The very lacklustre Eyetoy: Groove was released last year and was a lame cash-in title. Studio London obviously want to expand the Eyetoy and show gamers that this is only the beginning of the Eyetoy story and will be releasing Eyetoy: Play 2 in November for the Playstation 2.
Eyetoy: Play 2 promises to be “bigger” and “better” than its predecessor but it is going to take more than just new games to deliver this. There has been a year and a half since Eyetoy: Play was released and gamers are craving more as the Eyetoy camera is getting a little dusty. For those of you who forked out the $99.95 when the Eyetoy was released Eyetoy: Play 2 will be available without the camera for a smaller retail price of $69.95, making this game even better value.
So what is new in the package this time? Studio London have been trying to get the best out of the Eyetoy camera and this has brought about the inclusion of new ways to use the camera. A new mode called “Cut-out” cam will cut the player out of the picture and photo impose them on a variety of backgrounds… Okay, so honestly that sounds like it will be fun for about two minutes but there are other bonuses included as well. “Motioncam” registers the speed of movement and is going to be used in a new boxing mini-game and “Soniccam” allows the player to command instructions at the television.
However, the mode which sounds the most devious is the new “Spytoy” feature. Once this mode is activated the camera is used like a CCTV unit and is capable of recording and photographing anything that comes across the lens. This option even lets you have messages sent to you if someone goes past the camera. This mode has a lot of uses in many ways… we can imagine the mischief that could be achieved with this camera.
The final twelve games to appear in the compilation has been announced, these games include:
• Kung 2: sequel to the original karate master game
• Secret Agent: Freeze in position to avoid the guards
• Bubblepop: It's Wishi Washi with a twist
• DIY Olympix: Painting rooms, knocking down walls - home improvement, EyeToy style
• Mr Chef: Flip the burgers, salt the fries; things never stop in a busy kitchen
• MonkeyBars: Who's that giant ape? You, of course
• Home Run: Smack one out of the park, then run to the base
• Goal Attack: How many penalties can you save in goal?
• Table Tennis: Keep your eye on the ball in this classic game
• Air Guitar: "Good evening living room! This one's for Mum!"
• Drummin': Keep the beat going
• Knockout: The boxing ring returns, but now with more opponents
Eyetoy: Play 2 is sounding like it is going to be just as addictive as the first version. Hopefully there are other games included in the package which can be unlocked to extend the lifespan a bit. PALGN will have a review of Eyetoy: Play 2 in the coming months.
