Last weekend, the second Tomb Raider flick, Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life opened across cinemas in the United States. However, it did not perform anywhere near expected, amassing an, ahem, measly $21.7 million dollars - over 50% lower than the opening weekend for the first film, and opening in fourth place.
Is this the fault of Paramount, the company behind the Tomb Raider films? Oh, no. The executives over at Paramount place the blame on the saturation of sequels this summer at the cinema, and the PS2 sequel to the series, Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness. The game has topped sales charts worldwide, but has only scored average to negative reviews.
