A whole bunch of new Street Fighter IV shots

PS3 News | In all its 3D glory.
Fighting fans were ecstatic to hear that the much loved Street Fighter series was being revised for a fourth go around (give or take one or two sequels).

However, much fuss was made over the new visual approach of the series, with Capcom opting for big shiny 3D models over the 2D sprites which were used for most games in the series. Despite the graphical change, Street Fighter IV will still retain the classic 2D gameplay which made the series famous.

Capcom have been nice enough to send a whole bunch of brand new shots of the game, with the shots concentrating on the characters who are returning from earlier games in the series. We think it looks pretty damn spiffy ourselves. You can check them out in the media panel.

"And the award for the most meticulously rendered and intricately detailed chest hair in a video games goes to: ... Street Fighter 4!"

SF4 really is starting to look awesome, Dhalsim especially! Yoga Flame icon_biggrin.gif

Dhalsim ftw! Used to use him all the time when I was younger.

3D? more like 2 and half D

Kinda doesn't look likes it's evolved much, more like SF2.1 but I loved SF2 so I will definitely give this a go

i like it cause it looks different...street fighter isnt about flashy graphics otherwise im sure they would have made the transistion over to glossy 3d effects sometime ago. i rate it and will get it icon_smile.gif

Wait until you see this in motion, cartoony games always fall shot in static screens but when seen in motion it all pulls together nicely.

phenominal screens imo

I'm pretty happy with the way it's turning out. E. Hondo looks great and was the first thing that jumped out at me.

All the characters look great bar Ryu and Ken. They are too BIG IMO.

Sprite-based versus model-based collision detection are very different animals, 2.5D or not.

...Honestly, it does seem like they've opted for the worst of both worlds. They're weathering the graphics deficiencies of 3D fighters without any of the 'realistic' model-to-model interaction that makes the more advanced 3D fighters worth playing (e.g. the difference between open and closed stances in Virtua Fighter). All 3D does in what we've seen of the game so far is make the grappling system look more natural... And allow for dramatic camera rotation.

In spite of some of the complaints we've heard, there's some reasonably attractive visuals in those there screenshots. But is it prettier than a ludicrously high-resolution 2D Street Fighter 4 would have been? No way.

I wonder if they rendered the flab to jiggle on E.Honda? icon_wink.gif

Hmmm, so all 8 "world warriors" eh? So my question is who are they bringing back from Street Fighter III?

Yeah I totally agree a true sprite based HD SF4 would have really turned heads but this nah not really. The new shots look sharp and colourful which is great. I like the bars and interface, very slick but then again so it should be.

The answer to your last question is actually "yes, it is". Because what they have done is recreated a "ludicrously high resolution 2D Street Fighter 4" in 3D, so visually it gives the impression of said uber quality 2d but still offers the range of camera angles only afforded a 3D fighter, "2.5D" or not, it's freaking amazing that they have successfully created the "perfect" cartoony, hand drawn style in 3D. Name a single other game that has done that.

Actually no it doesn't because it is 3D. High resolution 2D sprite graphics simply look incredible and are much more attractive than anything that could be done in 3D.

And yeah there has been plenty of other cartoony style games as well.

All naysayers will be eating their words imo. This looks absolutely AMAZING!! Thank god for Capcom, they're one of the only companies that really consider art/style an important aspect of their games and those are really the games that appeal to me nowadays (games with lots of polish and character).

I love how it's a throwback to the best/most popular fighting game in history. All the old favourites such as stages and characters return plus we'll be getting a bevy of new ones with this amazing new art style that's never been seen before. I'm a hardcore streetfighter nut, I used to play part 1 back in the arcades all the way up to the alpha 3 (III, 2nd impact & 3rd strike had on DC so never played on arcades) and I really can't see how they could've done this any better. I was really hoping for a 2d style with heaps of animation but like the director said it's all been done before, 3rd strike had such smooth animations they said there was no way they could improve on it. I would've been happy with the same animations/graphics as 3rd strike but just with different stages and different characters (but with some awesome oldskool ones returning) but this new direction they have taken is just too awesome imo. There is no way I could've anticipated the look of this new style, it's like hybrid cel-shaded 3d but presented in 2d and it looks abolutely incredible!! Just look at the colours and detail in that chun-li stage and compare that to the old chun-li stage! Hell even compare it to the new chun-li stage (from 3rd strike) there is sooooo much detail there and it's looks a little bit more gritty and real but somehow still maintaining that classic street fighter look.

I cannot wait for this, Capcom are the best.

The differences are so incredible the old games almost look crap!

