The result is Ultimate Spider-Man, a game that utilises something that Treyarch are calling '3D Comic Inking Technology'. Heck, it looks like cel-shading to our peasant eyes, but maybe we're missing something. Nevertheless, it looks great and is obviously a fitting style for a Spider-Man game to have, what with the roots of the franchise lying in comic books. In this respect, it probably helps that Treyarch have managed to tempt the comic book authors Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley to the project - both artists are writing and illustrating the game's storyline.
It's also worth mentioning that the player will be able to play as two different characters. So as well as being able to control the eponymous web-slinging hero, we'll also be able to take control of Spider-Man's arch enemy, Venom. For the uninitiated, he's the purple bulbous chap wielding a car in a rather dangerous manner in one of the screenshots on the right. Treyarch have gone to great lengths to point out that each character makes use of a very different combat system, meaning defeating enemies will be a case of either using Spider-Man's acrobatics or the Venom's less subtle, Hulk-like fists.
Available this summer, Ultimate Spider-Man is due to appear on PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, the GBA and Nintendo's DS. In the meantime, go here to download the latest trailer.
