Eyetoy Play 3 Preview

PS2 Preview | PALGN presents an exclusive preview of Eyetoy: Play 3.
The Eyetoy series launched in 2001, with the original Eyetoy: Play, it started a phenomenan and in under thirty months we've been treated to no less than eleven Eyetoy supported games (we're not including games that feature partial support of the camera), Eyetoy: Play 1 and 2, Singstar and Singstar Party, Disney Move, Eyetoy: Kinetic, Eyetoy: Chat, Eyetoy: Monkey Mania, Eyetoy: Antiv Grav, U Move Super Sports, Sega Superstars,, we also think we've left a few out. A lot of the Eyetoy games have been very shallow, and we've been waiting for an Eyetoy game to innovate, the closest we got was Antivgrav, which ended far too quickly. Obviously not taking our suggestions into account, Studio London have begun work on Eyetoy: Play 3, which is due out for the Playstation 2 in November, 2005.

We're amazed at how quickly the Eyetoy games get developed, when Play 3 is released NTSC countries won't even have the second title - it is one of those rare occasions where PAL gamers get to play it first. This time Play 3 focuses on variety, including mini-games in the genre of sports, action and music. So which games will feature on the compilation?

  • Beach Volleyball: The name of the game is pretty self explanatory, but the aim is to spike your way to the top, in a multiplayer fest. Beach Volleyball will also include a speed rally mode. A single player mode will also be playable, which should be good for a lone player.

  • Bowling: This is the Eyetoy game PALGN has personally been waiting for. Any bowling mini-game is fun and we're sure that this one will provide no exception. A traditional game of bowling can be played or the game will include a unique knockout mode, once again four player tournaments will be possible for those who like to party hard...

    Dance, Dance, Dance

  • DJ: We're sick of music games on the Eyetoy compilations, this seems like another generic game where you need to time the music to "mix" your deck. Been there, done that.

  • Be the Band: Take the whole family to the stage and play one instrument each! Try your skills at guitar, drums, trombone, keyboard and...well, be the band! Poor playing will result in a poor show so keep in synch. This looks like it will unfortunately be a four player only game, it doesn't exactly sound like it would be a pity to miss out on this game though.

  • Hair Salon: Ever thought you could manage a busy day at the salon? In this hair-raising game (pun intended), you're let loose to cut, style and design some weird and wonderful bouffants. Remember, your customer must like their new-look or there could be tears, we're ripping our hair out to play this game. Okay, we'll move right along and stop with the puns.

  • Boot Camp: Thought the other Eyetoy games were a work-out? Well in Boot-Camp you have to take hold of your nerves, and your stamina as you enter into this action-packed Boot Camp. Led by the fearful Sergeant, follow orders or face discipline, soldier! It's 'Sir, yes Sir' all the way as you take on training exercises and agility courses... you'll be whipped into military shape in no time!

Party On: Get physical in this crazy collection of micro games, designed for a four player extravaganza. Hilarious activities include: bell ringing; shark swimming; balloon blowing and the weirdly wonderful, 'Kitty Loves Me'! This game has the potential to be the highlight of the compilation, especially if the games are random and also include one player support. Studio London need to make sure they do not alienate the single player.

This looks like the DJ game, it looks as fun as it sounds..

There are also four other games on the compilation that Sony have not unveiled any information about, including Music Conductor, TouchDown, Eyetoy Athletics (we don't think this will make the cut and Studio London will release the game as a standalone game a year from now) and Crime Wave. As soon as we know more information about these mini games we will report them.

The playroom will also be back again, except now their are multiple playrooms. The playrooms are back with a whole new range of crazy innovations. Apparantly Sony have managed to do some weird weird tricks with the Eyetoy camera.

The Eyetoy's[/] camera resolution has also been bumped up, so you should look a little better looking on the television. Like most compilations [i]Eyetoy: Play 3 seems like a little bit of a hit and miss affair, with some games sounding great, while others sound poor. We aren't expecting many innovations in this title, and we don't expect our readers too either. However, the Eyetoy games have always been good for some quick game play and for party games, we assume Play 3 will continue with this tradition. Rather than just see Eyetoy: Play 4 next year we'd rather an Eyetoy compilation with some of Sony's best franchises, image mini games based around Jak, Ratchet and Clank and Sly, at least it is something different.
Overall:
We're approaching this game with a bit of skepticism.
