Singstar Anthems Preview

PS2 Preview | Not national anthems, thankfully.
Some of the PlayStation 2's immense success has to be attributed to the more, shall we say, mainstream games on the system. Sure, there are the likes of Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy and Tekken, but for casual gamers the core appeal of the PlayStation 2 lines in the Singstar, Eyetoy and Buzz games. Singstar in particular has become extremely popular in the past two years, with each expansion rocketing straight to the top of the charts. We're sure Singstar Anthems is going to be just as popular, so we thought we'd take a closer look at it.

Every Singstar game has had a theme and this time it is Anthems. We're not entirely sure why these titles are actually considered anthems but there will be twenty all new songs, bringing the total number of Singstar songs up to 170, which is an impressive feat. However, if you're an avid fan of Singstar then you're likely to realise that this game only contains twenty songs, rather than the usual thirty songs which has been a precedent ever since the first game. This is a real disappointment, as the songs can quickly becomes stale in the Singstar games and twenty songs just doesn't feel like enough music, especially considering the game is retailing for the same price as the rest of the other expansions. It makes the game feel a little bit like an overpriced CD.

I wouldn't mind it...

It has only been a few months since Singstar Rocks! was released and considering the bew game is only a few weeks away this means there has only been about three months between this game and Rocks. Just about every version of Singstar has been localised for the various regional markets but it looks like the UK and Australia will be getting the same tracklist.

There are some other differences with Singstar Anthems as well. In terms of additions, Singstar Anthems should be very similar to it's predecessors. The game will contain a team contest option as well as head to head sing offs. The Singstar microphones will come bundled with the game for the price of a normal game and these microphones give your singing a score based on pitch, tone and rhythm. Being the sixth Singstar title we were hoping that by now we'd have a fully fledged single player mode or any additions but unfortunately it seems like we'll have to wait for Singstar, uh, <insert genre, year of music or equivalent here>.

The Singstar games live and die by there tracklist, so the following twenty songs are what will be included in the package. This appears to be the final tracklist as well.
  • Queen - Radio Ga Ga

  • Bonnie Tyler - [i]Total Eclipse of the Heart

  • Take That feat. Lulu - Relight My Fire

  • Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time

  • Steps - Deeper Shade of Blue

  • Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)

  • Candi Station - [i]Young Hearts Run Free

  • Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive

  • Bananarama - I Heard A Rumour

  • Pussycat Dolls - Don’t Cha

  • Leann Rimes - Can’t Fight the Moonlight

  • Donner Summer - I Feel Love

  • Bucks Fizz - Making Your Mind Up

  • The Weather Girls - It’s Raining Men

  • Ultra Nate - Free

  • Scissor Sisters - Laura

  • Kim Wilde - Kids in America

  • Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody

  • Girl Aloud - Biology

  • Charlotte Church - Crazy Chick

Apparently, the op shop had frilly white shirts on the cheap.

The only song that we'd question is Charlotte's Churches Crazy Chick, not because she isn't one (because we all know she is) but because it's not particularly a memorable song and it certainly isn't a classic like Kim Wilde's Kids in America. For the most part the song list looks rather impressive, despite the fact that it is a little shorter, though some songs feel like they'd be better to sing than they actually are.

Singstar Anthems will be available in Australia on July the 27th and in the UK on August the 4th. It's not going to be a revolution, but we all know it's going to be in the charts until the next title, which is probably going to be out before the end of the year at this rate.
Overall:
It's not going to be anything different, but if you love the Singstar franchise then this will more than satisfy your needs for the next three months.

Yeah 20 songs seems a bit of a rip off.

Funny how the popular Singstar range hasn't made it Platinum ... hmmmmm
