Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam coming to the PS2

PS2 News | Activision also expects premium price points to stay.
According to Gamespot, Activision CFO Thomas Tippl revealed in a conference call that Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam will be coming to the PlayStation 2 during the April - October 2007 period. The game made just over $9.0 million whilst the superior Tony Hawk's Project 8 bought in $43.9 million.

Activision Publishing president and CEO Mike Griffith also stated that Activision expects the premium pricing for games to hold, which is disappointing news for those who were hoping for cheaper price points for games. The company expects that during the calandar year the Xbox 360 will sell 5 million units, they also expect the PlayStation 2, Wii and PlayStation 3 to sell 4 million units each.

"The game made just over $9.0 million on the Wii whilst the superior Tony Hawk's Project 8 bought in $43.9 million" Hmmm...

Project 8 was released on five platforms with a total installed userbase of about 149 million (100M PS2, 15M PSP, 1.5M PS3, 8M 360, 24M Xbox). At around US$55 per copy (any sold on Next-gen machines would cots US$60, last gen $50, and I think PSP games are usually US$40), that's about 800,000 copies sold between five platforms, or 160,000 per platform on average (all rough figures, of course).

They specify the Wii version of Downhill Jam (so it doesn't count the DS version) which was released on one platform with an installed base of about 3 million by the end of 2006. AT US$50 per copy that means 180,000 copies were sold.

Sounds like the Wii version has done comparatively very well, even though (as mentioned in the article) it's clearly the inferior game, and probably had a much lower budget. No wonder they're bringing it to PS2.

Actually after doing more fact checking it appears to be for the DS & Wii versions, so about 90,000 copies sold each then...

Or 9.0 million divided by 2 platforms = 4.5 million (Wii DS)
44 million divided by 5 platforms = 8.8 million (360 etc.)

^^Still, given the potential user bases, development budgets, price of goods and quality of the end products, it seems Downhill Jam did very well for itself.

The game still sucks though. I want the 'real' Tony hawk games on Wii! I'm a skateboarder, and I actually don't like Tony Hawk that much, but I do like several of the other pros that appear in the games - Koston and Vallely and my favorite skaters. Yet they weren't in THDJ.

EDIT: Actually, I tried the current gen version of THP8 (on PS2) and it was actually pretty awful too. Looks like I'll just play THPS2 and 3 over and over until a next-gen price drop...

You're forgetting the insanely horrible looking GBA version of Downhill Jam too, if it even sold more than a dozen copies.

Amusing (if not hilarious) that Activision expects Wii to lose and PS3 to gain so much momentum that the two consoles have equal sales too.

I reckon they should put Project 8 for Wii

Oh please don't remind me about that game. It looks bloody awful, my friends and I thought it was a joke after seeing some footage from it.

Hopefully this game will be a bit better on the PS2. I will be interesting to compare the two control methods.

Like I said - price drop.

THDJ would have had its sales on the Wii influenced by the fact that there are barely any games for it.

i have project 8 on ps2 and dont mind it, but i am interested to know what the difference is between it and the 360/ps3 versions that makes reviews say that the ps2 version is so bad and the xbox 360 version so good?

I liked PS2 Project 8, it was pretty good, all I wanted from the Tony Hawk series was more skating and less of Bam's junk.
