Midway Announces Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows

PS2 News | The Gauntlet has been reborn.
Midway has today announced the rebirth of the legendary Gauntlet franchise with Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows, headed to the PS2, Xbox and PC later this year. The title is currently under careful watch from John Romero (Doom, Quake) and Josh Sawyer (Icewind Dale) and will be developed by Midway’s San Diego studio.

Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows follows the story of a band of heroes who set to destroy a powerful Emperor. After failing, they are brutally crucified only to be saved and mysteriously set free to finish what they had started– it’s now up to the heroes to undo the so-called “Seven Sorrows” that the Emperor has committed in the past, that may lead to the destruction of the world.

Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows is a fusion of fantasy fighting action with the strategy of user-friendly RPG elements, providing gamers a deep, engaging gameplay experience complete with solo play, co-op and an online community.

"Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows captures the nostalgia of the legendary franchise, and also delivers the darkest, most intense Gauntlet saga ever," said Matt Booty, senior vice president of product development, Midway."Blending an intuitive combat system, accessible RPG elements, and new junction skills, Seven Sorrows features the dynamic co-op it's known for, and, for the first time ever, it is online supporting up to four players."

Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows is scheduled for release during the second half of the year. Whilst anticipating the wait, feel free to check out the first screenshots and concept art from the game.

bah, enough with the retro revivals...

start a new franchise... it's not as if it's recognisable from the original anyway...

I think it looks cool. After getting addicted to Gauntlet Legends on the 64, you can't imagine my dismay when I rented out Gauntlet: Dark Legacy for the GCN.

That said, this has potential, though looks relatively unspectacular at this point. Hopefully they've given the animation a well-needed shot in the arm.

ah ok, i didn't know the Gauntlet franchise had been revived more recently...

still, i think they could have used a different name for those previous revivals...

Really there's only been one revival. The reason I was disappointed with Dark Legacy was that it was a straight port of the Nintendo 64 version on the GCN and PS2. Same low poly graphics, same low res textures, same choppy frame rate. It was the same bloody game with loading screens. icon_neutral.gif

y isn't Gauntlet Seven Sorrows for the gamecube and y in the world is it for Pc no Gauntlet game has ever been on the Pc what was Midway thinking. Gauntlet Dark Legacy was advertising on the gamecube the most and probably sold the most copies of dar legacy for the gamecube so Midway put Seven Sorrows on the gamecube for Christ sake. Everyone thinks the gamecube is crap but it isn't if u look at Resident Evil 4 which i bet none of u have ever seen it has better graphics than any Xbox or Ps2 game i've ever played so don't count out the gamecube u losers

Two reasons. Marketability and Online multiplayer. The Gamecube falls short in both regards.
