Buzz! Quiz TV for the PS3 is at its essence, the same as it was on the PS2, though there have been a few additions made that could allow for the series to evolve. For the uninformed, Buzz! was a quiz game that came packed with a set of four 'buzzers'. These buzzers, and a cheesy game show host played by a charicature of Jason Donovan (also known as 'Buzz'), came together to creatively simulate an actual game show that you could play. Along with numerous fun modes and a huge stack of questions, Buzz! could be great fun with friends. While obviously upgraded to high-definition, the buzzers that come packed with Buzz! Big Quiz will be wireless. They run on AA batteries, and will switch themselves off after 10 minutes idle time.
Buzz! Quiz TV starts out with everyone's favourite host coming home and sitting down on his couch. You explore the game modes available on his Sony big screen and just by using the buzzer. You can either play on your own, or with up to four other players. However, while the option was unavailable to us at the time of playing, players will now have the option of playing online in 'sofa vs. sofa' mode. However, we weren't told how many players could actually join in that mode. Another new addition to the game that was touted to us was the ability for players to create their own questions for people to download in the future.
Buzz! Quiz TV covers a wide range of categories, in terms of quiz questions. Topics from sports, to music, to food have been covered, and many related to recent events. While we were told that a lot of the questions weren't exactly region specific, we're told that Quiz TV will have a number of question packs, including Australian specific ones that will be available for download in the future. One of these packs was apparently an AFL pack. Even though we weren't told how expansive these packs would be or whether or not these will cost anything, we're expecting that you'll be shelling out cash if you want more questions.
In terms of the actual gameplay and game rounds, they are fairly similar to the previous titles. We came across a number of familiar rounds, such as Point Stealer and Pass the Bomb. Also, you'll have a variety situations where you'll be pressing one of the four coloured buttons on your buzzer, as well as the big red button on top. The variety was fun, because the rounds went quickly and you didn't have enough time to get bored with one.
One of the big improvements to the game is the visual presentation. While the basic interface is the same, the high-definition presentation of some of questions, such as those showing photos of something or someone in question look much more alluring. Also, the characters that you can pick from are even more exaggerated and lively now. We can't comment on the audio at the moment, because we played in loud environment, though it was strange whenever we needed to guess what song was being played.
Buzz! Quiz TV, like Singstar before it will obviously offer more of the same. However, there are additions could only have been done by making this game for the PS3 and they are ones that the game could be all the better for. As before, it seems that it will be one of those games that will be great to pull out when friends are over. And with the online mode now, players have a way of filling in a lazy night in, given the demise of TV game shows. It's not going to be anything new, but as long as you've got someone to play against, it's sure to be fun.
