Another Street Fighter collection on the way

PS2 News | Round two.
After the success of the rather excellent Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, Capcom have decided to pump out another collection of past versions of their classic beat 'em up series. Titled Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, this collection will obviously focus on the Alpha sub-series. Featured games include Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold and Street Fighter Alpha 3. If that wasn't enough, the mega-cute Pocket Fighter, also known as Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix, will also come stuffed onto the disc.

It's certainly a collection stuffed full with goodies, and something any Street Fighter fan will find intriging. Sadly, it's only scheduled for a PS2 release at this point in time, though. The game looks set for a North American release in the third quarter of 2006, with no word of a PAL conversion as of yet, but after the critical success of the first collection, it's hard to see us missing out. We'll have more as we get it.

Just a little quibble, Pocket fighter doesn't have any real puzzle elements, unless this is puzzle fighter, which would be a great dissapointment. Pocket fighter rules! I'm glad it's on PS2, I can use my stick with it that way.

Edit: after actually looking at the screenshots like a sensible person I see it's pocket fighter

The PS2 version of anniversary collection wasn't released in PAL at all. And the only version that was released, the Xbox, didn't sell very well either.

It sorta does, and it is a direct sequel to Puzzle Fighter, with the gems returning. I fixed the article anyway, since it did sound like Puzzle Fighter, which is a much better game then Pocket Fighter.

Anywhoo...

The last CPS2 collection, the Vampire one (japan only), was far worse then the equivalent Sega Saturn ports of Vampire Hunter and Saviour. Since those games ran on the same original boards as the Alpha series, they'll probably stuff this up too.

What they'll most likley do is simply port the inferior PS1 versions of the Alpha games and Pocket Fighter to PS2, like they did with the Capcom Generations series to Capcom Classics - Classics actually has the exact same sound effect and load time problems as the PS1 versions of Generations, showing that that's exactly what they did.

Like all Alpha fans, I've got the lot on Saturn anyway (including Zero 3 and Pocket Fighter), so I won't be buying this.
