New Metal Gear Solid 3 details surface

PS2 News | New details for Snake Eater.
A new issue of PSM (probably from Spain, as this news was broken on a Spanish board) has revealed new details on Konami's highly anticipated sequel Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

  • AI has been massively overhauled, and will feature a tracking system in the outdoor environments, as Snake will leave footprints behind when he walks around. Indoors, the AI will be much like that of Sons of Liberty.

  • The story won't jump around. It'll flow continuously from the point you land in the jungle to the end of the game.

  • Kojima and his team are currently deciding on the level of tracking the dogs will employ - whether they will stop at the water's edge like in a typical Hollywood action film, or whether they will relentlessly track you, like in real life.

  • Kojima has also pointed out that infiltration of the base is up to the player, i.e. the player chooses the way he/she gets into the base. There will be multiple entrances.

  • The amount of food you eat won't affect your weight (visually), but it will affect the quality of your aiming, movement speed, etc.

  • Control is identical to Sons of Liberty

  • The knife is used for cutting away foilage, but can also be used for interrogating enemies. This is done by using the analog buttons - the harder you press the button, the more Snake will dig the knife in, until he slashes the guard's throat.

  • The amount of equipment you can carry will be limited, as the game is focused on survival.

  • The team is still considering whether or not you can pick ammo and equipment up off guards.

  • The codec is gone, but has been replaced by a similar device, which is said to have functions similar to a Pokédex.

  • Radar will be optional, but playing without it will help with immersion.

  • There will be less cutscenes in general, and they will be interactive, though Kojima has not shed any light on how this will work.

  • Kojima says this will "probably" be his last Metal Gear title, though he will continue the series if he feels nobody else is capable of doing so.

  • When asked if you could control vehicles, Kojima answered 'Probably....Yes'

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is due for release in 2004, but details are scant, and Konami is keeping its cards close to its chest. PALGN expects to see another trailer at E3 2004 in May, but will have any new details on the game as soon as they are unveiled.

I agree, looks like he's about duplicating real life now, so it's probably going to take a while to get through this one. Although he has to be limited to reduced some things to non-realistic actions, i.e. the Tracking Dogs. For better playability (with reduction of realism), the dogs should loose scent in water, yet if they have vision contact they would not loose track.

Any news as to when this actually takes place? Before or after SOL, or even MGS1. Another question is as to whether or not it will be ps2 exclusive, or will it be like mgs2, exclusive for a while, then inclusive.

Just some thoughts that popped into my head after reading the article.

Sounds like this one will have more of a Deus Ex-type gameplay, the sound of which I like an awful lot.

I wonder what neat ending this one will have... SOL'a was a bit lengthy and disinteresting.

what do you mean by deus ex-type gameplay, if the game is deu sex-type game i dont want to even see it

Similiar in that there are several ways to go about a mission, that certain things can affect the player in various ways altering/affecting his abilities and the way he acts, and to a certain extent that the cutscenes will be interactive.

All of these are crucial gameplay elements in the Deus Ex games.

if the game is deu sex-type

I'd bet you wanna see that, eh icon_wink.gif

One thing worries me:

"Control is identical to Sons of Liberty"

Not that the control is bad, but it could use some reworking to make it smoother.

Aside from that, sounds good - hopefully it will be longer than 10 hours through this time around.

my opinion is that sons of liberty had better control then Mgs 1 had..
