Final Fantasy XII Preview

PS2 Preview | The journey has only just begun.
If you looked up anticipated in the dictionary, chances are (well, not really) you will find Final Fantasy XII in that definition. Not since FFX was released several years ago has there been a new, official Final Fantasy game. Some reviews are already in for the Japanese and US version of the game, and thus far the results have been overwhelmingly positive. However, this can also be said about FFX, which was actually criticised quite heavily by some jaded players. The true verdict will not surface until the mass consumer market gets its grubby hands on the final game, so before the 2007 PAL release, we can update some details and bring a comprehensive preview for Final Fantasy XII.

It all began with this single image.

As mentioned in a descriptive (yet dated) preview, FFXII brings the player back to the world of Ivalice, made famous from the Final Fantasy Tactics titles. The game will not feature any of the original stories or characters (purists can hope for cameos), but is a completely new adventure with locations never seen before. A world at war is no setting to be taken lightly, and the story features extreme conflicts with the Archadian Empire and Kingdom of Dalmasca. Not wanting to give too much away at this point, I would like to call attention to the stunning cast of characters who fill varying duties in the tumultuous political and military upheaval – Vaan, Ashe, Penelo, Balthier, Fran….just to name a few. Given the complexity of the story, each character will hopefully play a major role as opposed to being relegated to a back seat position for story filler.

When these characters have words and start to throw down, FFXII has done away with the traditional random, turn-based battle system. This seems tired and clunky to most newer gamers, despite traditional role-players trying to keep the dream alive anyone after a killer old-school experience can check out Dragon Quest VIII}. In the updated battle system, your party will roam an open environment and engage visible enemies – or avoid them entirely. The maps and videos seen so far give an impression of MMORPG style combat, which as we all know is getting more and more popular on a daily basis. Given a choice of characters, there is an option to control how the entire party will fight and aid allies. Essentially it allows any action to be performed on any enemy or ally, at any time. This is brand new to any Final Fantasy title, and it known as the Gambit system.

Wow. Just wow.

Wow. Just wow.
Close
Some games so far have utilised a similar system; notably Kingdom Hearts II and Tales of Symphonia. FFXII will give more control and specific commands, rather than vague options of what might happen in battle. The entire battle field is clear, which even provides rather cool targeting arcs that show which ally or enemy a character is performing an action on. As per usual in Final Fantasy, there will be Active or Wait options. Active will keep the battle flowing even as options and commands are being selected, so time is of the essence. Wait pauses the action to give the player time to make careful decisions about how to approach the situation. All in all, the new combat system looks extremely promising and it will be very refreshing to see such a radical system in a Final Fantasy title.

No RPG is complete without some form of leveling up, and FFXII gives yet another new take on the concept with the License Board. Somewhat similar to the Sphere Grid in FFX, players move around the board unlocking squares of a giant checkered board. Each square contains a license, essentially an upgrade which may include new magic, increased player statistics and extra abilities. Every time a square is unlocked, it then gives access to the surrounding squares and their inherent bonuses. This is shaping up to be a far less linear approach to leveling than the Sphere Grid, and will literally allow the player to develop and customise each character right down to the smallest detail.

Once again, Square are set to amaze the gaming community by providing stellar graphics – both in game and through rendered cutscenes. While we stand on the brink of the next generation some may find the technical prowess not as outstanding, but this game has been in development for many years, and it shows. You can check out many screens through the Media Panel, and FFXII is indeed looking to have among the best, if not the absolute best, graphics on the PS2 console. There really isn’t much else to say about this – it’s Final Fantasy. Always stunning.

FFXII features an original score, composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto and co-produced by series veteran and legend Nobuo Uematsu. Uematsu will also be contributing an original theme song, Kiss Me Goodbye, performed by rising star Angela Aki. It is a testament to this song, and Aki’s talent, that after hearing it I personally sought out more of Aki’s work, discovered and subsequently purchased her newest album direct from Japan. This is coming from a guy who spent hundreds of dollars on Final Fantasy music from a HMV store in Tokyo – but the point remains valid. As is to be expected, with the supreme talents of Uematsu and now Angela Aki at the helm, FFXII is going to be yet another amazing musical experience.

Final Fantasy XII is released on October 31st in the United States, and early 2007 for PAL regions. All impressions thus far are extremely positive, and PALGN will have all the specific details of the PAL release (and any bonus content) as soon as it is released. Watch this space for the full review of the most anticipated Final Fantasy game ever made. Now that is no small achievement.
Overall:
I am blown away by Final Fantasy XII, and I haven't even played it yet. Not to be completely blinded by dazzling displays, the final game must be played fully to pass final judgement. We at PALGN are just hoping it will be every bit as good as expected.

