PS3 sells faster than Xbox 360 during 2007 in Australia

PS3 News | Install base now 190,000.
The PlayStation 3 sold quicker than the Xbox 360 in 2007, according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald.

According to the article, the install base for the PlayStation 3 in Australia is now 190,000, but this includes the 30,000 consoles that Sony gave away with purchases of a Sony Bravia TV, figures not included in tracked sales figures. However, even without these redemptions the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 in Australia in 2007.

"If you stack us up against the competition, Blu-ray sticks out as one differentiator but the games will also start showing what PS3 can do this year," says SCE managing director Michael Ephraim. "And we'll bring the price down as soon as the manufacturing cost comes down. The PlayStation brand for calendar 2007 made up 43% of the total market. So the brand is very healthy."

Update - it has been revealed that contrary to the original article's implication, the Xbox 360 actually outsold the PS3 in Australia in 2007, shifting 159,000 consoles to the PS3s 155,000. However, the Xbox 360 figures cover the whole year, while the PS3 was launched in March. Specific Wii sales figures have not been released, but Nintendo's console outsold both of its next-gen rivals.

The 360 can't fail. Look at it's installed user base. I'm just glad the PS3 is getting the credit it deserves. That way we can actually get some more decent games on the bloody thing.

Oh, and Leon, definately a Apple fanboy. Even though I spend my days selling Vista PCs.

I think the only news to come out of this article (this article and http://palgn.com.au/article.php?id=10379&title=January+US+sales+data+released ) is bad news... unfortunatley.

The PS2 is still selling almost as high as current gen consoles, and the Wii is still miles in front. All this shows is that gaming is becomming too mainstream, and too casual.

I hate to sound pessimistic, but I dare say one day all developers are going to realise the next guitar hero or singstar are going to sell millions and we'll end up losing all games of substance...

Think mainstream like pop music... *shudders*

The problem with decent games is that the PS3 is a bitch to program for. Sony really needs to fix that problem, it was the same for the PS2...
