Metal Slug 4 Preview

PS2 Preview | Any chance of a new Metal Slug game anytime soon, SNK?
The Metal Slug series has established itself as some of the more popular Neo Geo games, thanks to some hectic shooting action and rather warped sense of humour. Metal Slug 4 is often considered to be one of the weaker entries in the series – but, even so, the game still offers a highly entertaining experience.

Bombs away.

For those who have, somehow, never come across an arcade machine of Metal Slug, expect a fast-paced 2D side scrolling shooter, in the vain of Probotector (or Contra, depending on where you’re from). You come equipped with a weedy pistol and grenades, and it’s your job to wipe out hordes of enemy soldiers – who bare more than a slight resemblance to Nazis. As you progress and save hostages – by walking into them, no less – you are often granted a weapons upgrade. Machine guns, rocket launchers, double machine guns – they’re all here, and bring a whole lot of fun to the game. And you will need these improvements if you expect to survive against the various armoured vehicles that come your way. One hit, and you’re toast.

That’s basically all there is to Metal Slug – kill everything at sight, walk to scroll the screen, kill everything in sight again, pick up a power up, and repeat ‘til the boss battle. Which are, for the most part, utterly terrifying. Not only do they take up most of the screen themselves – they fill the rest of it with various things that will kill you, making dodging a tricky prospect. However, when you do manage to somehow avoid the bombardment with some spectacular aerobatics, the sense of accomplishment is overwhelming.

A giant robot. How original.

For an old arcade game, the visuals look fantastic. There are no polygons in sight – this is an all-sprite affair. And, to be honest, we wouldn’t want it any other way. Each character has their own unique mannerisms – a lot like the enemies really, who have some spectacular animations, which are quite amusing. The arcade charm has been well retained.

Sounds great, right? Well, it is. For about half an hour. Our preview build seemed more like a finished game, which had the same few levels as the arcade machine. These levels do not take long to complete – combine that with an unlimited continue system, and the game is an absolute cakewalk that will be done and dusted within thirty minutes to an hour. The game is fun, but that’s just not long enough. You’ll probably play it through once, and then come back for the occasional blast every few months – unless you want a really high score.

Apparently, the concept of DVD has been lost on SNK/QVS/Sony etc. Decade old arcade games ported to the PS2 DO NOT cut it. Some extra levels, unlockables or whatever are simply ESSENTIAL for any sort of lifespan. Heck, a collection that had the entire [iMetal Slug[/i] series on one DVD would be an essential purchase. Or, even better, they could be ported to the PSP or DS, where short, sharp games are often the order of the day. In the UK and US, Metal Slug 4 and Metal Slug 5 are being bundled and sold as one game. In Australia however, QVSoftware seem to be selling them separately. Absolutely criminal.

The look on that soldier’s face when she turns around and stabs him will be amusing.

Even at a budget price point – assuming the game gets it, as there is no way full price could be charged for an ancient, thirty minute arcade game – we can only recommend this game to dedicated fans of the series.
Overall:
The game is great fun, but, ultimately, too short. Unless SNK plan include a whole lot of extras in the final version that weren't on our preview disc, this is one game best left alone.

A giant robot-how original caption....

Do note that the player, through the course of the level, has been transformed into a zombie and is attacking the giant robot by spewing blood upon it.

How original indeed lol

I downloaded 3, 4 and for Xbox and I really understand where the 1.5 came from. Five to six missions really isnt enough for a game like this, especially considering the graphics are hardly spetacular..

I think you guys have your information a tad wrong.
America are getting Metal Slug 4 and 5 bundled together. But the UK and the rest of Europe along with Australia are getting both titles seperatly.
It's how it has to be, blame Sony Europe for this. I emailed Ignition about why they were seperate and the reply was basically because Sony Europe told them thats how it has to be.
America on the other hand don't really like supporting 2D games unless theres lots of extras which Metal Slug 4 and 5 don't have. Thus they can only be released as a bundle.
Don't go blaming SNK for any of this. It's all in Ignitions and Sony's court when it's PAL regions.
I for one am very glad all these SNK games are getting released. I have bought every SNK game released on PS2 so far and will continue to do so.

Same here bro! There guys have no respec for the classics!

They're specialist games, not mainstream. So it's fair eneough for Brendon to warn people not to buy them - 'Need for Speed Boy' WOULD be dissapointed with them. Those like you and me will buy them anyway, as long as they're good ports, of course.

Oh, but Brendon, for a new Metal Slug game:

It would be easy for the publisher to put the prices of each title down to $29.95, so it was "like" a seperate game, so really releasing it as a full priced title is a bit rich.

Hey David, you think you can spell my name right, please? icon_smile.gif

Also, adjusted article accordingly. Thanks. We got no information on this game, unfortunately - just the CD.

Oops - sorry. Brendan. I have another mate called Brandon, and I've writen it so many times that it just slips off the keyboard for me. I fixed one vowel, but not the other, doh! Your name is hard too see under the VIP colours, too (in my defence).

It won't happen again (grovel grovel.......)

Sorry, I wasn't dissing the article though! It is true that it's a rip-off for most people. Only Neo Geo fans see it as a saving of $400 (since that's what the game would cost on a Neo cart!).

You know i STILL like metal slugs graphics.I can understand why the 'mainstream' may see them as outdated nowadays but few games(2d at least) can match its frame/animation count and fluidity.

While i liked a bit of a bash of virtua cop or what have you at the arcades in the day, metal slug was always the money muncher.I seemed to be the only one into it and the fact it was the only machine in the arcade that took 'silver' was all the more tempting.

But, lowering my rose-tinted glasses for a moment, i agree that they certainly arent worth full price, as a console game anyway. Its extremely difficult to port most arcade games to a home console where the 'just one more try' philosphy isnt limited by your small change. To be sold as fully flegded games they do need to be packaged as a 'anniversary/etc' collection.......much like how megaman for the gc was done.

I know myself at least would scream like a banshee if they simply resold all megaman on the nes SEPARATELY, at full price less.

Though sadly, id prolly still buy them. But they would get such an evil eye they would! icon_evil.gif

the games will be $49.95 and the publisher WANTED to publish it as a double pack, but the international company (Ignition) said no, it was nothing to do with Sony at all.
