installs, 5 minutes isn't exactly a long time.

Luke: +100 for the God Hand remark, couldn't agree more. icon_smile.gif Out of the 3 reviews Haze has received so far, only 1 of them is negative.

I'm really getting sick of this mandatory install business - give users the choice, or simply make the system* set aside a certain amount of the HDD as 'game space' and let titles use that to cache assets while playing. I get ansy enough about having to shuffle games on myPC's HDD(s) when running low on space, I should absolutely not have to do the same damned thing with console games. Kind of defeats a part of playing a console game in the first place, really.

Rant aside, I still hold hope that Haze will be a game worth playing.

Edit: * I realize that isn't a dev-side wish, but that's how it worked (or close to) on the XBOX yeah?

I'll be waiting for palgn's review until I decide, but atm it's a no from me as well ...

It's just another FPS in my eyes.

FPS are all the same and boring.
Halo is only the real FPS i enjoy.
COD4 Just got boring and i know Haze will be a one week wonder.

At Ads...While not being totally negative, the other two reviews aren't exactly smothering the game with praise. A 5.8 and a 6.5 aren't really considered "good" nowadays with the scoring systems what they are. Reading the reviews the only real redeeming features are the story and multiplayer with the general consensus being that it is really just another run of the mill shooter. I've got no problem with people actually liking the game and it is only 3 reviews, I'm saying that its not just IGN. It seems as if the publishers forgot to pay few more people aye icon_wink.gif.

Edit: Ahh, that makes more sense. I just saw the the 3 reviews on Metacritic and figured that was what you were talking about.

Ah, I hadn't looked at Metacritic yet. The other two I was referring to were the Famitsu review (34/40) and the PSM Italy one (9/10).

Passa: Yep, I realised that it got a 9 and quickly fixed that. You make a fair point about TimeShift, I was originally interested in that game, then I played the demo and decided I didn't like it that much. Haze is an FPS with a couple of additions just like TimeShift, yet I get/got a different feeling about it and have remained confident that, unlike TimeShift, it would end up being a good game. So far I like what I'm seeing/playing, so it really just comes down to how much I like the final game.

The announcement the game had mysteriously become a PS3 exclusive should have set alarm bells ringing ages ago. Making it exclusive on a console that - at the time - had a game shortage, was a ploy to generate some hype.. but since the game was delayed, it has become largely irrelevant now that some heavy hitting titles have arrived to the PS3. I see it as TimeShift if it was a PS3 exclusive, both are stock standard FPS games with interesting additions and innovations that are just not fulfilled to their potential.

On-topic, I really wish this mandatory HDD installation stuff would stop on the PS3 for the same reason Karai has mentioned. I absolutely HATE (with a f*cking passion) juggling installed games around on my PC due to lack of space (this is after years of only having a 5gb drive, now I have 1TB just so I don't tear out my hair). The great thing about consoles is being able to pop in any disc and it just.. working. The PS3 has a 40GB drive standard - if this trend continues, we're only going to be able to fit 10 games on the console at once. Considering there are multiplatform games that require a HDD install on the PS3 that don't require a HDD at all on an Arcade 360, I find this pretty unacceptable.

Also admeister, I thought it received a 9/10 from PSM Italy?

The irony of these two lines is so good it hurts.

As for the topic, this is what the PS3 gets for having low DVD/BluRay read rates. Inability to stream data very quickly = install.

At least that's usually the case.

I'm worried about the HD issue too, It might be best to chuck a 160 gig in for 60 bucks or so. Hopefully it is just a passing phase and developers can learn to work around the need for an install.

It's fairly complex, apparently it has to do with the loading algorithm used.

Shahan on www.nex-tgen.biz wrote
www.nex-tgen.biz">BD is a CLV drive, so the loading algorithm is different than a CAV drive like DVD. Its transfer speed is also consistent unlike a DVD that peaks at the centre of the disc at one layer only. So if a developer uses CAV algorithm with BD based games, you've got atrociously long loading times that a cache remedies.

Seriously, from the build I played only 1-2 months ago, the game seemed WAY better than the 4.5 IGN gave it.

