While solid gameplay details (the title is described by the press release as an "action-comedy") are relatively thin on the ground, it is known that Homer, Marge, Bart and Lisa will all be playable. We also know it will be scripted by the TV show's Emmy Award-winning writers, and that the game will benefit from having the full cast of voice actors from the TV show on board.
"Our goal in developing The Simpsons Game is to create the most original game ever, which is a lofty goal and only possible given the close collaboration with 'The Simpsons' creative team," said Scot Amos, Executive Producer of the project. "We're also especially proud of the game's warm visual feel, which captures - for the first time ever in a game - the look of the TV series."
In the referential spirit of the show, the title is apparently packed with parodies and nods to other games and the gaming industry; according to GameSpot, which has already seen the title running, the likes of Grand Theft Auto, Batman, Medal of Honor, Everquest and even EA itself are just some of the targets that the game will poke fun at. The site also points out that the game uses cel-shading, will boast 16 levels, and that two-player co-op will be included.
The Simpsons Game is scheduled for release in Autumn, or Spring for Southern Hemispherians.
