V8 Supercars 3 Preview

PS2 Preview | Start your engines... again.
The first V8 Supercar title was released in 2002, and it didn't take long for Codemasters to release its sequel in 2004 on the XBox and Playstation 2. A PSP version filtered out a short while later, so it doesn't take a genius to realise that Codemasters is onto a winner with this franchise. Obviously not content to rest on their laurels they are bringing V8 Supercar Race Driver 3 (or Toca Race Driver 3 for the English) to the Xbox and Playstation 2 early next year. We've taken a comprehensive look at the game and can't help but feel excited about the game's potential.

The main mode of this title will be the Pro Career mode. Rather than race in a large variety of racing disciplines, the game will allow players to select a specialist skill, such as GT, Offroad, Touring Cars, Historic and Oval. The game will then take the player through the specialist career. Those who want to race high powered vehicles immediately can play in the World Tour mode.

One of the flagship features of the series is the highly advanced damage model. The game's predecessor featured a terminal damage model, and Codemasters are promising that their new damage model with have 100 times the level of damage. Whilst this is likely to just be marketing talk, we are likely to see better particle effects and more realistic damage effects. Thus, We should see effects like windscreens shatter, wings get ripped off and spoilers breaking off and flying from the car. There will also be incremental damage occuring from tyres which will become worn and suffer from the track temperature, Codemasters are aiming for an unprecedented level of detail with the car damage. a hud will appear on the screen to keep players informed on how their vehicle is going. The AI will be affected by the same issues as the player, which should make the races seem a little more realistic.

Those who like to tune and upgrade their car will find plenty to love in this game. Every race team will be assigned a budget to spend on car tuning, through the course of a race season. In total there are going to be twenty seven upgradeable parts for each car and all of the parts are real tuning parts from companies such as Bridgestone and Motorsport. Some of the parts that can be modified will include the roll cage, engine struts, suspension, tyres and brake pads.

Online support will also be included for both the Playstation and the Xbox. Codemasters haven't revealed too much on what we can expect to see from the online mode, but we expect the usual race options will be available, hopefully it will be possible to select a multiplayer specialist discipline and go through a tournament with those vehicles.

Visually we're promised the game will include more of everything. The car detail has been increased, and the environments have recieved a large upgrade, with rumble strips and road surfaces enhanced severely. There haven't been too many images revealed yet but the game already looks great. The game will also include motion blur to give a faster speed effect and we're promised the frame-rate won't drop below sixty frames per second, even with twenty one cars on screen.

All in all there are going to be over seventy cars and forty tracks, and unlike the game's predecessor there will be no restrictions on where the cars can race this time around. It will be possible to take that V8 Holden out onto the Nurburgring track, the prospect of this leaves us very excited.

V8 Supercar Race Driver 3 is sounding like it is going to deliver more of everything, there is a lot more freedom in the title this time around which should ensure the game is even better than the previous titles.
Overall:
V8 Supercar Race Driver 3 looks like it will build upon the success of its predecessors, this is definitely a game to keep your eye on.

Mmm, I like the sound of that very much so. It would be really nice to give some of these tracks a proper testing with a real car for once. icon_wink.gif Bias aside, I am really looking forward to this game. I like the idea of having a more championship specific career mode and I can't wait to explore that aspect of the game with the Nismo 'touch'. Bring it on, seriously. No really, I want it. Now.
