Gran Turismo 4 Preview

PS2 Preview | We go hands on with the Japanese version of Gran Turismo Prologue
Last month Japanese gamers were treated to a preview of Polyphony Digital’s real driving simulator Gran Turismo 4, a preview disk titled Gran Turismo: Prologue Edition was released and could be best described as Gran Turismo 4 Lite. There is no Gran Turismo mode in this game; it solely focuses on the arcade mode. This is the first real taste Japanese gamers got of what to expect in a few months time when Gran Turismo 4 is released. Today we got the chance to go hand's on with the Prologue Edition and we came out very impressed.

The layout of the game is similar to that of Gran Turismo: Concept, choose a car and a track. We were very keen to try the Grand Canyon track which is the most anticipated track inclusion in the game. Gone are the days of extremely static crowds, similar in vein to V-Rally 3 spectators will jump out, take photos, run from cars and cheer, The crowds are still 2-dimensional but it is welcoming to see them move around a little bit.

After the Grand Canyon I chose the Dodge Viper and raced in New York which was not as impressive. The track is still very impressive but the Grand Canyon is the showcase of the game. There are little details in the game on the trackside that make it feel extremely realistic. I was in a single player race and was not exposed to A.I but it has been commented that the A.I will see a huge overhaul which is much needed.

Control seems more fluent, the car responds well and the actual control feels a lot tighter. The Grand Canyon looks absolutely sensational, there are parts in the track where there is just an orange barrier shielding you from the edge of the canyon and it feels incredibly immersive. Car detail is just as impressive, with just as much detail as in the previous game. The car sounds don't seemed to have made much of an improvement but they were already acceptable. Screenshots which may have looked to good to be running on the Playstation 2 aren’t. The tracks look jaw-dropping. After seeing the game in action it is clear why the game has been so long in development.

The most impressive feat is the fact that Polyphony Digital have made all these improvements to the graphic engine but the game runs the same as Gran Turismo 3. I could notice no slowdown but I was a single car on a track, it could change when six cars are driving through a graphic intensive track.

The only gripe I have about the game is that it hasn't improved immensely. We (of course) haven't seen a final version with all the tracks and cars but the menus look similar to Gran Turismo Concept. Gran Turismo 4 plays exactly the same as Gran Turismo 3 except with a few improvements. This game will sell no matter what, but it is good to see that the game looks impressive and plays just as impressively. PALGN will have more on Gran Turismo 4 as it develops.
Overall:
An excellent preview disk which leaves a teaser for the full version of the game.

Is that February release date for the game or the Prologue disc?

The actual game, however that date is subject to change. A prologue English version is unlikely to be released.

29th of Feb? Its great its that close, but I do feel that it will be pushed back to say May or something.
Anyway, Im looking forward to the final version of the game very much, Im hoping that it will be the best in the series. I guess Ill just have to wait and find out.

I loathe this game already, it'll keep me inside the house for all of the spring and summer.

Don't get too excited, it was a tentative date I got from Topshop prior to Christmas, which has now vanished. I'd personally expect an April or May release.

I'll buy it and I'll play it into the ground like I did 3 and 2 - but the lack of advancement is really starting to bother me from that preview.

In other news, hopefully they will put out a complete car list soon. At least there's a damn good chance we will get a good (mostly) Aussie car in the game (AU Falcon? ahahaha) with the Pontiac GTO.

And, no doubt, 50 Skyline variations. icon_neutral.gif

I wouldn't mind seeing that new DJR Falcon. 320kw of aussie grunt. icon_wink.gif
And what's wrong with the Skylines? They're better than Holdens. icon_razz.gif

As I suggested before, I also think that it will be released in May, probably early May, why do I say this, last I heard America is getting the game on the 30th of April, so we should be getting it a couple of weeks after that. A Feb 29th date would still be cool, but then there is the chance it could have a glitch or something.

Im hoping for at least the BA Falcon to be in game, and hopefully the Monaro too. (Aussie or the Pontiac.)

And Civic's statement is true, they are better then Holdens. You either love or hate Skylines...

Skylines vs. Holdens? Oh god. While Skylines may be more refined than the majority of Holdens - mainly due to their sole purpose of being a sports car - it's extremely unfair to compare one car to an entire brand. Especially when I doubt either of you have driven all of them.

Hey, I love Skylines - I just don't see the point in the 30 or so variations it has in GT3.

And the BA Falcon would be cool. I still maintain the hope you will be able to do engine transplants. icon_biggrin.gif

...Or not.

I agree with you, it's an unfair comparison of cars, because the Skyline is a Sports Performance car and Holden is a family Sedan. (Basically)
I'll have you know though, that I have driven quite a few different Holden's. (Barina, SS Commodore, Astra, VT, VX and VY models.)
I have also driven an GTR34 Skyline. (I'm not trying to brag or anything, just saying it cause you said you doubted we had..)

And yes, 30 or so Skylines is going a bit far, but what can you do about it? Not much....

Of course there'll be countless Skylines vartiations in the game - Polyphony Digital and Skylines are Japanese. icon_razz.gif
If GT4 was a local game, you'd bet there'd be countless Commodore variations. icon_wink.gif

Indeed, hence why the main cars in the game are all Japanese (Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda etc.) While there is American cars too, the main focus still remains Japanese. And actually, I reckon if it was made locally, it would only have a few Commodore variations, and the main focus would be American cars...

Holdens, and Skylines hey.
206 kws of AWD power, verses a heaver but more powerful 300 kw GTS. Maybe a second in acceleration the Skyline would be better but The GTs would eat it for breakfast. As it would any Foul- Con.

someway i didnt get that.. icon_eek.gif

but other gran turismo' were great even if i didnt play them much... if 1 was good and 3 was good.. then maybe this sequel could be good too.. icon_wink.gif

Obviously you dont'. I was talking about a certain model of car in Australia that the people talking about Holden would know about.
Holdenfan, your statement is true, to some extent.
Off the line, the Skyline would beat any Holden or Ford that's in Australia, but then of course at top speed, the Holden/Ford would win. But there is one factor that's forgotten about Sport Performance cars, in Australia, they have speed limiters. If they didn't, then the Sport Performance cars would win.

JuavT, you suck at life.

And Skylines vs. Holden/Ford? My head hurts.

Although the R26DETT is apparently one of the best engines in the history of everything.

NismoR34 Your statement has no credentials whatsoever. Sports vehicles in Australia are not Speed limited. In Europe they are. Unless of course you are talking about the 206kw, well thats Japan's fault not Australia's.
When we pit a Skyline against a Corvette, Corvette being an American Muscle car would easily our rival the skyline for everything. Even acceleration. Now take into considerating the Engine inside the Corvette is inside a [ basic] $110,000 GTS commodore. Restrictions are on the Skyline, so if we take them off and allow it to have the 300 kw's it produces, let's be fair and take the restrictions off the GTS, its interesting to see a 300 kw unrestriced skyline verses a 500kw GTS commodore [ 500 kws is what the engine would probably run if it ran a design right down to the colour of the Vette's engine. ]
So in conclusion i will say,. At the moment Skylines would be quicker off the mark but, a GTS would eat it.
