Lara leaves Core

PS2 News | Eidos snatches Lara from Core due to Angel of Darkness' bad reception.
Another blow for Core this week.

After losing their Managing Director Jeremy Heath-Smith last week, the developer has now lost its biggest property, Lara Croft.

Eidos has taken the property away from Core, and handed it over to US Studio Crystal Dynamics (Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver), due to the lackluster reception Angel of Darkness has received from critics and players.

An official statement said On 15th July, the Company announced that Jeremy Heath-Smith was stepping down as its Development Director and as Managing Director of Core Design. Since then, the Board has been conducting a review of the Tomb Raider franchise and the studio operations of Core Design. In recognition of the Company’s need continually to enhance the value and maximise the commercial opportunity of one of its key franchises, for which all intellectual property rights belong to Eidos, the Board has concluded that it will transfer development of the franchise to its Crystal Dynamics studio in the US."

The next Tomb Raider game is scheduled for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2005.