Spoiler free impressions:

Wasnt sure whether we could talk about review/import (jpn) copies on here. However, as a Final Fantasy fan since VI (still have it in mint condition) I can safely say that this is my personal fave since VI. I have clocked up 84hours on it, and I simply adore the game. I also beleive I am about maybe 60% through what the game has to offer.

As far as how you play goes what I love is that you can play it how you please. You can use gambits to set up your strategies and walk around and let your strategic planning do the work or you can play with active or wait modes so you can make it as action packed and hard as you like, or as cruisy and strategic as you like. The game just flows beautifully with at least 80% of your time spent exploring the vast landscapes neve rlosing track of where you are or what you are doing. I have even DIED at least 30-40 times, this barely happened in previous iterations of the series.

The characters are all interesting and deadly deeply serious, theres no teen angst and theres a steady repoire and respect that grows between the characters. As far as effeminate characters go, I dont see the problem, the characters all look great and show emotion and miniscule details as the story progresses. They suit the style of the gameworld and are always a treat to look at. If you dont like this style of art or cant seperate your phobias from the gorgeous art style maybe play Oblivion instead. The game OOZES character and style, in widescreen looks simply stunning.

On another techincal note, the game is also in DPLII and sounds amazing for those who have this setup. The music is epic and the battle tune is used to great effect (you'll see).

Another thing I love is that there are no sport games, mini games and irrelevant things to do so far (such as dodging lightning bolts, or sports) its all about adventure, battles and strategy. The hunting quests are a major part of the game and will have you hunting the regions of Ivalice for over 100hours if your keen to nail them all. For those that loved the ' minigames' in FFX you will miss them, but they are replaced with more actual playing/battling/exploring and less mandatory stuff that you have to do to get all weapons etc (so far).

I would say when you get this its gonna take about 4-5 hours until you get the swing of things (and watch the gorgeous 18 minute opening movie and accompanying in game engine cut scenes... which are also amazing). Prepare to have at least 2 hour sessions and a 5+ hour opening session, theres a lot to think about with the licence system and your characters gambits and equipment/techniques/magic/augments.

I certainly will be buying the limited edition release come 31/10 and will try and snag as much merch as I can. So far an unforgettable experience that has brought gameplay and style back to the final fantasy series in style.

# for reference my order of FF games is as follows from best to least fave: FFVI/FFVII/FFIX/FFX/FFV/FFX-2/FFIV/FFIII/FFII/FFI I would imagine this one may end up near the top, Ill see when Im done.

^ At least he's played more than VII, X and XI icon_razz.gif An opinion that actually means something.

The only real concern I have for the game is the combat. I'm a massive turn-based combat fan, and not really huge on this action based crap (Kingdom Hearts for example). Every action RPG I've played the combat has always been terrible - dull, mindless button bashing. I've tried to avoid as much gameplay footage as possible for this game though, but I've heard the combat is sort of similar to Final Fantasy XI.

See how it goes though. In all honestly, I'm anticipating the release of Final Fantasy V&VI(GBA) and Final Fantasy III (DS) more than this. I guess it's mainly because of the combat that has me worried. But everything else from character depth, town interaction and lifestle to environment and character detail look absolutely superb.

Dragon Quest isn't a Square franchise, they've only been associated with one of the games (even then it is likely that the Enix part of Square Enix had most of the say). And really he's right, Square don't have much other than Final Fantasy going for them at the moment, while Kingdom Hearts is a great game I'l admit, iterations aren't exactly getting pumped out to the same frequency as FF.
It's a pretty slow frequency though, how long has it been since FFX-2 was released?

ManeKast: You make the game sound pretty good, I'll certainly be getting it at launch (the U.S one, that is), that's been my plan all along. icon_smile.gif There's no way I could miss it, being such a big FF fan!

Here's a pic of my FFX-2 Yuna statue, on topic:

Like I said, it's more like KOTOR and KOTORII with active time bars (I'm not sure if this is how FFXI operates), and the gambit system eliminates most of the button mashing. You only ever have to enter the menus when you want to perform a certain action (cast a spell, use an item) or order another party member to do so.

Admeister, I wasn't aware someone needed a grounding in Final Fantasy for their opinion to hold any weight. I played FFX at face value, and it was a good game, but with a few glaring flaws. At face value, FFXII is a much better game from what I've played played in contrast. Who's to say I can't say this simply because you think differently and this somehow hurts your feelings?

