Sonic Riders announced

PS2 News | ...This is different.
Sonic fans, rejoice! Sega has today announced that Sonic Riders will be out by the end of the year for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube.

Evidently not learning from their mistakes, the game appears to put Sonic and crew on hoverboards as they skate around Green Hill Zone and other familiar Sonic locales. Sonic fans, perhaps you should rejoice a bit on the quiet side, eh?

The first images can be found in the Media Panel. Maybe Shadow the Hedgehog wasn't looking so bad after all.

There is a tiny, tiny chance it won't suck and will play like unirally crossed with the good 3D levels of sonic adventure.

Yeah, I'm only kidding myself. Do Sonic Team ever, ever listen to the complaints of what they are doing to sonic?

Or perhaps this is penance for us getting Sonic Rush? You know, if we are getting a good sonic game, we have to get a bad one?

Yeah & I can only see little kids that likes sonic would buy it.

It doeasn't look as thought Amusement Vision wiped the template clean after F-Zero GX if you ask me.

Hover boards? Seriously?!

Kirby can get away with this kind of thing, but Sonic can run, fast. Why would he need a hover board when he could most probably run faster than what will most likely be in the game.

It would be great if this turned out to be Unirally in 3d, but somehow I doubt this very much.

I'm gonna buy this game like I did Kirby's and Mario's Cube racers. Oh wait, I didn't.

Mm. This is not how Sonic should be treated.
Still, Sonic Rush is coming, so I'll forgive them for this slip-up. icon_razz.gif

To date Sonic in 3D has prove to be a sucky concept and the reason is the levels are all designed like race courses. Perhaps Sonic Team need to make this kind of game to get it out of their system - and there's no reason why it can't be a compedent racer (race courses designed as race courses), albiet with a forced hedgehog motif (and agreed: Sonic has always looked cooler on foot). If Sonic platformers can take a new direction in light of this game (levels designed as levels - something expansive in all directions?) then I'm all for it.

Well, Sonic has always been about speed - and in most cases, getting to the end as quickly and stylishly as possible, without losing your rings - so making it too expansive would be a distraction.

They did have alternate routes in the Genesis games though...

Looks much better in motion, and it looks a lot similar to the likes of SSX and F-Zero combined. Looks interesting regardless, as does Shadow the Hedgehog

Like most hedgehog fans I have my own ideas about what is missing from the current generation of SONIC and what could be done to fix it. While an expansive world would distract from getting from beginning to end of a zone, figuring the quickest route from points A to B to C etc where the variables represent various locales in an expansive world may not. Think about Crazy Taxi or GTA where plotting a refined course is not only a matter of speed, but a matter of urgency.

This notion is based on my dissatisfaction with current generation SONIC and continually flying off of elongated (read: racetrack) style levels only to find no footing. This is okay for a racer like F Zero (and probably SONIC Riders) but I hope it Changes with SONIC rush.
