Fingers pointed at GTA for cop killings

PS2 News | 'Killer spent hours on Vice City', say defence lawyers.
It's a day with a 'y' in it, so it can only mean one thing, kids: yup, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto has once again been blamed for denigrating the very moral fabric that holds our fragile society together. Or something like that. The latest scandal to hit Rockstar's game follows the murder conviction of 20-year old Devin Moore in the U.S.

Moore, who shot and instantly killed three police officers after managing to grab a firearm from one of the patrolmen in 2003, will now face the death penalty. This is despite the fact that Moore's lawyers insisted that the guilty man's actions could be explained by a combination of two factors: the effects of child abuse he had endured, and the hours he had spent playing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City leading up to the shootings.

Jurors weren't convinced however (and nor were they allowed to hear the testimony linking the shootings two years ago with Rockstar's game), even though defence lawyer Jim Standrige informed the jury that upon his arrest for the crime, Moore had proclaimed that 'Life is a videogame; everybody has to die'.

And it's not only Moore who has come out of this decidedly badly either, as the families of the victims have filed a civil suit against two unnamed retail outlets who sold Moore the game and - surprise, surprise - Rockstar, who we imagine really must have some of the busiest lawyers on the planet.

A date has yet to be set for this civil case, though rest assured there'll be another GTA-related story along soon.

^ all publicity is good publicity...

just look at the weekly sales charts before and after the hot coffee mod was revealed...

or when it was announced that the OFLC were reviewing GTA3, GTASA or Manhunt...

the game in question went straight to number 1 after each news article... "bad" as the news might've been...
