Kojima disappointed with Metal Gear Solid 4

PS3 News | Admits Cell wasn't powerful enough.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is just a few months away and to us, it looks phenomenal. Speaking to EDGE magazine (via Kotaku) Hideo Kojima has revealed that he isn't completely satisfied with Metal Gear Solid 4.

It isn't the gameplay he is concerned about, but the visuals. ""Game-wise, it's pretty close to the original vision: you sneak into the battlefield and can choose whether to do a stealth game or interfere with the battle more directly. But the graphic, side things like motion-blending and the size of the map, totally was not accomplished to my original vision - to my satisfaction" said Hideo.

Hideo himself isn't to blame for the "less than perfect" visuals, but puts the blame squarely on the PlayStation 3. ""When we first showed the game engine at TGS, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y'know, and we were going to work on this and that - and we had so many ideas. But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress".

He finished up by simply stating that the PlayStation 3 just wasn't as powerful as he expected. "I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn't really do that because of the CPU. We're using the Cell engine to its limit., actually. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the PS3 machine, it's just that we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered - we were creating something we couldn't entirely see."

This is a massive shock, like It seemed so much to me that the PS3 had endless capabilities. I guess I will wait and see how this,Killzone 2 and LBP turn out.

I'm not sure what the developers were expecting to get out of PS3/360 but I think Kojima may have been a little too ambitious.

I'd like to know what they had to cut out of the game.

Shoulda made if for the PC.

Kojima has always been ambitious look at all the stuff he says he'll have for the previous games.

His expectations are always one step ahead of the hardware. But I don't really care because each time their still blood great. MGS2 and 3 still look friggin fantastic when I replay them.

Sure he says this now, but in a year or two games (including those of Kojima Productions) will be blowing MGS4 away. He might be using the full power of the PS3, but it wouldn't be optimised to make best use of the power.

This I find hard to believe. This soon into it's lifecycle and someone has already tapped the PS3's full potential? The MGS crew are good, but they can't possibly be that good.

I'm guessing it's the size of the maps getting cut down.

Like LeonJ and donovan515 said; Kojima has an amazing imagination. The worlds he dreams up in his mind are simply larger than life itself, so it's no surprise his vision has exceeded what a mere machine can offer. It speaks volumes about his expressive passion. Now the only Metal Gear Solid title i've ever played is Portable Ops on the PSP (dont - worry.. ill soon remedy the situation; i've got Twin Snakes for the Gamecube), so im certainly not familiar with Kojima's world, but it's plain to see that he has a strong creative mind.

Either way, if his vision has filled the PS3 to it's brim, fans can expect a great piece of entertainment coming their way very soon.

This game has been hyped to the max for a very long time. Its possible that the actual product might be over cooked a little or just not capable of living up to everyones expectations. In this case its reasonable that Kojima is trying to deflate things to a more realistic level else it gets panned.

All excuses that’s all it is lol L to PC Kojima , its not my game which sucks its the Console very lame!

Meh, the screenshots look amazing IMO, and his comments seem to indicate the gameplay came through intact.. but I highly doubt the 'Cell wasn't powerful enough'.

As mipac suggested, it might be maxing out the Cell (something I still doubt, remember Naughty Dog said Uncharted used only a third of the Cell or something?) but it's not optimized enough to get the most out of the Cell.

At least when I hold the game in my hand (finally), I can look at it and think "this guy put every ounce of creativity that he could muster onto this little plastic disc". Makes it feel like I'm getting my $120 worth.

is any creator fully satisfied with their end product?

i love this guy

With friends in the industry they give the impression that making stuff for the PS3 is pretty difficult to say the 360 or WII.

So put Kojima's creative billiance on top of that and it makes things pretty limiting for him.

I don't think Kojima will be satisfied until we're all jacked in matrix style to his games. I agree with Cookie though that he's probably trying to lower expectations which is are hard thing to do when this game is one of Sony's biggest exclusives.

Ken Kutaragi actually said the PS3 will be like jacking into The Matrix. So, you know, can't blame Kojima for having that expectation.

Since when did the Matrix contain giant enemy crabs? icon_lol.gif

Personally I think Kojima would be dissatisfied with a machine that has SLI quad 8800GT's

he's just making up excuses to stay on board and make MGS5!

i can hear it now "i know i said MGS4 will be my last but i don't think it was everything i hoped it to be so im going to have another shot at it and make MGS5!"

Well I think seeing as Metal Gear Solid is essentially Kojima's baby, I dont think he'd be 'fighting' anyone to stay onboard and keep making more titles in what is one of the best critically received gaming franchises ever created.

If anything, it's Hideo who has the final say. I think he's just a passionate person with a perfectionist attitude.

pfft, im not happy with the inability to get a KONAMI ID to play the Frikn BETA...

i spend around 6hours total downloading the beta, then the update. To be stopped in my tracks.. "register for konami id, its easy" pffft.

and i have 1500 ok, so its not my net.

Clearly he doesn't know what he's talking about, the cell is not a GPU, you can do alot of graphics on it but if you do it just means it's really the RSX that's the problem since it can't handle it.

Also I think the RAM would have been a MUCH bigger problem than the cell, 512mb is just not enough for high res diffuse, normal and specular textures for every surface. Especially since he says they couldn't have bigger levels, the only limit on level size is RAM as it only takes a very minimal and almost constant amount of CPU time to support a level of near infinite size, but to store all the data necessary you need more RAM. I hate the 512mb limit on these consoles, even 4+ year old PCs had more RAM available (remember it's 512mb total for both video memory and main memory).

how can you say Kojima, one of, if not, the greatest, game producers of all time, "doesn't know what he's talking about"

I like his games, not a rabid fan, but there is no way you can say "clearly he doesn't know what he's talking about"

/end rant!
