GTA: San Andreas becomes latest victim of piracy

PS2 News | European version of forthcoming Rockstar opus leaks onto internet.
Just days after a French language version of the Xbox's eagerly-awaited FPS Halo 2 was leaked onto the internet, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has become the next title to suffer the same fate, with the PS2 title appearing on illegal download channels yesterday.

The leaking of the game, which makes its (legal) PAL debut in just nine days time, isn't quite a disaster for developer Rockstar on the same scale as the Halo 2 leak was for Bungie, largely because the game is so close to its official release (at the time of the Halo 2 leak, there was still 26 days to go before the game launched). And with an illegally modded PlayStation 2 required to play the downloadable version, it's difficult to see a serious dent being made in the game's commercial performance.

Nevertheless, it will come as little comfort to Rockstar that the game has been sneaked out in such a fashion, and is likely to raise fresh concerns amongst publishers over such high-profile leaks in the future.

As always, more as it breaks.

I think the question we should be asking is; how does this happen? Presumably it's not leaked from within the companies. Would it be from review code then?

a friend of mine pirates a lot of music and he says he's noticed that when games are leaked prior to release, it's always (90% by his estimate) from france... i don't know where this one is from, but it makes me think that someone inside french classification (assuming there is one) is a little less than scrupulous...

I think it's done at the reproduction factory. I'm sure some QA people pocket a copy or two....
