Canis Canem Edit - Errands

PS2 Feature | Bringing home the cash.
This is the penultimate article in our Canis Canem Edit cover story. Today we take a look at performing errands to earn money in Canis Canem Edit.

Jimmy Hopkins has a whole year at Bullworth Academy ahead of him. Of course, it would be unreasonable (and unrealistic) to expect him to do nothing but school work. As the story unfolds we’ll see Jimmy struggle his way through over 75 tasks for various characters at the Academy and in the surrounding town. He’s also supposed to attend a number of classes and will no doubt have to complete a few punishments along the way. The map is also full of mini-games to get involved with, places to explore, items to collect and people to interact with. It looks like Jimmy will be pretty busy then. But just in case Jimmy ever finds a spare minute in his daily timetable, there will be a steady stream of people who need errands done.

Of course, Jimmy is not a charity worker. When you have an upbringing like Jimmy’s, when your mother’s parenting skills are not exactly perfect, you’re quite likely to develop a “fend for yourself – survival of the fittest” mentality. Young Mr. Hopkins has cultivated a keen eye for opportunity and quite a head for business. While it’s tempting to keep his head down, obey the rules and get on with work – it’s a lot more interesting and profitable to take advantage of some of the opportunities that are in offer. There is money to be made over the course of the school year.

The $50 that Jimmy’s mother gives him as she abandons him at the school gates will not last the whole year. Not when Jimmy needs to buy sodas, stink bombs, itching powder, even some new clothes and parts for his BMX. Throughout the day and evenings, Jimmy will be approached by various fellow students and adults who will ask him to complete errands for them. It’s not that Jimmy wants to take advantage of other people and profit from their misfortune, it is more about providing a valuable service to the community.

When a little girl named Karen comes up to Jimmy one evening with an idea, he instantly spots a potential to earn some fast cash. The girls’ dorm has been egged a few times recently and Karen is convinced that the boys are responsible. She asks Jimmy to return the favor by egging the boys’ dorm – who could resist a sweet little girl’s request, especially when there’s $10 in it and the chance to have some fun making a mess of the school.

It’s not just Jimmy’s fellow students who need help, many adults around Bullworth Town will also approach Jimmy for assistance. Mr. Martin runs a seafood restaurant in Old Bullworth Vale, and his customers seem very keen on crab at this time of year. In fact, he’s almost run out and needs somebody to dive into the local estuary and find some more for him. Jimmy is an accomplished swimmer and $20 is too much to ignore.

It’s not all self-serving capitalism either. Jimmy will sometimes even be asked to help out the community and play the hero. One day, when Jimmy’s out and about looking for kicks in Bullworth Town, Officer Morrison, the local policeman approaches him. It seems that an abandoned tenement building has caught fire and Officer Morrison is struggling to get on top of the blaze by himself. Does Jimmy feel like saving the day? For $25, he’s more then likely to have a go.