I will certainly reserve judgement until more reviews surface, especially PALGNs. And hell I may buy it, and if it sucks, return and put the money on my MGS4 pre-order.

Meh. Surely that's not as large as say, Oblivion.

Or the length of time PS3 owners had to wait for the game to actually come out.

Who the hell cares? You install games, it's something you do.

Until Sony bring a PS3 here with a biger standard HDD that can play PS2 games and come wtih Dual shock 3 control they can forget about my purchase. Conisdering the high price you pay for a PS3 I don't think im being to demanding.

40Gig is just to small if were going to have mandatory installs. 12 months down the track when you have more than 10 games it will be a pain when you HDD is full.

Not on consoles, until this generation - until now console gaming has been a simple matter of:
Buy Game -> Insert Disc -> Play Game

Now we get the added superfun step of:
Buy Game -> Insert Disc -> Sit around waiting for it to install, wonder again why PC gaming is on the decline... -> Play Game

No, it doesn't stop you from enjoying your game, but it is a cumbersome and annoying step that should be unnecessary, and should certainly not be considered the norm for console gaming.

The only review that counts is your own. Buy the buy the game, if you don't like it, take it back (EB 7day return policy)

I loved the co-op demo & will be playing the full game with 3 other mates & really thats all that matters, not what anyone else says.

Imo I couldn't give a rats arse if there is an install or not. Sit back, relax 5 - 10 mins & get ready to enjoy the game.

Mandatory installs are retarded. Sadly it's just a by-product of the slow speed of Blu-Ray.

In regards to Haze - you cannot trust a Famitsu review. They have to submit their reviews to the publisher for approval. It's a badly kept secret that money changes hands all the time.
I haven't been too keen on this from the begining but the co-op story mode aspect makes it a winner almost automatically (as long as the controls hold up) so i'll probably pick it up sometime when all my mates have a Ps3.

Personally I want to try and avoid as many HDD install games as I can cuz I really don't want my PS3 to become like a PC where I have to delete installs. Either that or I buy a 150gig or something similar when I can be bothered.

Big installs like Haze, GTA, and Devil May Cry just make me appreciate Uncharted even more... and the way it's always installing little bits of the next level on the harddrive in the background while you're playing the current one... and nothing more than that. It's so seamless and no pauses for loading anywhere in the game after you start.

I'm pretty disappointed after reading the IGN review - I had (I guess mistakenly) high expectations for this game. Sounds to me like a good concept poorly executed.

To stay on topic though it's worrying that the trend of these game installs is increasing. What are the PS3 owners to do when they've got DMC4, GTAIV and Haze on their shelves and they realise their disk space is taking a hit.

I don't know how much these installs are taking up because I've never done one but I'm sure it adds up.

I don't get it, people complain about a lack of hard drive space, i'm assumeing most of them have the 40GB (and i'm not asking about the size of your hard drive so please, don't list it..) PS3 as it is the standard now. If you're so worried about how much space games use either stop buying them or get a larger hard drive, its not like its a difficult thing to replace the PS3's Hard Drive with a larger one, i did it in 5 minutes.

Sony decided to do the Install thing because it cuts down on the loading time, allowing more play time for people who have lives away from their consoles too.
Well, it's true that HDD installs are unfortunate, but they're not as bad as some people make out. Firstly, they're nowhere near as long as they are on a PC, only a small part of the game is being loaded. You also don't have to sit around waiting for it to install, get up and do something else. I went and had lunch while my GTA installed, the time passed in the blink of an eye.

Complaining that the PS3's HDD is too small isn't a particularly valid argument considering it's fully upgradeable to a larger size, all you have to do is buy a new HDD. It probably works out cheaper this way anyway, who knows how much Sony would charge for an 120GB PS3 for example.

Also, as mipac said, you can have around 10 3-4GB install games loaded onto just the standard 40GB HDD. That's a pretty good number, I'm sure nobody here has 10 PS3 games that need to perform a HDD installation. And if for example you had 11, well just delete one, surely you're not going to be playing 10 PS3 games at once? It's not like it gets rid of your save data, and you can just reinstall the game if you ever want to play it again.
