Devil May Cry 4 on PS3 requires 20+ minute install

PS3 News | But is it really worth it?
CVG reported yesterday some unsettling news about the PlayStation 3 version of Devil May Cry 4 - after inserting the disc into your shiny black behemoth, you'll have to wait for over 20 minutes as the game drops nearly 5GB of data onto your hard drive before you start playing. This is done so that load times will be shorter than usual, and comparitively shorter than the Xbox 360 version of the same game (which doesn't require installation of any kind.)

However, it seems that the PS3 version of the game only chops a couple of seconds off of the loading times here and there, which is not necessarily a huge difference from its 360 brethren. Capcom have responded to this discovery, aiming to justify that the 22-25 minute installation process is 'a real benefit.'

"Wah! Have you ever played a PC game? At least we aren't making you shuffle multiple discs into a ROM drive, or continuously click 'Yes!' on a series of endless Windows dialog boxes" says Capcom's Chris Kramer. "Once installed, the PS3 version of the game has near-Super Nintendo speed load times. You'll be amazed how fast levels load, the virtually instantaneous transition from cut scenes to action and that you're continuously playing the game."

Supposedly the load times aren't quite as Super Nintendo-esque as he claims, but you'll have to judge that yourself when the game hits its official Australian release date this Thursday. Besides, in the grand scheme of things, 20 extra minutes of waiting isn't so bad, is it?

Not bad really, but you gotta wonder how bad the loading times would have been without it, gotta love blu-ray bottlenecks.

20 mins to install? icon_sad.gif what ever happened to putting the game in and playing?

hmmm i wonder if i have enough space after all the trailers/demo's/misc stuff i've got on there.

mmm pc3?

Talk about blurring the lines.

pc3 indeed. Lets just hope that this doesn't become the standard. Not waiting for installs is one reason why I enjoy console gaming.

I really don't see how this is an issue and I think it's more of the major online gaming publications generating news. 20 minutes is normal for a PC game install right? At least they give you the DMC backstory as you install it.

IGN's review suggests the HDD install muchly improves the load times compared with the 360s.

This isnt the first game that's done this... I think heavenly sword does it and Untold legends does aswell (from memory).

I think they'e doing it because while having huge amounts of space to play around with on blu ray it takes more time to load the games information into memory to play. So if that info is pre installed it should benefit ps3 gamers.

However if it doesnt load any faster then the 360 version or come close to the "SNES speeds" then ts a waste of the consumers time and HDD space (more so for people with the 40gb model).

20 minutes is a significant chunk of play time. The question is, will the seconds you save in loading times throughout the game amount to 20 minutes by the end of it?

I read somewhere that during the 20 minutes or at least for a part of it you get a fleshing out of the backstory to keep you amused.

It's an interesting idea and I wonder if other companies might implement something similar.

A close to five GB install is fine on a PC where you can have almost limitless storage space if you choose to.

How much of the HD is accessible in the 40 GB PS3s?

The over time the consumer is may be forced to consider uninstalling this data. At that point the experience starts going downhill.

Is there a graceful method to migrate data if you opt to upgrade the hard drive?
Wait, do you actually get a choice whether it installs or not?
Sounds like Ninja Gaiden, altho that was an optional install.
I read on IGN too that the load times are almost half that of the 360's, especially with the cutscenes.

Install is better than straight disc IMO, load times improve and it allows for more and faster content streaming icon_biggrin.gif

I beleive there is a backup option in the system menu in the XMB, that'd probably do it icon_smile.gif

"SNES speed" loading times is the stupidest thing I've read today. You can't compare loading on a cartridge to loading on a disc/hard drive.

Yeah, it's true. The backup option lets you pick and choose what you'd like backed up to a USB drive. You can easily grab it all and then transfer it back to the internal drive, or even continue loading some of the content from the USB drive if you so desire.
I haven't done a drive upgrade yet (no need), but will do later this year when there's more demand for data storage and I get the urge to play with Linux on my console (IF I get the urge).

Installation is fine. I have no issues with it, and I'm sure it does improve over reading directly off Bluray. I don't believe the rubbish about near SNES speeds. Running a 7200rpm HDD on a PC with a game fully installed on it (no DVD access required) doesn't provide that performance, so who the hell would believe that SNES drivel?

I think it would have been better if they had given people the option to install or run off blu-ray. If you dont want to wait, then you'll be waiting more for each screen..

I'm more annoyed of how much room it takes up on my hard drive. 5gb is 1/8 of my hard drive space.. This starts becoming the norm and soon you'll have no room on the hard drive for anything but a handful of games...

This is the biggest issue with console installs and overshadows the gain of a few seconds here and there in load times. What will you do when you want to download a new demo, but you can't because you've used up most of your space with 5 or so games installed? If this trend continues, it will mean that the limit of the amount of games you can be playing at any one time is restricted by the HD capacity.

I like the idea of cutting down load times, but there should at least be an option to not install if you don't want to. Is Sony just trying to force people to buy bigger harddrives?

Things like this are the reason a number of people don't want to play games on the PS3. I'm sure even Commodore 64 games loaded faster icon_wink.gif . While it's only a one time install it would be definately annoying, especially to someone who doesn't know about the load times from reading on the net. The poor unsuspecting buyer purchases the game, rushes home to play it and then sits there for 20 minutes twiddling their thumbs. Lord help people with ADD or ADHD whose attention span won't last the 20 minutes while the game is loading icon_lol.gif

I agree, as I don't see how this is an issue, but more of just a way for the bigger sites like IGN and such to gain attention.

It's 20 minutes of installing and once that's done that's it, you can play forever. Even if it only shaves a few seconds off loading screens, it's never really a bad thing.

But then again I have a 60GB PS3.

I'd much prefer an install than for a game rather than have it flog the optical drive over and over. I'd also prefer to wait 20mins in one hit for an install than to wait for longer periods of time in-between play. There wasn't really any load times between rooms/areas on either the PS3 or 360 demos, I'm guessing there will be delays in those areas on the 360 retail version.

I'm curious though, could this also mean that there's more content on the PS3 version? One DVD is what, 4.7 GB max, but if the PS3 installs 5GB of data, you could also assume audio could still stream from the disc without any slowdown or caching needed, which would mean the PS3 version has more then the 360 version, perhaps higher resolution videos or something.

I know I'll defiantly get the PS3 version of the 360, I'm starting to get jack of the excessively loud whine from my 360s drive and fans.

Well installing FFXI on the 360 and the installation of DMC4 on the PS3 are 2 seperate things. FFXI on 360 took that long because of the patches etc that needed to be downloaded from xbox live and installed.

Dual Layer DVDs can hold around 9.7 GB, actually.

the PS3 has almost limitless storage too, since you can upgrade the HDD with any standard Laptop HDD - get yourself a 250GB notebook HDD for about $200 and you're sweet.

check the user-guide, it even tells you how to do it.

I remember when I was a kid playing on our C64. We used to put the tape in, load it up and go play outside for 10 minutes while the tape did its thing.....ahh those were the days hehe

I dont know why people would get upset at having to install a game for 20 minutes. When in the big scheme of things this is very little time. Go make dinner, or have a shower, or take a dump. You dont have to sit there and watch the install (unless you want to read the back story).

I know I played a game that had huge load times between zones and it really ruined the gaming experience to the point where I didn't really feel like playing the game. It was a good game but was ruined by the load times. It is a same tho, that with such large hard drive capacities available, these consoles only have 40gb (or 60gb). I know I wouldn't want to uninstall anything if the drive was getting full. Why can't they put a 500 gb hard drive in? it wouldn't increase the cost too much would it?
