Unfortunately for consumers, the PSX has been forced to suffer some downgrades so that Sony can get the product out on shelves for the Christmas rush in Japan.
These downgrades include:
- No CD-R playback
- No DVD+RW playback, though DVD-RW will be supported
- No MP3 playback
- TIFF and GIF no longer supported
- Write speed lowered from 24x to 12x
Another interesting omission from the console is the broadband internet socket, effectively eliminating the ability to use the Playstation 2's online services and Sony Music's online services.
The PSX set to retail for 79,800 Yen (AU$1,001) for the 160 GB model and 99,800 Yen (AU$1,252) for the 250 GB model.
Sony haven't ruled out reintroducing these features for the European and American releases of the console, but we're not getting our hopes up.