What I'm trying to say, is that it doesn't matter how much you love Tidus, I still think he's a wanker. icon_razz.gif

Well duh, I figured that hence, once more my comment that Tidus is unpopular. I'm just saying that to make the kinds of comment you did, you should have a better understanding of the series. But I guess you're not a fan, so it's harder for you to ignore the flaws of FFX and really like it, as I do. That's OK. I guess we're always going tohave conflicting views, I for one thought the scripting was very good in FFX, but I'll admit that some of the cutscenes aren't so great. Please keep in mind that it was an early title, it's been quite a while since it was released, imagine what it would have been like if it had been released now! Anyway, improvement is to be expected over time, so I'm glad FFXII is fixing some problems, it's just that not everybody agrees on what they think is a problem, and so in labelling them as such, people who thought they were no such thing will get annoyed.

I'm not against people posting reviews/their thoughts about games, I like to do so myself (obviously), but I guess I'm just trying to say that people should just be careful about what they say about a game, I know I try to be.

^ I'm not so sure the voice acting would have improved over time... Someone's opinion of a game is just fine, too, you can't fault someone for not liking a game, especially if you want them to play other games they probably won't like either, or the other way around!

Anyway, my other point is that it's hard to group FF games as one entity and say that one fixed something in another one, as the only links are vague themes, names, and being in the jRPG genre. Most were produced by the same people, but even that's not true any more.
I think 12 will be different in many ways now that the Vagrant Story people are in charge, so don't be surprised if it's pretty different! Different in a good way I'm guessing, VS was a top game icon_smile.gif

oh, and the gambit system is made for programmers, so that already wins with me XD

Sorry to double post, but this comment also annoyed me quite a bit:

Umbrella CEO: "Yeah true, but the game still is a cradle for most games, the franchise itself is very strong, probably the only good one square have."

That is so unfair, how about Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts and Grandia? You can't just going around saying things like that! icon_sad.gif
Sorry what I ment was, out of all the Final Fantasy's (just final fantasy), the biggest franchise is the VII. No other series including FFX has emulated that sucess, that sucks for square since I think they shouldnt just live one franchise like that, make another one good as that. So far nothing has topped even the other series, which I'm not a fan of some of these series I didnt like grandia II, havent played dragon quest and I did like kingdom hearts. By the way I did like FFVIII,thought it was great.

Why? Do you honestly get offended if I speak negatively of a game you like? If I was speaking negatively about for example, your ill grandmother, I could understand how I may need to choose my words carefully, but a videogame?

Admeister: We sometimes get pissed off with your complete nintendo bias. But we accept it, cos it's called an opinion. Accept the fact that not everyone likes FFX and people are allowed to post their thoughts on it.
I for one enjoyed it thoroughly. What I didn't enjoy was Tidus and his whiney voice.

Alright, I understand. Other people make these sorts of comments too (when I say something people don't like, I usually hear about it), but I'll try and be more accepting of what people say.

I finally got a copy of the game, I didnt enjoy that much (the 2 hours I played) I felt the narration idea was horrible, the voice acting gets annoying but I dont think its Voice actors fault but the dialogue gets weird in places. Setting seems heavly influeced by lord of the rings and star wars and story is slow in places. Battle system is good but generally running away and when the bar is full hitting the monster. That said it isnt bad game, except I keep getting lost, where the hell jinn? he's not anywhere.
It's a bit rich to say the story is slow in places given you've played 2 hours so far. icon_razz.gif

The narration only occurs for the prologue, and for about 10 minutes just to set the story. Pretty bog-standard, really. True, in one FMV scene they seemed to rip off Star Wars AND Lord of the Rings, but I think the dialogue is improved rather than have it stuffed with silly american colloquialisms.

You'll also find that running away won't always work, as you'll get hit regardless if the enemy is quick enough.

As for Jinn, he's like, a screen south and a screen east of where you start. From memory, his position isn't randomised.

Thats true, the beginning for me has to be good, it has set the tone for the game. I get the country is war and all, but it doesnt tell you much about what sense of perspective the main charcter wants to do, unlike FFX. Then again I havent played much, so maybe I'm getting ahead. One thing I hated you have shakepearn dialogue of some character, while vaan plays some cheesey american teen. I still dont think of it as Final Fantasy, its very different for some reason.

Yeah it doesnt always work, but if you sometimes get it right you get the block thing to work and plus it helps ease off multiple enimies.

So you dont leave the village, cause I thought you have to go out, I found black stone nothing there and went on till the bridge and gave up.
