Eidos on Lara's anniversary celebration

PS2 News | Not just a remake, promises developer.
Here's a mini-landmark of sorts that you may or may not know/care about: mid-November marks the tenth anniversary of the release of the very first Tomb Raider game. However, Eidos has revealed we'll be waiting a bit longer before we get our hands on Tomb Raider: Anniversary, the title inspired by Lara's very first adventure, and designed to celebrate the series' tenth birthday. The game is due on PS2, PSP and PC in 2007, and developer Crystal Dynamics has assured gamers that Anniversary is set to be a brand new Lara experience, and one that, "faithfully preserves the elements which made the original Tomb Raider such a classic".

Quoth Eidos' Kathryn Clements: "We are re-telling an incredible story using today’s technology, we’ve taken all of the key moments from the original game and put them into the context of a brand new Tomb Raider adventure which will make fans of the franchise extremely happy but also attract a completely new audience."

A sizeable promise for sure, but then Tomb Raider Legend undoubtedly reinvigorated the flagging franchise when released earlier this year. And Eidos boss Ian Livingstone is optimistic about what he's seen so far, claiming that Tomb Raider: Anniversary "pushes the boundaries of the current gaming consoles." We shall, as they say, see.

More on this as we get it, anyway; for now, hit the Media Panel for the solitary screenshot so far.

This makes me skeptical. What are they going to do? Release a bunch of fake 'nude codes' out onto the 'net so that once again thousands of horny teenagers can mash their controllers in a desperate attempt to see Lara in the buff? icon_razz.gif

I am a little disappointed by this. Up until now I was expecting this to be just like playing the original Tomb Raider, just with better controls and presentation. By the sounds of this, it is going to be for the most part a totally new game built around the story elements of the first game. Now do not get me wrong I am all for more lara, but if they are going that far to change so much.. how hard would it have been to just make a new story to go with it.

This sounds more like comparing the brilliant Boris Carlof movie "the Mummy" to that dire Brendan Fraser movie of the same name.

Oh well. It is more Lara. I know I will still get it. I am just not quite as excited about it as I was yesterday.
