No "HD mode" for PAL God of War II

PS2 News | Not enough disc space.
The PAL version of God of War II will ship without the higher resolution feature that can be unlocked in the NTSC version. Though not true high-definition, the secret mode in the NTSC game (which is accessed by using a code) does allow the title to run at an eye-pleasing 640 x 488 resolution.

Alas, us PAL gamers are due to miss out on this most excellent of hidden gems, because the spare disc space is needed to fit in the various European languages required for the PAL release. Sacré bleu!

"Whereas the US version still had enough room to incorporate this feature it had to be removed for ours because we had to use the final disc space for localisation (all the extra European languages)," said a Sony Europe spokesperson to Pro-G.

Oh really, I thought Dvd9 was sufficient for this gen let alone last gen? icon_rolleyes.gif

This was to be expected but I really didn't expect it from a Ps2 game. More evidence that Sony were right to go with Blu-Ray and I see this trend continuing.

See ladies and gentlemen this is why we import because as usual pal gamers get screwed hehe icon_smile.gif. Either way this game looks amazing can't wait.

What resolution are we getting? Oh well. doesn't matter, gonna be a great game nevertheless.

It really shouldn't change how the game looks. I'd rather have a longer game, then be able to play GoW2 in HD.

^ It's got nothing to do with the game being longer and all to do with the Pal region needing more language options which therefore took up more disc space...hence they couldn't fit the higher resolution on the disc. Read the article..

Agreed, I'm very happy with having Blu-Ray in my PS3 icon_smile.gif. Unfortunatly I'm not happy with the way PAL regions get treated by publishers, we're always paying a premium for a worse product and expected to wait up to (and sometime over) 6 months before it gets released here after the US/Japan.

and thus sony puts another nail in its coffin for me (cause you know the PAL ps3 downgrades and constant release delays didn't already signal its neglect of us here). Seriously, sony wants to "clamp down" on imports but then continues to give us real reasons to make it the only way to play.

But lets stay positive. GOW PAL Exclusicve -- Whilst the ethno-centric US play-base willl only have one langauge, in an effort to recognise Australia's multi-cultural society and foster community relations Sony has today announced that it will be sacrificing some graphic up-grades in its latest titles in order to allow its players to learn and enjoy more languages.

That does it, I was gonna wait but I will import it today.

Just out of curiosity....did the U.S get the Collector's Edition with the bonus disc etc? If not....then I guess that's some consolation for us PAL gamers.

Woot for the inclusion of French language!

For a more authentic experience, make sure to play in greek.

currently, i dont really mind about the HD. I dont have the TV at the moment anyway so it doesnt really phase me, ill still appreciate the game a great deal. What i dont appreciate is how PAL gets constantly gipped.

Yes...they did. The 2-disc set is standard. A single disc version doesn't exist.

1) Every new PS3 being produced around the world has the emotion engine removed.
2) Every company delays their titles *cough*SuperPaperMario*cough*.
3) They made the PS3 region free, if you're unhappy about PAL gamers treatment, then they've opened the door for you to import.

I don't think people realise how minor this resolution is. Its not even classified as HD. Hell, its not even widescreen. icon_confused.gif

People never want something more than when you tell them they can't have it. icon_rolleyes.gif

The official statement is that while the reslution is higher, it makes the game run a little slower. So really its just a nice bonus. Having both a USA and PAL PS2, and a PAL PS3, I cant decide. I wanted to run it on my PS3, but SixAxis has no rumble (which in GoW I think is impoortant) and I couldnt be bothered getting my old brick NTSC PS2 out..... I think I can wait for PAL release, maaaaaaaaybe.

There's a widescreen setting, tho it's stretched 480p. There should still be a 480p mode in the pal release, the HD mode uses "full buffers" or some such, so I guess it makes 480p look better.

Gamers dont want HD

Gears of War fit on a standard DVD. It's all HD, so is every 360 game. This is just Sony screwing us over again. We get everything late, and we get it gimped. I might import it too, maybe from China.

Every 360 game confirms that despite what Sony keeps trying to "prove", HD games fit fine on a DVD9.

GoW is also short and consists largely of enclosed areas, not to mention the tricks they had to pull to get it to fit. It's getting harder and harder to manage with the limited space - larger disk sizes are inevitable, and the time for it is now.

Just to point out - PAL is 576i, as opposed to the 480i of NTSC. So if it's a true PAL conversion you're getting a higher res than US anyway.

Plus it is one of the most linear games i have played and all the levels have been cut off, sneaky stuff. It is a great game none the less, it does deserve praise but it wasnt the most compelling game i have played.

You can largeley see how god of war can differ from gears of war aswell. The whole level being in god of war being available to re tran through, the larger scale battles, all the other data. Its a pity about the no HD but i didnt expect it from a ps2 title either. If it was ps3 then let out your roars.

God of War 2 is PS2 rather than PS3. So this DVD9 not big enough is just silly, the PS2's hardware isn't parallel/powerful enough to decompress/stream/whatever all at the same time.
