Over 150,000 PlayStation 3 consoles sold in Australia

PS3 News | Nearly 50,000 sold during Christmas.
So the Christmas figures are finally coming through and it is Sony's turn to reveal some sales figures. Throughout week 47 to week 52 of 2007, 175,000 PlayStation Systems were sold. This includes the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation Portable.

"We are delighted to have finished the year off in such a strong position, with all three of the PlayStation platforms performing extremely well,” said Michael Ephraim, Managing Director SCE Aust. and New Zealand. “Encouragingly, across the industry we are seeing interactive entertainment being embraced by an ever increasing number of consumers of all ages.”

Over 48,000 units of the PlayStation 3 were purchased between week 47 to week 52. For the 2007 calendar year, GfK retail figures show that over 155,000 PS3 consoles were sold. This represents the highest hardware dollar value of any platform in the interactive entertainment industry.

“In addition to the units sold through our retail partners, we have also enjoyed some very successful sales promotions,” added Ephraim. “In particular, the current bonus PS3 promotion, offered with every Sony Full HD Bravia LCD TV purchased, has seen a considerable number of redemptions to date. With the promotion still in market, based on current sales forecasts, this will deliver an additional 20,000 PS3 units into Australian homes. Consumers can clearly see the benefits of pairing a high definition Blu-ray movie and game player with their Full HD 1080 Bravia LCD TV.”

The PlayStation 2 sold 81,000 units during the Christmas period and Sony claims that the console was the number one selling home console in 2007. The PSP also didn't have a bad Christmas, with over 45,000 units being snapped up.

In what all kind of good reasoning do you count PS3's given away as promos as "sold"?

I like the numbers but even my mum who has no interest in gaming did the PS3 redemption when she got a new Bravia. Although she is intrigued by blu-ray so I'll glady show her some of my discs to show her the benefits.

They didn't. What I gathered from that article is they're talking about that being a further 20,000 on top of the 150,000. They were just using that to show the expected number of systems in homes.

I say good on them, it was a slow start but the PS3 is finally making its mark.

As Sin stated, they didn't claim sold, however either way you look at it it's moved units so there's no reason to not make a footnote that "we've sold x amount but through redemptions in promos we've moved x amount" and really, Sony could have done a lot worse if they're pushing 20k Bravia TV's with the redemption.

even if you didn't include the 20,000 'free' consoles, the sales are still very good - it matches the 360 at the same age - not bad for all the negativity that surrounded it ... from previous PALGN articles the MS reported 153k units (sold/shipped?)around 12 months after release, while PS3 has 'sold' almost this in around 9 months. And well the wii, that's in another stratosphere...

Or rather, consumers still believe Sony = best TV on the market because of years of advertisments bombarding them with that message. They could've given away free cans of dog crap and the TVs would've sold anyway...

Bingo, it's not counting the redemptions at all.

I myself use a Viera but from what i can see the Bravia and Samsung LCD tv's seem to have the best picture and would probably be the best on the market.

Yet they still felt they needed to mention it.

And why wouldn't they? If you'd managed to shift 20,000 PS3's through an offer like that, you'd make a note of it as well. I was surprised to read such a large figure, it's been a lot more popular than I'd been expecting, the Sony brand is still very strong.

That's like people complaining about Nintendo proclaiming the success of Wii Play, it's moving units that's all that matters.

a respectable number, though I have to laugh at those anti-Xbox 360 retards at gameplayer.com.au for saying it had sold something like 200,000 units already

So with about 300k Wii sold, likely just over 300k 360s sold (although they've been lumping New Zealand in recently so we don't really know) and 150k PS3s sold, this makes Australia one of Sony's best markets, where they've sold 50% each of their competitors, having been out for less time then either (Wii four months earlier, 360 a year earlier).

In Japan the PS3 is at 35% of the Wii (even though it launched before it) and as you'd expect 335% the 360, and in the US the PS3 is at 44% of the Wii (launched the same time) and 31% of the 360 (which launched a year earlier).

Is it really that good for Sony if your old console sells twice as many as your new console does?

and at the time xbox360 had no next gen competition for 9ish months, so the sony and wii are doing VERY well especially after xbox's flagship game release of halo 3

From what I can tell about Nintendos numbers they sold over 100,000 Wii's in the same period as Sony says they sold the 48,000.

So does everyone agree that 20,000 of that 48,000 was free on redemption?

No, it's 48,000 sold and 20,000 more redeemed, although not necessarily in the same time period.. The sentence in the article even says 'In addition to the units sold through our retail partners ...' The 20,000 is also a projection of future redemptions based on current trends, as the promotion is ongoing. Nothing at all to do with the 48,000 figure which is actual sales at the end of last year.

What were the particulars of the redemption? Was it just "buy a TV, get a PS3 free"? If so, I don't see how this is a positive thing (it's not a negative thing either mind you). I don't see that "people will accept free PS3s" is a particularly surprising thing. Unless they can determine that people bought the TVs specifically for the free PS3, it's a fairly meaningless statistic.

Have I missed a glaringly obvious Wii/360 sales statistic over the same period? In the US, the 360 and Wii both outsold the PS3 over the christmas period. Is that the case in Australia as well?

EDIT: Kudos to Sony though, 48,000 over christmas is actually a great results for them, and more than I expected.

Who cares, gaming is the winner overall! They all sold well over xmas in Australia!

I don't think it's as clear as you think... I'm reading Sony's Press Release directly rather than reading PALGN's Interpretation

Quote
Over 48,000 units of the PS3 were snapped up by consumers in the lead up to Christmas, driven by a great line up of software exclusive to the PS3, including Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune™ and Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction™. For the 2007 calendar year, GfK retail figures show that over 155,000 PS3 consoles were sold, representing the highest hardware dollar value of any platform in the interactive entertainment industry. These sales were achieved in the nine months since the launch of the PS3 in March 2007.

Sony sure are the masters of SPIN. They say 'lead up to Christmas' what period is this? October, November December? December? Not clear.

Maybe the 48,000 figure doesn't include the 20,000 'forecast' but I'm SURE that the 48,000 does include the redemption with the 'projection' of 20,000 more going into Australian homes in until they end the promotion... it must be a long promotion period then.

Also, I don't know if I trust Sony's 'forecasts' they originally said back September (I think I don't have the press release on hand any more) that they would sell through a further 69,000 by the end of 2007 - yet it looks like they only got 48,000. Going by that 20,000 = 14,000.
