For the uninformed, Fall of Liberty is a first person shooter which is set for release in March on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The game presents an alternate view of history and poses the question of "what if?". In 1931 Winston Churchill is hit by a taxi in New York City in 1931, in reality he went on to survive, but in Fall of Liberty he dies. Without Churchill the British Empire begun to fall apart and the Germans invaded the American Eastern Seaboard in 1953. We recently had a chance to go hands on with Turning Point: Fall of Liberty and the game appears to be shaping up rather well.
Turning Point launches straight into things, the very first scene of the game looks like a movie and it will take players a few moments to realise that they are right in the middle of an attack on New York, the Statue of Liberty is destroyed and the Germans are destroying anything in sight. Rather than a soldier, the main character in the game is actually a construction worker and one of the first things you will need to do is get to the ground. Your character doesn't start with a gun, but you can perform melee attacks. After you've melee attacked a soldier you will end up with a gun and that's when the German soldiers start to attack. Fall of Liberty is played from a first person perspective the whole time, except when climbing down ladders or grabbing onto poles when the camera will pan to a third person perspective.
The weapons in Turning Point are different from those found in other shooters. Weapons that were never mass produced but were on the drawing board such as jet bombers and zeppelin troop transports are all in the game, which is refreshing. These are real weapons that would have been in World War II if it went on longer or if the German's had sped up their weapon production, so the addition of these new but actually possible weapons, is quite impressive. One of the other things that impresses about Turning Point are the environments. The game looks fantastic and New York really looks like it is under attack.
We played quite a few different missions in Turning Point, the story is presented believably and there are some fantastic levels. Both the storyline and the levels should be experienced by the player later this year so we won't go into detail on the storyline or the levels, but the good news is that Turning Point seems to be shaping up rather well. After a stellar 2007 for first person shooters, every shooter from now on really needs to be different and Turning Point: Fall of Liberty seems like it is going to be different enough to appeal to first person shooter fans.