Negative. Both Wind Waker and Viewtiful Joe (and Paper Mario and XIII, et cetera) look like 3D Worlds made to look like cartoons. This, if you have a look, just simply looks like a cartoon with the ability to glance at any angle. This is solely a result of higher poly counts being affordable in the new generation, but it really is the first game where the characters look like high res sprites.

Edit: Ugh's post really illustrates this fact, just looking at those images, without having any other knowledge of the title, you would believe it was 2D and he was showing off the advances 2d art has gone. It isn't though, it's entirely 3d and that's awesome.

You know I love Capcom and the games they make and I like how this game does capture the look of the Street Fighter games but I think that Capcom is making some bad decisions with this one.

Hmmm...nah. I agree that the animation would have been hard to top but they can improve in several different ways. Namely the higher resolution, look at games like Guilty Gear. Its a totally different playing field compared to the low resolution SF titles. Higher resolution = more detailed sprites and this makes a huge difference.

Imagine Third Strike running in 1080p. That would have been something which could not be improved on.

So instead of just bumping up the resolution Capcom have actually upgraded the engine the game runs on. This game will run in 720p atleast cuz it's on 360/Ps3 so you've got your resolution there, who knows what other things this engine might contain....like physics based bonus stages etc.

Graphical upgrades are way more important than resolutions. Resolutions don't mean anything to me really, for ages I played my 360 on an SD tv and then when I switched to HD I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. The lines were sharper and that's about it. I used to play Guilty Gear 2 quite a bit but I didn't think it was that far ahead of Street Fighter, infact animations were better on Street Fighter it was just the resolutions that were good on Guilty Gear....and all that did was make the lines sharper which made the characters more defined....that doesn't make the game look better artistically. I've never seen a game that looks like Street Fighter 4....ever....and that's something worth praising.

Hey trust me I love 2d more than anyone else I know but polygons in a 2d environment when done properly crap all over sprite based games. I've got every single street fighter game that's been released on the home consoles and i've never seen (or ever imagined) it would look that gritty and real but still maintaining the classic look/feel. It looks absolutely amazing imo....and like Dracusis said....wait till you see it in motion. 3d engines also allow for way better effects like lighting, shadows and particles etc....stuff that would look quite basic/cheap in 2d can really do wonders and create lots of atmosphere in 3d.
Well yes if Capcom did a sprite themed SF4 then the game would obviously run on a new engine and have new gameplay mechanics just like all of the other games before it.

I don't think that you realize that for 2D sprites, increasing the resolution IS a graphical update. Infact it is the most significant graphical update for these types of games. This allows much more detail and artistic direction to be put into the characters and backgrounds.

I'm confused why you are telling me to wait until I see the game in motion. I already have. Video is already out and I would hardly say that its "perfect cartoony", it kinda looks ridiculous and out of place.

Sin Ogaris, compare this screenshot of Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix to Ugh's Street Fighter 4 screenshot. Does the screenshot look 3D?

The advancements in 2D art haven't gone, that is just ridiculous with games like Castle Crashers and Odin Sphere pushing new heights. HD sprites haven't even taken off yet.

Seriously look at how bland that pic is compared to the bevy of detail in the SF4 pic...imo the alleyway in the background of SF4's Chunli stage has way more detail than the whole of Remake Ken's stage.....if you read my whole post you will see I mention 3d engines are capable of way more graphical effects like smoke, dirt, lighting, shadows and bump/normal mapping....stuff that gives graphics so much more depth than simple sprites. Look at the awesome particle effects that get kicked up when projectiles are fired. That look/detail just wouldn't be possible with sprites.

Higher resolution really is not a graphical upgrade....e.g. playing a ps2 on av cables and then playing it on component doesn't make the graphics any better....it makes it clearer....that's it.

See what you're failing to acknowledge is the director has already said that if the game were to be made in 2d that it really wouldn't be much of an engine upgrade, the resolution would improve but the animations would remain the same and that's not a huge graphical upgrade. Look at 3rd strike those backgrounds are packed chock-a-block with detail but one look at the 3d screenshot and you have depth of field, shadowing, particles, all that stuff combined looks way better than any amount of detail you can pack onto a 2d image.

Castle Crashers pushing new heights? LOL! You do realise that game looks exactly like and is made by the same company as Alien Homenid? Who's graphics were designed on Java? Just because something has an attractive style doesn't mean it's pushing any boundaries. Games like Okami and Viewtuiful joe are the ones that push boundaries and so will Street Fighter 4.....Odin Sphere as attractive as it is does not do anything new...therefore does not push a damn thing.

Also Udon art sucks, i'll take Capcom's anyday.

At the end of the day, you both have very valid points. What I am seeing between the two of you is simply a difference of artistic opinion.

One man's floor is another man's ceiling.. that sort of thing.
