The most important element for every Singstar title is the tracklist, as there are essentially no other variations in the Singstar titles these days. As indicated by the name, the tracks in Rock Ballads are err.. Rock Ballads. We'd argue Avril Lavigne's 'I'm With You' probably doesn't classify as a rock ballad, but somebody's definitely pushing her catalogue, as she seems to pop up in every second or third Singstar release these days. The full tracklist for Singstar Rock Ballads is as follows:
- Air Supply - All Out of Love
- Mr Big - To Be With You
- Alannah Myles - Black Velvet
- Mr Mister - Broken Wings
- Anastasia - Left Outside Alone
- Mr Mister - Kyrie
- Avril Lavigne - I'm With You
- Nikelback - How You Remind Me
- Boston - More Than A Feeling
- Nilsson - Without You
- Boy Meets Girl - Waiting For A Star To Fall
- Poison - Every Rose Has Its Thorn
- Cutting Crew - I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight
- Queen - The Show Must Go On
- Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
- Roxette - It Must Have Have Been Love
- Duran Duran - Ordinary World
- Roxette - Listen To Your Heart
- Europe - Carrie
- Starship - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now
- Heart – Alone
- Sugababes - Too Lost In You
- Jon Secada - Just Another Day
- The Calling - Wherever You Will Go
- Lone Star - Amazed
- Tina Arena - Chains
- Marc Cohn - Walking In Memphis
- Toto - Africa
- Meatloaf - I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)
- T'Pau - China In Your Hands
Overall the tracklist is pretty decent. There are a few songs that you'd think would be better for the game than they actually are, such as Poison's 'Every Rose has Its Thorn' and Meatloaf's 'I'd Do Anything for Love' (which, we might add needs to be sung at the full length for maximum enjoyment). It is however a little disappointing that Rock Ballads doesn't feature a localised song list either, so Australians get the same tracklist as those of other PAL regions.
Our complaints with Singstar remain the same as they have for the previous titles. The gameplay modes are carbon copies of previous Singstar games, so you can sing solo for practice or battle it out against a friend. You can also sing in a duet with a partner if that is your preferred style as well. But there is no real single player mode in the game, so while Singstar Rock Ballads may be ideal for multiplayer, it's unlikely to be worth it for those who don't entertain much.
Another complaint is that the USB microphone technology is really starting to show its age. The USB microphones judge a player and assign them a rating based on the tone of your singing. This essentially means that rather than actually sing the the lyrics you could hum or make up your own lyrics, and as long as your tone is correct you'll get maximum points. When playing in a group if someone is losing the temptation is definitely there to start fooling around, and the problem is that by doing this they might actually win.
When choosing whether to pick up Singstar Rock Ballads the only real thing that should be considered is whether the tracklist is appealing or not. Sony are onto a winning formula and it's unlikely to change, but with Singstar games coming out every few months now, gamers now need to pick and choose which Singstar titles to pick up, Rock Ballads isn't the strongest Singstar game available, but still provides enough enjoyment and is worth adding to your collection if the tracklist is appealing to you.
