Shadow of the Colossus producer speaks...

PS2 News | ...on the length, scale and replayability of pseudo-sequel to Ico.
A few more details have emerged regarding Shadow of the Colossus, the game that everybody but the actual developers behind it are calling the sequel to Ico. In the interests of diplomacy, we're going with 'pseudo-sequel' for now.

Anyway, the latest scraps of detail to appear come courtesy of the game's US localisation producer. Writing on the message boards at PlayStation.com under the pseudonym 'Viper99', he was keen to outline that, 'You have to realise that this is the same team and they liked Ico as much as we do.'

'There will be a number of things which may cross over from palettes, art style, environments, etc. We may find a few nods/homages to Ico here and there. In fact, you may walk away with a number of questions which may lead you to want to play Ico again. If you don't know squat about Ico, you will have some surprises; if you are a fan of Ico, you will have some extra surprises.' Which, if you're a fan of Ico to the same extent as PALGN, is intriguing to say the least.

'Viper99' also assures us that there'll be 'many diverse environments', with the 52 areas on the game map each measuring 600 square metres in size. There'll also be 'a number of interesting things that will be possible once you have made it deep into this game,' according to the producer. Somehow we're guessing he doesn't mean an unlockable mod which allows you to perform lewd sexual acts between the lead characters, but who knows in this day and age, eh Hillary?

'There are some things that you can find and pick up in the game that will add to the experience,' he continues, before pointing out that 'most are not available the first time through the game. Pretty much you have a sword, a bow and a horse the first time around.' There'll be good reason to finish the game again though, with Viper99 promising that, 'Once players do complete it, they'll get a few unlocks, such as a new mode or two. And besides, there's a lot of replayability as the Colossi do not always co-operate the same way.'

We're also told that the control scheme won't prove an obstacle, with the producer noting that, 'The controller config has been carefully thought out so as to be intuitive in the context of the different actions you need to do at the same time (i.e. hold on for dear life, camera lock on the colossus, power up a jump, etc.). The team feels that they have it down and trust me, it will grow on you.'

Finally, when it comes to the game's lifespan, our friend in the know reckons that, 'With a strat guide and no deaths, the game could probably be beaten in 8-9 hours. Realistically, without a strat guide and dying a few times it will take 12+ hours.' Which translates as 25 hours if you possess PALGN's level of gaming skill.

Anyway, the game is due out in the States in September, though both the European and Australian arms of Sony have said the game will be with us PAL lot at 'some point during Q1 2006'. Terrific.

I planned on playing through this gem at least 3 times anyway so I am glad the replayability is good. I like the idea of finding new things throughout the adventure on the different playthroughs as well and also the idea of wanting to revisit ICO after playing this title. Sounds interesting for sure. icon_smile.gif

I was interested in this game purely because of the legendary status of the teams previous game, ICO. But then you see the screen shots, watch the footage and hear news like this and realise that this game could very easily hold it's own. There's still some things about it I'm not sure about. What's going to happen in between fighting the Collosi? When not fighting them, how are they going to make riding your horse over such huge distances fun? I guess time will tell.

I'll still be getting it though. I've practically given up trying to get ICO, but this is one game that won't be getting away from me.

Bah-wheres your conviction man!

I had an extremely hard time trying to find a lil gem for nes a while back called 'Ufouria!'

Ill not go into how good that game is here for it deserves its own topic, BUT the point is, after 2 years of searching, it finally did come up on ebay.I did pay through the nose for it BUt it did come up.

AND-it gets better.During a search of a used games store i came upon a fully boxed with instructions copy in near mint condition*salivates*

For only $25.Ahhhh......

Have faith boys and fate will smile upon you too@! icon_smile.gif

And to think i DO remember reading the original review of ICO in Hyper.Imagine the coinage you could make if you knew in advance what games were gunna sky rocket in price.

Im currently doing said action atm for the gc.Im building a nice collection that im confident will double in price within a few years.Easily.Good luck icon_wink.gif

Hmm, you are all aware that Ico is still readily available on eBay, for about 50% more than yo'd pay for a new game? And it's worth the higher price anyway as it'll only increase in value probably.

^ shhh, i'm bidding atm and i don't want anyone here rocketing up the price more than they already are...

been sniped 3 times now... fvcking annoying...

especially when the final price is double what my last bid was... *sigh*

it's actually quite hard for me to get a final bid in, so far, they all finish at the time i'm travelling home from work... so i leave here in the lead, and get home to find i've lost...

Snipe or be sniped-Gangsta!

Though sniping is frustrating, you do have to keep in mind that, after all thats said and done-the sniper, if they won, was simply prepared to pay more than you.

If you offer, say, $100-and thats your final, absolute highest amount your willing to pay, even if you do get sniped at the end, it shouldnt bother you as well you werent prepared to go over it.

Regardless......*locks and loads*-Im off to win another auction icon_evilaugh.gif

yeah i'm really only just getting started in the scheme of eBaying things, and i'm not really sure how much i'm willing to pay yet... but it's still annoying when you were top bidder for 3 days on a price, then it doubles in the 50 Minutes it takes for me to get home...

Check 'completed auctions' to get an idea of how much ICO(or other games) have been, on avg, selling for.

This gives you a good idea of what their value is and you can set your bid accordingly.I.e, no good putting a bid of $100 if all ICO's in the past month or so have been selling of upwards of $150 etc.

Also, ive noticed, that auctions that end at 'peak' times(7-10pm) tend to go for a lil more than others.Try to bid on those that end at times when 'joe ebayer' is in bed.

Anddddd, ALWAYS check bulk lots of games that 'lil billy' is selling. If an auction says '2 PS2 games used' always check em cause, sometimes, not always, you may find a rare game hidden in there, and the seller simply doesnt know what there letting go off.

Tip 3-Try not to search for a game by simply typing it's name in the search bar and clicking find. This feature will not bring up games that have been either spelt wrong or listed 'poorly'(i won a copy of meteos for DS cheap not long ago simply cause the guy listed the game with the heading METE'O'S for DS......notice how the apostrophes changed the name, therefore it did not show up in normal searches under the name 'meteos').Its tedious but its usually better to scan the ps2 section, or what have you, every night for updated listings.

Basically, the less people who know about an auction(for reasons such as above-incorrect/poor spelling, in bulk lots) the more chance you have of winning it and at a better price.
