PlayStation 2 price drop confirmed for Australia

PS2 News | How much cheaper can it get?
Sony has just confirmed that the recommended retail price of the PlayStation 2 will be dropped to $199.95 effective from Thursday 1 June. For the ten or so people who haven't picked one up yet, this is the best chance yet and it makes the PlayStation 2 even more value for money.

Those who like to read into things will probably realise this is the same day the Nintendo DS Lite is released in Australia, also for the RRP of $199.95. But it's mere a coincidence, isn't it?

I noticed this when browsing through catalogues today.

Its getting pretty tempting.

Could finally be time to replace my dead PS2, then I'll be able to finish ICO and start SotC. Woohoo!

Tempting, but not tempting enough.

No thanks. Still too much for such an old piece of hardware.

I might buy a gamecube instead with some games icon_razz.gif Oh way, I'll just save the money and wait for the wii.
Don't think it's in quite the same market, shouldn't effect the DSL much.

Still waiting for $100.

Save that $200 and put it towards the monster $1000 and then you can play all your favourite PS2 titles on the PS3 icon_smile.gif

You'll save yourself $50 on a memory card icon_biggrin.gif

I wonder how long untill we see a Xbox markdown, surely if the rumours
are true and MS have 100,000 consoles sitting at a distributor then surely
the will have to follow suit or possibly go for $149 just to ship the remaining
stock as the sales have nearly stalled completly for it.

Thoughts anyone?

A price drop just two months after picking up the console due to a special Electronics Boutique deal. Sure, it was a bargin at the time and possibly, it still is.

Hopefully that means we'll be able to pick up the PS2 for $149 in sales soon. Now that it doesn't look like I'll get a PS3... I might be tempted to get a PS2. I've still got a PAL copy of Rez sitting in my draw and Ico and SotC are beconning.

I wouldn't have anything to play if it weren't for my PS2... The GameCube's release list is emptier than the Peter Costello fanclub headquarters, and I sold my Xbox when it became obvious that all future support would be for the 360.

After finishing Shadow of the Colossus, I'm about 3/4 of the way through Leon's mission on RE4 (I beat the GCN version, but wanted to check out the Separate Ways storyline). And then once I get through THAT, I picked up the Silent Hill Collection last week, which is another 3 games of horror and death to wade through. God of War's still begging to be played...

I've owned all 3 systems, and they all have great games, as well as strengths and weaknesses in certain areas... But for sheer value for money, range and discount offers, you can't beat the PS2.

Even though I still hate the controller, and will til the day I die.

However things turn out, I'm not planning on diving into the next generation anytime soon. I've always been an early adopter in every previous generation, and I've always picked the console that ended up with the worst support. I've decided it's probably better to play the waiting game (even though it sucks compared to Hungry Hungry Hippos), and see how the game line-up and price shape up over the course of the first 18 months.

There's too much money to be lost by betting on the wrong horse, especially this early in the race.

ICO, SotC, SC3 and DMC are really looking at me from the internet with large interest, although I hate the PS2 controller.

Maybe I could hold out until the PS3 drops to $400 but that's going to be a long time, I guess I'll have better luck picking up a PS2 for $100.

Ooo.. DS Lite or PS2? I've got a DS already soo...

And with the price drop of Guitar Hero to $129.95, that makes a very tempting bundle for the guitar-head who hasn't really got into games.

The PS2 still has many years life left in it. Maybe not for cutting edge games but you only have to look at the sales charts to see singstar and buzz are at the top regually. Sony only just recently stopped producing the PS1.

Picked up a PS2 bundle pack at Xmas from Big W for $249.

Included a 2nd controller, memory card, R&C 3 and the venerable GT3.

$199 doesn't seem overly great to me.

Man I can't believe why some of you people haven't played such blockbuster games?! Like Shadow of Colossus and God of War sitting around unplayed?! Seriously these are some of my favourite games! Play them NOW NOW NOW!!!! Seriously...buy a ps2 if you don't have one....you gotta experience those 2 games.....nothing short of epic!

Me on the other hand....after finishing Onimusha: Dawn of War the only other games I need to buy for the Ps2 are God of War II (when it's released) and the Street Fighter Alpha Anthology (when that is released aswell).

EDIT: oOpSie.....forgot one of the most important ones.....Okami.

yeah I've got a number of unfinshed games to get through myself ... probably enough to see me through until the PS3 is under $500 icon_biggrin.gif

Just restarted Gitaroo Man icon_smile.gif

Edit: still need to get GOW 1&2, MGS3, Guitar Hero 2 and Okami

Hmm looking forward to some sweet PS2 bundles during EB's inevitable June clearance sales.

But I want a DS Lite also. Impossible choice.

Lack of time, man, lack of time. My interest in games hasn't waned, but the time I get to play them sure has. In between work and letting my 3-year-old son commandeer my systems to play Mario and Sonic, I only get about an hour or two to play these days, usually around midnight, when I'm getting too tired to sit down for a 3-hour gaming session.

Especially with Resident Evil 4 and Silent Hill... My son loved watching me play through Shadow of the Colossus, but there's no way in Hell I'd let him watch me play any of the games in those two series...

I used to have nightmares about the ridiculously fake rubber-alien-costume-wearing extras on Doctor Who, so I'd hate to see what seeing Leon's head carved off by a chainsaw would do to a kid. icon_sad.gif

In an age where children as young as 5 have mobile phones, drop the f-bomb more often than a drunken Irishman and gossip about who's having sex with who? Not much I'm afraid. icon_sad.gif

Ok, that's quite a generalization, but we all know that the world you grew up is a quite different to the one kids today are exposed to.

But if I were in your position, I'd do the same thing.

In regards to a people not yet owning a PS2, like others have said before me, some of this generation greatest games have been on that very platform. Do yourself a favour and pick on up.

^ I totally agree with Lahiru but it's because of parents like Nev that we can be thankful that not every kid is like that.

My two biggest fears as a kid was the Alien from Alien/s and the clown from I.T. I honestly had about a week of sleepless nights cuz of that stupid clown!

I admit i've been really strapped for time aswell cuz a mate and I have been working on movies/scripts.....but I actually planned ahead & took time off work for Resident Evil 4 and Shadow of Colossus.

Heh, word to that clown........that frickin clown.

The only future game I'm planning on buying for my PS2 is in fact Lego Star Wars II. and that is only because I have the first one on it and it has been said by the developers those who have data from the first game on their mem. card can unlock stuff.

If it wasn't for this "stuff" I'd get the GCN version like I would have bought the GCN version of the first one if it had been released along side each other, or if the announcement was made a "good" date.
