Sony unveils the PSX

PS2 News | It's not exactly what you think, either.
Reuters are reporting that Sony are intending to launch a new product which will go under the name of "PSX". According to Sony, the "PSX" promises to integrate games, pictures and music using advanced semiconductor technology, combining real-time game operating systems and fast DVD/hard-disk recorders.

This announcement comes just days after the unveiling of the PSP (Playstation Pocket) at the E3 exhibition in Los Angeles. In a statement to the press, Sony said the PSP and PSX "will mark the beginning of a new series of products that will unite the most advanced electronics devices with the leading-edge semiconductor technology associated with the game sector."

Could it be that this "PSX" is a sleeker model of the PS2, with added DVD+RW and a 120GB hard disk? Pictures (in the media section) seem to point at this possibility, but we are currently in the dark.

The word going down the grapevine is that this new product will launch in Japan this year, and in western markets in 2004.

PALGN will have more news on the "PSX" as it breaks.

sony, being a huge media conglomerate, is seeking market dominance and the PSX and the PSP are just new products for us to buy so that we have a Sony home. All that I can say is that this is the PS2 with some other crap mixid in with it to make the thing look new. They've even made the layout and colour different so that you think its a different console! I'm just gonna wait for the PS3 and be done with it. What does the X stand for anyway!?!

Well said my man.

What an unoriginal name! Everyone has been calling the PlayStation the PSX forever.

It's becoming increasingly obvious that Nintendo need to call their next console NESX, X seems to make consoles sell better.

You guys are taking the way. From where I stand, this thing looks like a DVD burner/recorder, with the PS2 capability an afterthought. As for the PSX name - why not? It's better than DVD-RW 924342X. It will cost, I would imagine, into the thousands, so it's hardly a competitor to the current console market.

icon_lol_old.gif I agree with that.

I actually like the console/device. Very sleek. I'm sure I won't like the price though. icon_confused.gif
