New Simpsons game in the works

PS2 News | "Action-comedy" coming to every console ever. Almost.
It's rapidly turning into an EA-themed news day here, but here's an unmissable titbit that just arrived in our inbox: there's a new Simpsons game in development. Developed by the good folks at EA's Redwood Shores studio, The Simpsons Game (a working title for now, we're told) will be appearing on all three next-gen consoles, both handhelds and the PlayStation 2.

While solid gameplay details (the title is described by the press release as an "action-comedy") are relatively thin on the ground, it is known that Homer, Marge, Bart and Lisa will all be playable. We also know it will be scripted by the TV show's Emmy Award-winning writers, and that the game will benefit from having the full cast of voice actors from the TV show on board.

"Our goal in developing The Simpsons Game is to create the most original game ever, which is a lofty goal and only possible given the close collaboration with 'The Simpsons' creative team," said Scot Amos, Executive Producer of the project. "We're also especially proud of the game's warm visual feel, which captures - for the first time ever in a game - the look of the TV series."

In the referential spirit of the show, the title is apparently packed with parodies and nods to other games and the gaming industry; according to GameSpot, which has already seen the title running, the likes of Grand Theft Auto, Batman, Medal of Honor, Everquest and even EA itself are just some of the targets that the game will poke fun at. The site also points out that the game uses cel-shading, will boast 16 levels, and that two-player co-op will be included.

The Simpsons Game is scheduled for release in Autumn, or Spring for Southern Hemispherians.

If they can pull off video game parodies and do them well, this could be a nice game (always thought the Family Guy game should have had video game references in keeping with its style).

Eh, I'll buy the damn thing anyway, but 2 player co-op sounds nice.

Well I liked Hit n Run, but something more origional does sound good.

I didn't really like the Family Guy one.

the last one (GTA clone) was good, so I'll keep optimistic about this one

Bartman has been around for a while, he even had his own song on the top 40 in the 90's

I know, but this one has "Begins" added to the end. icon_biggrin.gif

I hope as a side note that they throw in The Simpsons Konami arcade game of the 90's as a bonus feature. It is sorely missed..

This game looks freaking sweet. Hope it has more extended gameplay than Simpsons Hit and Run.

Im kind of over the Simpsons but I agree that Hit & Run was great fun. Here's hoping they do something special with this one. The preview shows some promise.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a must!

Either way, I've always looked at The Simpsons games with suspicion, but this one is looking quite promising at this stage.
I like the video game parody concept a lot.

If they pull this off, it may very well be the first The Simpsons game I buy since 'Bart vs. The World' back on the NES.

Thanks El Taco. That brought back some memories alright. I forgot how many levels Konami packed into that game. It would be great it they made another beat em up style Simpsons arcade game reworked from the ground up to include some of the more recent elements of the show for all the fans out there. I suppose it wouldnt be viable though.
