PALGN's PlayStation 2 Top 5

PS2 Feature | The votes are in. Check to see what came out on top...
The Reader's Said:
After a rather average response, the voting was particularly tight. A lot of the votes were wide spread too, with many games just missing out on the top five placings. But still, that didn't stop a clear winner from emerging. Thank you everybody for your votes, they were much appreciated. On with the votes...

1. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
2. Grand Theft Auto 3
3. Gran Turismo 3
4. Ico
5. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution

We Say:
We largely agreed with the readers. However, thanks to our less than packed staff, voting was especially tight. Remember all the games listed are top quality games, all deserving of your attention. Anyway, now, our top 5 PlayStation 2 games...

5. Final Fantasy X - 7 votes
This was the first Final Fantasy title to be developed for the PlayStation 2. It was also the first Final Fantasy to include full voice acting. Whilst being one of the more linear in the series, it's great graphics and presentation won over fans and casual gamers alike. So popular in fact that it was been the first and only title in the series to receive a direct sequel. With a number of firsts for the series combined with a top game, there's no wonder that this game managed to make it to #5 in our top PS2 games.

4. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - 8 votes
Rockstar's eagerly awaited follow up to the game that put the PlayStation 2 was a somewhat hit and miss afair. While still absolutely fantastic, many were expecting an entire new game - something with Rockstar never promised - and as a result were left dissapointed. But the people who realised that GTA: Vice City[i] was only a suped up version of [i]Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City was a sublime gaming experience. Despite only really being a reworking of GTAIII, Rockstar managed to implement so many more features in not much longer than a year. New weapons to shoot at cops, a huge new sprawling city to explore, new customes to try on, plenty of new missions and the immense fun provided by the addition of motorbikes all helped make Grand Theft Auto: Vice City our fourth favourite PS2 game of all time.

3. Grand Turismo 3 - 10 votes
Some what of a mixed bag, this one. The game, while technically brilliant and visually breathtaking, is basically a reworking of the PSX classics. That said, the game still has plenty to offer. As mentioned, the graphics in GT3 are some of the best ever seen in a video game, still holding up magnificently two years down the track. The physics model, while far from perfect and lacking a damage system, is still one of the best around in games, with cars handling fairly close to as they would in real life. The cars can even be tinkered with thanks to the variety of upgrades sported by the game - sadly not to the extent of being able to put a twin turbo V8 inside a mini, though. Sadly, the game does lack a sense of speed if you aren't in one of the faster cars - particularly if you step back into a bottom end car afterward. But still, even if the gran turismo mode gets too samey, even if the AI is quite suspect, just the

2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty - 13 votes
Quite possibly one of the most hyped games in history. Often critizised for being more of a movie than a game and the fact that Raiden is a raving pussy, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty is recognised amongst the PALGN staff as the second best PS2 game out there. Why, you ask? Simply put, very few other games out there immerse you in their gaming world more than MGS2. The story - while a bit silly at times - is definately good enough to keep you on the edge of your seat as you play through the gaming world, slowly uncovering the mystery of the Metal Gear Ray, Solid Snake and Raiden. The gameplay itself, while fiddly at times, is simply brilliant. Never before has hiding in lockers and dangling off walkways to escape the pursuing guard ever been so much fun. James Bond has got nothin' on Snake.

1. Grand Theft Auto 3 - 20 votes
Very rarely will you meet somebody who doesn't like Grand Theft Auto III. "It gets boring," they complain. "Killing people isn't fun," they whine. "It's immoral," they cry. Pfft, whatever. Grand Theft Auto III sells more copies than any other PS2 game for a reason - it's just damned good fun. You are plonked into a HUGE gaming world with nothing but the clothes on your back, and aren't really told to do anything in particular. A bit of exploration reveals that you can beat that guy up over there. For no apparent reason. And still his money. It doesn't take long to realise that you are allowed to do whatever you want. Of course, there is a main storyline in the game - kill the bitch who left you to die and take over her crime empire. To do this you take orders and screw over almost every crime baron in the city - and that's just the missions. If you get stuck or bored, why not go steal that car and run over a few innocent people? GTAIII promises so much more than just gratitous violence. It's a challenging, huge and fun game and really, what more can you ask? GTAIII is our #1 PS2 game for a reason. Check it out now.

Some great games in the top 5 there but I kinda knew that they would be there! Grand Theft Auto 3 definatly deserved the number one spot in the staff's top 5! Its a brilliant game! Vice City in the readers number one spot? I thought FFX or GTA3 would have gotten that one!

Vice City is the better game, but, it's also just a reworking of GTA3. VC had the feeling that you'd 'been there, done that' whilst GTA3 was basically entirely new. Hence the #1 placing. icon_smile.gif]

And VF4 sucking? Um, no.

well my opinion is that time of the fighting games that are viewed from the side of the fighters is over.... cause they all are like tekken series
like Virtua fighter 2 is just as same as Virtua fighter 3. very boring games indeed if you happen to be alone with it....
and ps. gta3 was crappy there was things missing from it wich were fixed in vice city

...I don't really know what you're getting at. All fighting games are like Tekken, or something? Anyway, I've never played a VF game prior to 4, and I found 4 to be a fairly engrossing game for a fighter. I didn't really get into the game seriously, but I still put a bit of time into the Kumite or whatever the hell it is mode while I had it. Top stuff.

And GTA3 crappy? Huh? Things missing from it? About the only substantial thing VC added to GTA3 was motorbikes.

I preferred GTA over Vice City. Got bored with VC...very bored. GTA was good tho.

The only fighters I like is the Soul Calibur games.
